Picked up a Cleveland Launcher xl halo hy-wood 18 degree today.  Looks good, feels good, and I'll see how it acts on the course tomorrow.  There may be a Callaway Maverick 3 hybrid 18 degree going for a good price after tomorrow......   😉

... Hey you are young and it is a power game today. You probably know I tried some speed training and it completely wrecked my tempo and took 2 weeks playing almost every day to get back to my old tempo. I also think I over did it trying to swing at my max, which I thought was the idea. That said I like the idea of adding a "little" speed, especially for younger players that grew up hitting the ball far first and straight second. Us seasoned veterans (translation: old) didn't have that luxury with persimmon woods and balata balls that never went straight. The same drive I hit today with a 460cc driver and low spin ball will find the left side or just in the rough where the same swing with persimmon/balata could turn 50 yds after starting relatively straight. We learned to hit it straighter and hopefully work it one way only and then try to add distance. Today you hit it far first and straight second which is a much better imo. Good luck with your new speed sticks!

So I found myself at GG looking to pick up a box of these.. but I ended up falling for the new Maxfli Tour in matte white. I used the Tour X for most of last season and loved it. I need a ball with a bit more spin so I decided to try out the Tour.

I've never really had a thing for matte finish but I got a demo sleeve of Wilson Staff "raw" a month ago and really liked the look. Not sure these will perform as well as those but they really remind me of the finish and I'm already sold on the Maxfli Tour X so hopefully these will be just as good.

That's good to hear. Have you specifically used the matte finish?

I took one to the launch monitors yesterday and after about 100+ smacks with various clubs, so far they pass the durability and feel test with flying colors.

The couple of concerns that I still have about these over the regular gloss finish are A) how easily these will collect grass and dirt stains, and B) stemming from the MGS article on matte finish balls losing consistency when moisture is introduced. Like I mentioned previously, I had some great results with the Wilson Staff Raw and these remind me more of those than other matte finish balls.

The matte finish does stain /discolor easier. That is the reality of a matte white ball. Does a strain decrease performance? Not that I can determine.

As for the "matte balls are bad in the wet" repeated statement by MGS HQ. I've tested this, and specifically on the Maxfli Tour X matte. I found this claim to be inaccurate. When I get more time I'll do a bigger test. But the tldr version of that test is that urethane balls handle wet just fine. Regardless of gloss or matte finish, and regardless of 3 piece or 4 piece construction. Titleist are amazingly consistent in the wet and didn't really show any signs of performance change.

Most urethane balls I tested have their launch angles slightly increase(1-2°) , and spin rates on all shots decrease, But in the 5-10% range.

Ionomer balls are a whole different story. regardless of matte or gloss their launch angles increase DRAMATICALLY(6-10°), and spin rates drop by 40-60%.

So yeah, maxfli matte balls do basically what every other tour ball does when wet.

Yeah persimmon and balata never went straight you had to figure which type of crooked shot you wanted to play. And yes since I have recovered decent I still practice with the persimmon some. One of my new scramble partners wonders how I hit and control my 5 yard butter cut with the big driver. I told him I practice with one of my beater persimmon drivers all the time and that if I can hit it consistently like I somewhat want with it then the 460 is a no brainer. When the tourons clear out at the end of this month I will start back playing the persimmon some with balata or wound balls in the afternoons late. And actually the persimmon is easier to control now days for me with the modern soft balls. But then again when I play balata or wound balls I get a dose of reality of how it used to be and what it could have been if not for modern balls.

Not saying folks with negative experience with speed training don’t know what they’re doing; I’m definitely  not going to argue with MGS forum sages like you or @chisag!  But,  your posts remind me of one of Bryson’s tips for anyone pursuing speed training…you have to take regular maintenance swings as well.  Not in the speed training session itself, but separate range or playing time to make sure your action is still grooved and you’re not creating bad mechanics. Honestly, I didn’t heed that advice all the time and found myself spraying it until I re-focused on tempo and sequencing for a bit.

Honestly, I didn’t heed that advice all the time and found myself spraying it until I re-focused on tempo and sequencing for a bit.

... You can say it because I think I didn't know what I was doing.  🤪  I took the instructions of swinging at my max literally but after watching the woman swing in the SuperSpeed Training video, she was not swinging at max speed at all. More like swinging with your normal swing as fast as you can while maintaining your posture and balance. I also play 5 days a week so I had to do Speed Training and go right to the course. I plan to go back in the future and try again but will approach it differently attempting to increase speed as I go and not swing at max speed right from the start.

In the case for me it was several things mostly me being hardheaded. I broke both sides of the L-2 and collapsed the disc in a work related accident. I also broke my left scapula. Now I have always considered myself an Ironman or the man of steel. I went at it hard harder in fact than the docs ordered.

I am not saying speed training is bad for a younger healthier person. It was bad for me in the time place and physical condition I was in. My broken old body was screaming no no no but my brain was saying go go go. I got so bad off I was considering quitting the game all together. I did switch to graphite shafts for a while and that got me to playing and flexing my body again. I had several false starts where I thought I was back. I figured out with help from others including Chisag (via PMs) that I could never pull it back as far as I used to. Now when one has down time you have to find something to do. TV in general unless it is Jimmy Swaggart or Golf bores me so I had time to reflect and learn. My old man was a teaching pro and the Christmas before he passed in 95 he wrote me his version of the little red book. Now I was never a student of the golf swing but studied the swings of Jon Rahm and Tony Fineau. I shortened my swing and narrowed my stance. I am a big student of isometrics and had figured out that standing straighter and a shorter smoother turn put less stress on my back. I had to learn to time it up. I also had to make a couple of equipment changes and learned to utitilize some other clubs more. I quit the speed and weight training all together. I basically started practicing every day building my core up and getting my timing on key. I have been playing pain free for close to 2 months now and am getting distance back. I never considered myself a ball striker but one of my long time buds noted the other day I was a better ball striker I have ever been. Main thing is I changed my diet some and I am out everyday. I know I feel better

With the new SM9 out now I was on the lookout for some bargain SM8's.

Found a 58° K-Grind for £109 in brushed steel. They sent me a tour chrome by mistake but last one available so knocked another £15 off 😃

That’s what it’s going to boil down to for me. Those in between days will be regular old swinging days, maybe go to the range or something. I dknt rant to lose my mechanics right now and get wrist flicky and using my arms again to generate speed. Time will tell and if I find myself getting back into those habits I’ll have to stop and go back to some planemate work.

I've got a dozen of these bad boys arriving from TaylorMade Golf today.  Free shipping so I thought I'd see how they look (and play) on the course.

Loving my new truck but took a rock ping on the interstate today. Put a star on the driver side windshield.  By the time I got home it had spread across the windshield. I am so beyond pissed!

But! ☝🏼 The golf gods have noticed this poor stroke of luck, and they have agreed that you shall be rewarded with a, dare I say it, a hole-in-one this season. 💪

Time will tell

I have not, as I’m not a fan of matte golf balls at all. I’ll play yellows from Snell or the lime green from Vice … but matte golf balls just feel like chalk in my hands.

Not sure if it was here at MGS, but I did read somewhere that if you’re a morning dew sweeper, water droplets have a pronounced affect on spin for matte golf balls.
