What's up with the ONCORE ball. How do they advertise. Are you tired of your shots with your driver running out past your playing partner? Are you tired of wedge shots stopping right where they land. Well, we have the ball for you! Wedge spin with your driver and driver spin with you wedges. That's the holy grail of golf balls, right? ;)

It's awesome that there are balls like the Snell that can be bought online for a better price than the usual suspects, and can produce very similar, or better, results.

However, at the moment, I use a combo of Pro V1s and Bridgestone B330s and have a dozen or so of them left, so I won't be buying golf balls anytime soon.

I've hit the Monsta ball.  Firm feeling ball but performed adequately.  I prefer something a bit softer for around the greens.

I won't play anything other than a Snell MTB. I've said it a million times and I will say it again - it is just a perfect ball. Couldn't ask for better. Just bought a Snell hat too 😉

I've played all these balls more than once on course, feel free to ask away.

Just bought my first box of Snell balls and they are pretty good so far.  I wanted to try the Monsta balls, but I think their website is under construction.  Was Monsta one of the companies that closed up shop after Titleist sent these smaller ball manufacturers a letter?

I was led to understand they would fight or at least not back down. They painted the picture of we're not going anywhere.

So GolfSpyMBP and his merry band of Can-aye-dians recently finished the Direct to Consumer ball testing piece, posted on the Blog - here if you missed it.

From my perspective this was a much needed piece on some of the balls that don't get a lot of air-play, but are real alternatives for those of us who want a performance ball without necessarily paying for mass branding campaigns.

Performance Recap:

attachicon.gifdriver.JPG

attachicon.gif6-iron.JPG

attachicon.gifWedge.JPG

Lets get past the fact that not every small manufacturer was involved

The Snell 'My Tour Ball' and Nicklaus Black came out on top, but I took a few things from the test, and the comments in general:

  • the independent data available on some of the smaller ball manufacturers has been lacking
  • smaller manufacturers really can compete with the big boys
  • there are a lot of people who would happily consider supporting a smaller manufacturer if performance is similar (certainly enough to crash a website or two)
  • the whole testing gig is a serious amount of work (kudos Dan)

What'd you guys make of the test? Would you consider a smaller ball manufacturer (performance being reasonably equal)? Have you already jumped in and bought some? What would you like to see in the future?

It's great that testing is being done on the "smaller guys"! They give us more options (as in choices) of what company we want to game.

I have tried a couple of these brands and really very little differentiates them from the big boys. Snell is a prime example that I would say is nearly identical to the Pro v1

Just tried the Vice line of Golf Balls.  Ordered the test packs for me to try the Vice Pro, Pro Soft, and Pro + and for my wife to try the Vice Tour and Drive.  Currently, we both play Snell Balls, my wife plays the Get Sum and I play the MTB.  Here is our take.  My wife loved the Vice Tour and thought she got more action out of the Vice Tour than the Get Sum, but not much.  She is a legitimate 10 or under handicap and is great with wedges and that is where she felt the Vice ball edged out the Get Sum.  Considering the cost, she feels like the Snell Get Sum is the better deal;however, she is going to try a few rounds with the Vice Tour and the Get Sum and decide after that.  I tried all three of the Vice balls, and the Pro + is the one I like best.  But, I do not think it is as consistent as the MTB Snell and there is no cost advantage, so I intend to stay with Snell.  I will say Vice's shipping is excellent and I do love the bright white cover.  I played a few rounds with the Vice Pro and Pro Soft of the Vice line just to use the balls up and they performed pretty well, but I just cannot change from Snell when considered head to head objectively.  One other thing, the Vice Pro Soft looks like the old style balata with no shiny finish and is very soft which affected my putting distance dramatically.  I kept coming up short on all my putts and it took an extra effort to get the distance.  I didn't get that from the Pro and Pro+ models.

Everyone knows my opinion on this. Nothing beats the Mtb for me. Lately (actually all summer long ) I've been playing Srixon Z star as I can get 2 dozen used on ebay for less than $20. For a guy who has struggled all season plus trying to dig myself out of the financial hole I'm in it has helped but as soon as I can I will be playing Snell again
