A Visit To Fairway Golf - Dan Diego

Recommended Posts

During my New Year's trip to San Diego to see my son play in a big lacrosse tournament, I was able to golf a little and stumbled upon Fairway Golf.

First learned of Fairway Golf through MyGolfSpy, and have always enjoyed looking at all the wild Japanese equipment online.  I passed the store while driving home from lacrosse one night, so I had to stop in -- was glad I did!

First time to see the new Srixon's in the flesh -- they didn't have any demos, though...

2015-01-02 17.25.26.jpg

And saw all kinds of interesting Japanese brands - store manager Jun Goto told me the store caters to the large Japanese population in the area...

Found it interesting that Homna has 10 and 11 irons ;-)

And I had never heard of Akira irons, but Mr. Goto and his fitter (sorry, I lost his card!) told me they make a dandy iron!

Also hit my first Epon iron -- they could go in my bag anytime -- might have been my favorite of all the irons I tried...

In store merchandizing certainly did cater the the store's unique clientele, as did the product mix....

Mr. Goto was particularly proud of this unique driver made specifically for the Japanese market by Bridgestone, called Tour Stage...

2015-01-03 10.30.26.jpg 2015-01-03 10.30.37.jpg

The club had a Japanese market-only Graphic Design shaft - sort of between a stiff and a regular.  And a $500 price tag.

I was very careful with it ;-)

They weren't very busy, so I did get to hit a bunch of irons -- particularly liked the Epon's and Miura's.  They had all the usual suspects there, as well, but it was a treat to be able to hit clubs you simply never see except online.

Check them out at www.fairwaygolfusa.com

Nice job!  Glad you stopped in.  I will certainly put it on my list for my next visit to SD.  Japanese clubs seem to be more expensive, but they have nice clean designs which I like.

You lucky dog!   Fairways has always been a great, honest, down-to-earth asset to this site and I envy your trip to their hq.   No demos to hit of Srixons is par for the course!   No one has demos and no one is selling used sets or individual clubs!   You either must go all in, or miss out.

I really want to head down there one day. Did they have a putter selection? If so, what brands did they have?

I saw mostly Scotty's, Bettnardi's and Pings....didn't see much exotic, although they did have some bitchin' putter head covers....

I check their headcover selection online quite often. I've almost pulled the trigger on an Adidas mallet cover for my spider a few times, but the colors just weren't quite right to justify the price tag. Plus now I'm back to a blade after my fitting so Bestgrips is an option again 😄

That was one brand that I did not see there.  I've seen Edel putters at Golf Galaxy here in the Twin Cities, and the guys at Totally Driven - where hckeymeyer had his fitting - are Edel fitters and distributors.  May need to look into them a little further...

I didn't notice irons at Totally Driven, but they do have wedges and putters.  I had never noticed before, but Edel uses the same grips as Scor in their wedges.  The ones with the two little circles for thumb positions.

Some nice covers but some prices are a bit crazy.  I have last year's Club Cameron headcover in mint condition and if anyone wants to give me $250 it is sold!

To speak to the Edel golf discussion, they are fantastic wedges! Their fitting process is truly revolutionary, and REALLY put things in perspective for me. I highly recommend it to any golfer!

Also, they support Best Grips by carrying his microperfs, which are hands down the best grips you can buy IMO.

Fairway Golf is cool. I've been there a couple of times, most recently a few weeks ago. Had Miura heads. They also have several Scotty Camerons with price tags that have commas on them.

It's the kind of place you could spend hours in, just looking and hoping.  I'd love to see a Cameron with that kind of price tag, although I'm pretty sure I'd be afraid to put it into play...
