Hardest Course You've Ever Played (in the U.S.)

Recommended Posts

Koolau, Oahu, HI

Played Championship tees - what an idiot I was that day

I'm glad I looked through a few pages. I've only played  few US courses, all in Hawaii. I couldn't remember the  name of this place, but definitely remember what it looked like! I played here 21 years ago on my honeymoon. Any miss was severely penalized.

Toughest course I've played in Aus is St Andrews Beach. Maybe it was due to the 40 mph winds, but it was crazy.

Ko'olau Golf Club on Oahu. Always listed as one of the hardest worldwide. They say to plan on losing a ball for every stroke of your handicap. I lived there when I was in the military and got to play it. They were right

Mystic Creek in El Dorado, Arkansas! 7492 from the tips, with a 76.2/141 rating!!! The greens are ridiculous. So many undulations causing the player to need to land in specific areas. Worst part about it...? They don't have a scorebook/layout to buy to know where to aim on approaches into the greens! But! It's only $75 to play, $50 after 3pm!!!

For me shattuck is the beast. I've played from all tees including the "white birch" tees designed for people who haven't played there before. They eliminate the blind tee shots (on almost every hole) I still have never had a good round on the scorecard but some of the best shots I've ever hit were there. I love it.

Hard for me to say.  I have played a lot of championship courses like Chambers Bay, Bay Hill, Copperhead, etc.  However, the most difficult course I have played is probably Ponte Vedra Inn and Club Ocean Course.  It was supposed to host the Ryder Cup in the late 30s, but World War II resulted in the event being canceled.  In the years since they have redesigned it a couple times.  The wind there is just incessant.  I putted off of multiple greens, and it was just a really tough test of golf.  I don't care what the slope rating says, this is probably the toughest I have played.

Red Ledges is a private mountain course in Heber Utah and it's a monster. Not especially long but the every hole is treacherous. The bunkers, and I mean every bunker, is a sideways or backwards pitch to escape. They told me to add 9 shots to my handicap and I didn't believe them. I added 12 shots. Granted it was not a good golf day for me off the tee, but still it was quite the challenge and adventure. I'll be caddying up there in a couple of weeks for the summer so hopefully I can improve on my... 93.

The two toughest for me are PGA West Stadium Course and Wolf Creek in Mesquite, NV. I shot 94 from the tips and PGA West. I only missed 4 fairways but had 39 putts and who knows how many chips...Best score I've ever carded at Wolf Creek is an 84 from the tips and I'll take that. Not a long course at all, just impossible to play.

For me, I've play a lot of tough courses, most are.   But the toughest course for me that my buds and I routinely play is in Berlin, Maryland--the Links at Lighthouse Sound.  It has several forced carries that have often gotten me.   Also, at times, the wind can make it even more difficult.

There's a course in Cambridge, Maryland-The River Marsh that is not the toughest course but undoubtedly has the toughest hole that I play often.   Its number 17, a par three that is totally a carry over water.   Some people don't know that they built a new bridge over the Choptank because by buds and I raised the water level from all the ball we put in it.

I've played both of those. I think Wolf was far tougher. At least the day I played it. Super windy and not a flat fairway to be found.

There is no spoon.

Not a flat anything out there! You're either hitting to an elevated fairway/green or the fairway is 50 yards below the tee box. Most unreal course I have ever played. But I've played there quite a bit so I think I'm a little numb to the difficulty.

Bethpage Black from the US Open plaques was a monster. Two fairways I couldn't get to. Shot 81 on the par 70 layout and thought I hit the ball nice. Played it about a month before the open. No birdies that day so I couldn't even have something to point to watching the coverage

Pine Valley was 6540 yards at 153 slope. Those were the member tees. The tips were 7101 at 155.

To put that in perspective, my club is the highest slope on its golf association with 6349 yards at 142 from the member tees. From the tips at 7245, it's 153. 700 extra yards to get the same rating.

Having mostly played Arizona courses this was an easy pick for me. Quintero Golf Club in Peoria, AZ. It was a combination of poor driving skill and tight fairways, but I hit only 1 fairway with my driver all day. I wasn't the only the only one having trouble hitting grass because on hole 14 I hit it in the desert left and found 10-12 balls on my short golf ball hunting adventure. I ended up OB 6 times that day! What a terrible, awesome, and humbling round of golf. I will get out there again this summer to get my vengeance!
