The OFFICIAL US Open Discussion Thread

Fox Sports are not doing themselves any favors with the broadcast thus far.

A bit all over the place imo. Why don't they show DJ's 400yd drive? #fail

Not sure if Bubba has the emotional control to make it to Saturday. Only 1 over but his body language tells another story on the green.

...and he rolls in a 15 ft birdie right after that comment.

I have never been more torn for deciding a winner for this tournament... However I believe that there will not be a new rising star to come from this weekend. Not because of the abilities of these players, but because of the course. The fairways bounce like asphalt and the greens are quick as quick can be. This leads me to believe that these guys have to be creative this week. I'll be glued to the T.V. all weekend and probably be yelling a lot more than I should at the little white ball!

Early on, this course doesn't seem to be as menacing as everyone has been making it out to be. Phil with a really strong front 9.

Been watching it this morning online...... would like to see Jason Day do good.  Hope he is over the dizzy spells he has been having and puts on a show.

Chambers Bay is not your usual US Open type of course.  I like it that the fairways are plenty wide and the players have shots to the green without having to chop it out of thick rough usually found on USGA setups.  Get to see some excellent shotmaking!

A lot of players on the course are playing some really solid golf to start off the tournament.  I think its true what a lot of the pros were saying, if you put the ball in the right spots off the tee, you can really go after the holes.

I love the week of a golf major! The experts spend hours debating and discussing and they still don't have a clue who will win. I hope Phil can complete the career grand slam this week. He is a classy guy and is a great ambassador for the game.

My wife says she feels like a single mom during the week of a major. I think there is something in the air that make a golf fan a fanatic during a major.

I found this article today......did not know that an Alternate Candidate could not play the course.....I think that is a stupid rule.

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – USGA chief Mike Davis made headlines a few weeks ago when he said that U.S. Open success would come only to those who became extremely familiar with Chambers Bay. Those showing up and only playing a couple practice rounds will not fare well.

Clint Rice was out for a casual practice round Tuesday with fellow Aussie Geoff Ogilvy, trying to gather course knowledge until his clubs were confiscated by a USGA official on the 13th hole, according to a report from the Australian AP.

Rice, No. 1188 in the Official World Golf Ranking, is an alternate after attempting to qualify last week in Ohio. Alternates are not allowed to play a practice round although they are allowed to use all tournament practice facilities.

A USGA official told the Australian AP that Rice had been given information that told him he was not allowed to play Chambers Bay.

“It's a big silly if you're not holding anybody up or interfering with their practice,” Ogilvy told the Australian AP. “I'd get it if there were no spots available for players in the field. But this wasn't the case here.

“It's a shame because we were having a good time and he seemed like a really good bloke.”

Rice did not give a comment to the Australian AP.

Ahh crazy. My buddy Andy went down to caddy for him too.

Very enjoyable so far.  I hate to say it but as much as I disliked Greg Norman as a player, more because he was the most over rated athlete ever than anything else, I'm enjoying him as a color commentator.  He certainly understands lots about the perils of playing in a major.  :)

Chambers Bay reminds me of The Open championships where the wind will determine the difficulty of the course.

Am I the only one who can't tell the fairway from the green? I swore I saw Stenson on a green but it turned out he was about 100 yds out. Maybe it's the fact that I'm watching on my phone at work instead of a HD TV...or maybe it's the fact that I had a Long Island Ice Tea at lunch instead of my usual sweet tea.

      From the news feed today.
It's sad that the first time I've heard this story was for Forest Fezler's passing but I'm glad to have read it nonetheless (I'm actually younger than the event itself 😊). Besides the fact that he had a hell of a golfer name, I think it's so awesome he had the guts to publicly throw a middle finger to the USGA in its biggest event. It's one thing to do it before missing the cut, it's another to do en route to a runner up finish on the 72nd hole.
I'm sure this was quite controversial when it happened but could you imagine how bad it would be if someone did it now??? Social media would explode.

Phil had a presser the other day and said that the USGA should use a "halfer" instead of the Stimpmeter to measure green speed. Anyone have any idea what a "halfer" is and how it works. Or, is Phil trolling every golfer in the world?

Got a little inside info from a friend working with the maintenance boys at Shinnecock; cutting the fairways at .350", and the greens at .095   Except....  two greens will be cut at .105    One of those is almost certainly the seventh, site of the debacle in the last US Open held here.  Don't know which other green is getting this treatment.

I was lucky enough to win the grand prize for the Masters round of the #SpyStaffSlam year long contest.  The prize was ANY set of Wilson irons custom built to my specs.  This probably won't be a great review, for that I apologize.  The "challenge" I had was last fall I was custom fit for a set of Mizuno JPX 900 forged irons, so I wasn't in the market for a new set of irons.  However, I needed to get my 12 year old son a new set as he's outgrown his junior set.  I was trying to figure this out for some time in terms of what to get him, senior/ladies/reg flex, a teen set, length and all of those things that had to be figured out with a pre-teen, not to mention that he's a lefty.  So I opted to use this chance to get him his irons (yes, I was very jealous - my first real set came from Kmart).  After looking at all the incredible choices Wilson offers I settled on the C300. These are beautiful irons for sure, and I elected not to get him the forged as the regular ones, as far as I researched, seemed to have some more forgiveness.  The challenge now is what to do with length, lie and flex.  I do not live close to a fitter so I had to take the static measurements, and research online.  I decided to go with the XP90 regular flex shaft as it seemed to be on the lighter side for, but also a regular flex so he can continue to grow into them.  The stock length of these irons is long (7 iron is 37.5" compared to my standard length of my JPX 900 which is 36.75"). So I had them cut .75" short, which made them just .25" shorter than my set.  He still needs to choke down on them, but they're more manageable.  To compensate for his height and the length of the clubs, I had them set at 1* flat.  For grips I got him the standard wilson grip.  These are beautiful clubs!  He was ready to go hit them right away and so we went out.  It will take some getting used to for sure, but it will come.  So while I cannot give you a full review of performance, the process was simple and they were shipped quickly and to spec. He is now set for this year and many to come and I am so looking forward to playing golf with him and my daughter for many years. Thank you My Golf Spy and Wilson for the amazing prize! It's the closest thing to winning the lottery as I'll ever get.
