Game Golf - Two Rounds In The Books

Well, 2 rounds in the books with Game Golf.  I can see how this little thing can be useful. 

 

Not to mentioning addicting. 

 

Pros: Love being able to "relive" the round while posting, and adding in my penalty shots.  Also good to know distances - it's hard to get an idea of how far you're hitting the ball on the range, but this thing does give you some good info.

 

It also doesn't lie - you get the good, the bad and the ugly.  It doesn't show you everything, but it does a nice job with what it does do.

 

Cons: 2nd round in and I was more comfortable "tagging" shots.  First round I'd forget and have to re-tag.  It's actually easy if you forget - just go back to where you hit the shot and tag.  As long as you do it before the next shot, you're okay.  Couple of times I forgot to tag putts, but remembered after holing out.  I went to where I hit the two putts and tagged, and all was good.  Had to do that with some full shots too.

Just thought of something. Can you enter something about course conditions for the round? How about wind velocity and direction?

 

Not expecting miracles but I'm curious about those features.

That's a good question, Rev.  Not sure -- haven't come across it yet, but I haven't been looking for it, either.  Will check it out when I post my next round this weekend.  

 

It was pretty funny -- I played with two random guys this morning.  We had a hell of a good time together, but it wasn't until we were teeing off on the 4th hole that one of the guys asked me why I kept stabbing myself in the gut with my club before swinging.  Had to lift the pullover so he could see the Game Golf thingy.  

 

He had a laugh over that - and then really got a kick out me trying to AimPoint.  He thought I was trying to use "The Force."  Sometimes you meet up with some really fun folks.  These guys were a hoot!

Think you can put it in the notes section of a round, but don't think there's anything you can really input into the system. 

the bardes thing for me is knowing that I hit a lot of rescue shots that don't go the full distance or are just trying to get out of a jam. Those will throw averages off, but the cool thing is the GG shows you groupings of how far you hit most clubs.

Bogey, as I said, hit me up for just about any other weekend. Sometimes I might be able to sneak on for a twilight round at 4, but usually at MoWilly or Bluebonnet where the round is fast.

Got a round in at Pleasanton CC today. Was gonna try to play Republic GC again but they had a morning charity tourney going on. Shot 85 on the round but started missing tags on the back nine. I was walking (Dr's orders) and was just really feeling the heat/humidity after about 13. Still, I can already see how this will help in keeping stats. It may make it easier to remember course conditions when looking at distances.

 

I think I forgot to tag my best drive of the day on 17. Piped one to a 115y approach under a tree that sits in the fairway. Hit the approach over the next tree to center of the green but it's the best drive I've hit on that hole. Course plays to 6500 from the back tees but some were far back from what I've played before.

So I played my first round using the app on Saturday. It is, and does everything that everyone else here has said, so I will not rehash that. What I found a little bothersome was that it is a straight average of clubs performance. What do I mean?

 

I chip with my 7 iron. So when I tag a chip with my seven iron, it pullls my club average WAY off from where it would be normally. Also, Saturday I found myself in or under some trees a few times. Sadly this isnt a rare occasion. However, it did call for a few punch shots to put myself into a better position for approach shots. I used my 5iron for one and 3 hybrid for another. Obviously this pulls the average also.

 

Overall, I loved the app performance and ease of use. I wish it had a few more ways to tag tyoe of shots so that it could categorize the data a little more accurately.

Sad news to report -- halfway through Saturday's round I discover my little Game Golf pod was missing -- not sure where it fell off the belt, but it's long gone and hard to find.  Have the course looking for it, but I'm not optimistic.
