Ask MBP: 2015 Gear in Play

Recommended Posts

  • SPY VIP

Greetings

I see a lot of products over the year, much of it gets covered in reviews such as the Holiday Buyers Guides, Ball Guides or Speed Reviews, but I think it's important to let you guys know what stays in the bag or hasn't survived the test of time.

This is the 2015 MBP Gear in Play thread. Featured are 22 products that are bag fixtures, I continue to scrutinize or just new pending some sort of review. I've listed a brief overview of each with general comments, but I'm starting this thread to open up each one for questions and discussion.

So ask away, or maybe even leave your own impressions of a product listed here. Look forward to hearing from you guys.

ACCESSORIES

Best Grips Drivershoes and Puttershoes

best-grips-covers.jpg

I'm constantly asked at the range; course etc where I got the driver cover. It's a serious head turner.

Feels and smells like genuine leather

Takes a beating an holds up well after over a year's use

Soft internal lining

Stitch Golf Covers

stitch-golf-covers.jpg

The leather is good; although not quite as plush as I've seen

Looks are really nice in person with nice detail and great color selection

Internal lining is very thin and doesn't imply luxury

Tight fit on large driver heads

Garmin Approach S6

garmin-S6-gps-watch.jpg

Mrs. MBP swears by the easy to read plethora of data

Comfortable on wrist

Data is quite accurate when verified against my laser

GRIPS

Best Grips Microperf

best-grips-microperf-augusta.jpg

I love grabbing the water bottle, soaking the grip and handing them to someone to see their “Holy crap it's even tackier!” reaction.

Super tacky

Love the feel of leather

The stitching down the back isn't for everyone

2015 Pure Grips DTX and P2 Wraps

pure-2015-dtx-p2.jpg

I wasn't a fan of previous generation pure grips. They always felt as if they were dusty and instilled not confidence of not flying out the hands.

Much tackier than before

Comfortable with good feedback

DTX tend to twist in the textured areas a little

SHOES

Biion

biion-snake-blue-grey.jpg

I reviewed these last year and immediately fell in love. Yes, I've suffered through my detractors who I still call friend with comments like “Take off those Rubbermaid shoes”, but I continue to wear them.

Super comfortable

No smell after (serious I stuck my nose in)

Quick and convenient to throw on and go (driving is fine)

Great traction

ECCO Biom

ecco-biom.jpg

Very sturdy, stable feeling

Wide fit whether that's a good or bad thing – good for me

Awesome toe protection – can wear on range mats without wearing out

Footjoy DNA

footjoy-DNA.jpg

They hug and mold to your feet with their cool fitfoam system. I wasn't expecting this kind of support and will admit my feet ached for the first hour I wore them. By the end of that days round I was sold on their comfort.

Fit to size

Super comfy

Really good traction

Nike Lunar Control 3

nike-lunar-control-3.jpg

Just took them out of the box, more to come

Wide toe box

Went a half size up for best fit

True Linkswear Gent Wingtips

truelinkswear-gent-wingtip.jpg

Well don't I look all fancy!

Fit wide

Scuff easily

Sole peeled back on first pair in 8 rounds

BALLS

From the Direct to Consumer Ball Guide

3UP, Lightning, Monsta, Nicklaus and Snell

dierect-balls.jpg

direct-balls-monsta-lightning.jpg

These balls all compete on a tour level but there are a few shining stars.

Snell

Very controlled spin

Bombs off driver

Feels great

Nicklaus

Crazy low bombing driver spin

Solid feel

Really good wedge touch/Spin

TaylorMade Project A

taylormade-project-a.jpg

They claim it's like a Pro V 1 and they're pretty close.

Sweet soft feel

Mid-flight trajectory

Surprising spin

CLUBS

Ping G30 Driver

ping-g30.jpg

This club is all shaft dependent for me to ensure I keep the spin down. I've gone with a 73g Paderson and so far so good.

Accurate

Predictable ball flight

Freakin loud

Nike Vapor Pro

nike-vapor-pro-driver.jpg

For those who like to hit non-ballooning, line-drive bullets. I've had this driver one weekend and I look for every excuse to hit it. Talk about a perfect fit for me stock with the Diamana S+ shaft.

Mishits carry much further than what I'm used to

Really accurate

Great soft feel face

Flat trajectory

TaylorMade Rsi2 Irons

taylormade-rsi2.jpg

Love these

Straight

Mishits carry better

Feel is really nice for a GI with forge faces

Titleist 915 HD Hybrids

titleist-915-HD.jpg

Yes it's dirty, but you needed to see how often I use it. I look for a reason to hit hybrid because of this club. I will mention I'm test driving a Paderson Hybrid shaft in this one and the combination is great.

