Aren't manufacturers ALWAYS more expensive than you can get the same product elsewhere? Not sure I'd buy anything directly from a manufacturer, unless it wasn't available in the shops/internet...

Haha, yup. On Nike.com the MSRP for every single shoe is over $120.

Very very true. There is no middle man, there should be no markup.

The trouble is, I think manufacturers HAVE to sell it at an increased margin because if they didn't then nobody would buy from the retailers, and our economies just don't need any more retailers going under!

Very correct, a manufacturer has to sell at full retail on their web sites for a couple reasons. One, you never want to under cut your client base, the stores that buy from you, otherwise, they have no reason to carry your product. Also, holding retail is very important for the company that makes the goods, and those stores who sell it. Perceived Value of the product is super important in the consumer's eyes, that's why fake clubs hurt the manufacturers so much, it hurts the public's perceived value. "I can get those irons for 260.00 on the internet, why would I pay 650.00 from Golf Galaxy?" That's the great problem about knock off clubs.

And yes, we do not need more retailers going under, that's the worst thing that can happen, but more will. The stronger stores, chains, and mom and pop outfits will survive, and thrive, while thoughs with bad business models and bad cash flow, inventory problems, fat over heads, will go away. It's a cycle in retail that happens more than you think.
