dru_
Actually, I take posts like this as a good thing for Nike. Culturally, the best way to know when a product is making real strides into the mainstream of a market place is when you see the emergence of the 'Haters'. The oft-times irrational 'I'll never buy xyz because' arguments ensue. The greater the success, the louder and more bellicose the haters become. Take for example the Apple "Fanboy" syndrome. You look online for computer information. You have the people that will advocate Windows, because 'everyone uses it' and it is 'good enough'. Then someone mentions the Mac, and the discussion explodes into a mix of rational and irrational hatred and bias. Apply the same thing to phones, iOS, ANDROID!, err Windows Phone. Golf? Titleist, TaylorMade, Ping, Callaway, Nike. It almost needs it's own metric: Haters per Marketing $$$ spent. I'd argue that Nike is getting their money's worth right now, and like it or not, Vapor is a prime example, where they created buzz and animosity with nothing but a splash of color, and it certainly isn't as in your face as the Amp's were. But as always, to each their own. I will say this though: Adidas once OWNED the soccer market. Nike piddled with it, but wasn't all that serious about it. When they got serious though, Adidas took a massive hit, and Nike's identity in Soccer today is that of a heavyweight, not an also ran. They can do that in Golf, and I think they will. They really got the ball rolling with the Covert, but the Vapor is putting it into gear, and by aligning the coloring and branding to the entire company identity, they are going to reap massive rewards across an entire product range from athletic clothing, gear and golf. Keep in mind, that IMO, Nike & UnderArmour are both poised to be massive powers across many industries over then next 15 years, and it would be foolish to dismiss them at such an early juncture. nova6868
I do think they should move on from the cavity-back woods. That design, compared to what is doable with a traditional head - hasn't increased MOI, hasn't lowered spin, hasn't increased ball speed, etc. I'm not saying it's bad. But aside from looks and marketing, what's the point?
revkev
Wow, all this from that tag line - looks like someone out there has put himself into the running for next month's MoM award! Hey if it means anything I hate the way my Wilson Irons look and loved the way my Mizzi's looked. Guess which one I hit better - So, I just try not to look at them too often - I have make sure that the SCORs are facing out when I take them out of the trunk and put them on the bag drop. I've never played a Nike club simply because I have always found something that fit prior to trying Nike. I've hit their stuff though when friends have bagged it, nothing wrong with it, I just have a pecking order that I follow when I go to purchase new equipment. I start with brands that have worked for me best in the past and work through those. I did jump outside that group for my current fairway woods and hybrid so I've expanded the possible search the next time around. BIG STU
I have never been brand loyal except in the classics but that is another story. I actually need to change my profile but I still have 6 different brands of clubs in my bag. I am fixing to find out what the new Vapor irons hit like next week because golf director at my club is a Nike Staffer and he is getting his new vapors next week. I will probably hit them some but I know already they will have too much shaft for me he hits X-100s. This is the same guy that gave me the 003 putter. Theoo will be proud of me. The director wears the same size shoes as I do and he gave me a pair of Nike shoes last night and they feel good. Said he was tired of seeing me play in those "damn Chucky Taylors" I am going to try it will just have to tape my ankles over the ankle braces. I wore them some this afternoon with my ankles taped up when I hit balls and they do feel good. In retrospect I don't knock anyone's brand I just play what works for me. apprenti23
The majority of my friends are in their early 30's and just now getting serious about playing golf (more than ten rounds a year). When they walk into a shop they don't know what FootJoy's are, we grew up with Nike and Jordan and Bo. Adidas to them is soccer. All of my friends will gravitate toward Nike or Puma. They know Titleist, Callaway, TaylorMade, etc. but when it comes to footwear they love Nike! I'm glad Nike finally ditched Red and are starting to move away from Tiger.