Accurate

Workable

Feels good

Ping Ketsch

ping-ketsch.jpg

352% more accurate from 5 feet? Yup

8 feet and in seems automatic

I find it tough to adjust to for lag putting

SHAFTS

Paderson Irons

paderson-irons.jpg

I've got a thread already that I need to update with a mini review, but I will say these are the straightest damn iron shafts I've ever played.

Distance is good, not phenomenal

Good feedback

Strong but smooth

Great flat trajectory

So there you they are, a bevy of goodies for us to discuss.

My Gear in Play for 2015 is:

Powerbilt AFO DFX/Cobra Bio Cell Driver.....I keep adjusting from one to the other.  Hopefully, I'll settle down soon.

Mizuno JPX800 Pro irons with PX 5.0 graphite shafts....working on changing shafts in my Cobra Bio Cell irons from dynalite 85s to PX 5.0 graphite shafts,,,will let you know how it works.

SCOR Wedges, 50, 54 & 57.....working like a charm....there will be no changes here. :)  :)

Cobra Bio Cell Fairways, currently at 14.5* & 17*....seems to fit my bag pretty good right now

Cobra Bio Cell 2-3 Hybrid at 19*....working just fine.

Mizuno 25* FliHi Hybrid...If I can adjust to the offset, this will work fine in the 155-165 range

Nike Method Drone 33" putter with 365 grm head.....It's ugly, but makes the putts.

The irons are pretty much covered with P2 Wraps by Pure.......as the others wear, they will get Pures as well.

My bag is a Univ. of Kentucky Wildcat bag that is now 4 years old....still going strong.

Headcovers rotate between various UK headcovers to club brand to Blue/White knit.

GPS is a Garmin G6

Balls are Maxfli Softfli(35 Compression), Hogan Legend, Srixon Z Star & MG 380i(similar to NXT Tour)....

With the way the SCOR wedges are working, the only thing to add would be the Hogan irons......they look sweet.

Got the NCMC on my Scor wedges

The NDMC have what I consider a firm and more abrasive feel, but really good feedback.

The DTX are about as firm without the abrasiveness and more natural tack compared to the cord of the NDMC. Because of the raised areas in the DTX it's a grip that just needs to be held to get the feel.

I do not feel the need to wear a glove with either and haven't this season even in rain.

Lots of nice stuff!  I switched from the NDMC grips to the Pure Pro, but liked the NDMC feel better.  However, Pure had just come out with the DTX so I ordered a set.  They are much better than the Pure Pro IMO.  I liked the NDMC but they wore out quickly for me, and the DTX seems like they will last forever.  They feel a little rough at first but I quickly got used to them.

Have you noticed any twisting/shifting between the raised areas?

No, not that I can feel.  I don't use a glove either unless I am playing in really humid conditions.

Also did either Kenny or MBP try the white pure DTX? And if so did it stay white or start to look dirty after a while?

Nope.  I like that Pure has a lot of colors, but being old (school), grips have to be either black or brown.  Mine are black.  I did go with black w green trim and lettering for my wife's Christmas present.

Quick tip from my fitter on white grips.  Spray on some WD40 and scrub a little.  Then rinse with soap and water.  The tack will come back and it will be bright white.

I've done this with lighter fluid for a while now. I'm guessing it does the same thing?

Got fitted this year for the new Mizuno MP15 irons with KBS shafts.  I have played True Temper S300 shafts for a long time and I must say the KBS shaft in my opinion are superior in feel and playability.  The Mizuno MP15 iron heads have a fantastic feel !  I have also picked up 3-5 yards on these new irons and the flight pattern is tighter .  Give them a try !  Handicap is 5.9

Srixon Irons

Cobra Driver

Volkey Wedges

Evenroll putter

3 hole in ones so far ( Ohio, Hawaii, Australia )

Used to use a glove until I put the Golf Pride CP2s on my Hogans. Best feel I've ever had in a grip, and very easy on my hands.

Never held one but they look kind of slippery when wet. Not good for my sweaty hands haha

The Paderson iron shafts are AMAZING. Quite frankly, I was scared to go to graphite with my swing speed and aggression, but they can take all I can give them. And the hybrid shaft? I've hit it 23 times off the tee and have hit 23 fairways....enough said.

Damn man that's nice! I may have to start saving my pennies and think about graphite to replace my X7s. Never thought I would say that lol
