I've never tried it, but one benefit of the thinner model paint is that it spreads out very easily.  With thicker paint you might have issues getting into the little nooks and cranny's.

You want thinner, not thicker because the thin spreads evenly where thick paint bubbles and looks uneven.

I've been wanting to do this on my "new" Maxfli Revolution irons (1999) that I'm playing this year. This thread may have pushed me over the edge! Looking forward to seeing other's results (the ones posted so far look great).

Great choice in irons, that's my backup set.  Bought some new old stock and built them up 2 seasons ago.

I've done quite a bit of paintfill over the years.

Tamiya paints are where it's at. The clear paints are absolutely fantastic.

Some autostores carry Tal-Strip. If you can find that stuff, it's the absolute best thing out there for removing already existing paintfill.

Here are pics of a few things I've done in the past:

I did this with my FG V2s (cough in the classifieds for sale cough). Used model/hobby paint. Now I'm debating doing it to my new MP-H5. Would likely do the same green and yellow since I have a set of Lamkin wraps in Masters colors. Hate that I can't paint fill the Nikes I have due to the metal badges in the cavities.

Nail polish. I raid my wife's nail polish bag whenever I get the urge to do this. I must have 200 colors to choose from. It's surprising how durable nail polish is.

+1000 to this, my daughter has about 100 colors, and they already have a brush

I have some vapor pro combos that I would like to try some paint fill on but not sure how to do it. The idea is to switch the "volt" color to a bone white to match the black and white multi compound grips I'm gonna install, any suggestions on what type of paint to use? I've heard people even say they've used nail polish but I don't know about that. Anyway looking forward to hearing yall's input

This is fun project to do, which can be addicting, especially if you don't have self control. :)

I've rotated the colors around...

Red White Blue May-July

Green and White (Michigan State) July thru end of football season.

Sometime go with oranges color during fall

Naked (no fill, give it a try) during winter time.

It is fun to add some accent colors like neon here and there...

Endless combinations.

If you don't like it, just repeat the process again.

Have fun folks.

Yes, use polish, especially if you have access to many bottles and colors like some of us do. there are many tutorials on you tube for using polish.

Decided to try this out last night with my Vokey Spin Milled LW. I ended up trying the fingernail polish since my wife and daughter have plenty around the house. I started out by using fingernail polish remover with a rag and then applying the new color with the brush that comes with the nail polish. I ended up letting my daughter pick the color.

Yep... bored today but still wanted a golf project. Paint fill to the rescue. Today was my second time to fill the numbers on my irons. I did them previously and shortly after my irons were new around Dec. 2014. I'm not all that good at it nor do I care to be. I just want a decent clean job. Here's what I discovered. I just somewhat gobbed the paint on the numbers and let it dry. Then later I came back to scrap off the excess using a razor blade and my pocket knife. Wasn't quite as easy as the first time. Reason is my irons are pretty soft and have many nicks and dings that were also filled with paint ! So my simple quickie paint fill job turned out to be a little more effort than I anticipated due to the nicks and dings. I'll have to rethink this next time.

It may sound crazy but i've used finger nail polish to paint in the numbers or letters. Very easy to do. Apply liberally on the area you want to "paint" and then using nail polish remover, wipe over the excess with a rag immediately. The rag and polish remover will take off the "over fill" and the numbers will be filed. Makes it really easy and quick to change colors throughout the season. If you want more durability...allow to dry a while and then apply the nail polish clear coat finish to it and repeat the process. To remove the paint from the manufacturer, I used a product from AutoZone. I cannot remember the name but it is something like aircraft paint remover. They'll have it. You have to be really careful with that product as it will remove any paint it gets onto. I used q-tips to remove the paint. Hope this can help someone out there...also you'll get many funny looks when the lady at the register says to you "You're so nice buying nail polish for your wife" and then you reply "This is for me, not my wife."

Haaaaa... I hear ya chase. I did the same back in November. I'm almost to the point of doing some more. Snowed in again today. I agree with you. Paint fill is a no-brainer for the easy stuff like numbers. That's really all I've done anyway. I've used Testors model car paint, nail polish remover, some q-tips and a Kleenex or two. Perfect.

Righto men, I'm going to give this a whirl over the next few days.

The wife is heading away, so she may ask some question of my faithfulness when she comes home to find 'someone else's' nail polish in the house

Can I seek some clarification so I don't totally butcher this:

Can I use nail polish over the already existing paint on my clubs (envisage it will just be the club No on the bottom of the club - not much else to do on mine)?

Do I have to remove the old paint if I am going to use model paint?

Will nail polish remover remove the old paint, or will I need something more heavy duty?

Cheers.

I have tried the nail polish, black borrowed from my wife to fill in the lettering and numbers on my Ping Glide wedges. Nothing more annoying than numbers with paint that has worn out. Unfortunately the black nail polish did not last too long for me, I never removed what ever was left in the number, I would just fill number and let dry and then use a Brillo pad and lightly remove the excess paint and it would look perfect, unfortunately it only lasted 3-4 rounds depending on how much I was in the sand or bunkers.

I found that the brand Testors enamel paint works much better, it's the same type paint they use for model cars and planes, you can find it in any color in about the same size as nail polish at any good hobby shop or if not Amazon has it for sure as that's where I purchased it. For me it's been on my wedges now for over 4 months and looks perfect.

Good luck

Jofi... don't get all technical with it. I only do the numbers on mine. It's easy. I use Testors model car paint, some tiny little brush like things to put the paint on the numbers, a razor blade, finger nail polish remover, Kleenex, etc.

I let some fingernail polish remover set for a few minutes on the numbers and then use my pocket knife to scrap out the old paint. After that I dob on some paint and let it dry. Then later I scrape over the numbers with a razor bade and wipe clean. That's about it. I get all my supplies at Hobby Lobby for a few dollars. The paint seems to last quite well.
