Boredom has set in going to do paint fill on all my clubs

Recommended Posts

Well being laid up I am getting bored and so I am going to do something I have been wanting to do for awhile. I am going to redo the paint fill on all my clubs since I have plenty of time I will probably do a few different colors and see how it turns out. I will be updating this post with pics as I go along so stay tuned.

Same boat here.  The season is so close I can taste it, it's the dangerous time of year when I start buying stuff so I'm going to redo a Carnahan putter I just picked up.

I have already bought way to much. I got rid of the stuff I know won't see the bag and bought and traded for other stuff. Which I am about to sell.

I did the same thing back around 1st of the year. Just the numbers on my irons. I used red and blue alternating between clubs. I use Testors model car paint. Seems to hold up pretty well.

I use Tamiya and acetone or nail polish remover for paint and cleanup. Then I bought some small needle tip bottles for application.

Got it. So you don't paint it on as much as you fill it?

Yup, I used to use a toothpick and just dab it in but I was getting lots of air bubbles so I switched to the needle tip bottles.

Here's my $5 paint-fill setup. I've found the little micro brushes work fine. They are only $2 for about 10 of them. And reusable if you want. There's probably better methods available but this works for me. The fill job in the photos have quite a few rounds on them. I advise to use plenty of paint and fill completely. I use a razor blade after it's dried to scrape off the excess. My jobs are not "pro' quality but it works. You'll figure it out if you're a first timer. It's easy. And besides, it's a kind of a fun thing to do on a day when you can't play. People will notice.

I'd like to see your job when finished. What color are you using? Will you only fill the number or everything?

Well here is some progress so far (not to hijack this thread hopefully)

Here is what I got to start:

image2.JPG

image4.JPG

image3.JPG

image6.JPG

Then I cleaned the sole's real well with some nail polish removed and started to apply paint. I tried a few different ways on a few different clubs and I've found (so far) that doing multiple thin coats and layering it seems to have the best result.

image5.JPG

image1.JPG

Here is one that I've finished. I'm still going to paint the back of the clubs too. I will update when I'm all finished.

image7.JPG

I'm excited to see what others have come up with.

My neck just got a crick in it. Ha. But nice pictures Sever. Looks kind of like what I've done. I thought the next time I do a fill job that I might look into trying some sort of "tube" acrylic paint. My thinking is that it's thick like toothpaste and would fill easily. Anyone tried this?

I've never tried it, but one benefit of the thinner model paint is that it spreads out very easily.  With thicker paint you might have issues getting into the little nooks and cranny's.

I'd agree. Although I haven't tried it either some of the spaces on these clubs are just tiny.

Nail polish.  I raid my wife's nail polish bag whenever I get the urge to do this.  I must have 200 colors to choose from.  It's surprising how durable nail polish is.

Are you on a windows pc?  If so just open them with the standard windows photo viewer.  Then use the circular arrows on the bottom to rotate the pictures.  It autosaves whichever way you leave it rotated.

I've done this as well.  If she has clear coat you even put that over the top to make it a little more durable.

I am Mac everything too and never had a problem. Photos on an iPhone can be flipped on the phone, which I do sometimes, or import into iPhoto and crop, size, adjust pic, then export for posting.

You can easily use nail polish. And they already have the brushes in them, and if you have any women or daughters around, it doesn't cost anything. I just use the brush to paint it in dab, stroke, whatever you can do to get the paint in the crevasses, for clean up, take a paper towel and fold it up dab a little polish remover on it, and then rub quickly back and forth over top of the paint fill to remove the paint from outside the fill area it really is very simple.

Here is the removal process with the CitriStrip I applied it and waited 3 hours and it all just wiped out and then used a tooth brush to get the fine stuff out.
