The Shark Turns 60...

Recommended Posts

Happy 60th to Greg Norman, aka "Lefty" since the Chainsaw Incident.

Great sentiments from the Shark:

Amazing person by all accounts - clearly some very extreme highs in his career and some chasmic (okay, I couldn't find an appropriate word) lows along the way as well.

Some highlights:

  • 331 weeks as the world's Number 1 ranked golfer in the 1980s and 1990s.
  • Finished the season on top of the World Ranking list on seven occasions, in 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1996 and 1997, and was second at the end of 1988, 1993 and 1994.
  • Over 85 international tournaments in his career, including The Open Championship twice (1986 and 1993)
  • 30 top 10 finishes in Majors, or more than 38 percent of those he has entered
  • First person in Tour history to surpass $10 million in career earnings.
  • Widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers of the ball in history, certainly with a persimmon in hand

Probably one of the biggest lows - the 1996 Masters final round collapse. Entering the final round with a six stroke lead over Nick Faldo, Norman watched hole by hole his lead slip away... ever so slowly and painfully. I've included the video below but I think the thing to watch is how he carried himself through this extremely public and extremely trying time - pure class!

Happy birthday Mr Norman - there's a lot we can still learn from how you've carried yourself throughout your career.
