What is your go to shot?

I'm a great believer in the theory that says we are all born with a swing.  We just need to take up the game and discover that swing.  A good teacher can help bring that out in us or we can discover it ourselves as we learn the game.  Along with that inborn swing comes a shot shape.  It can be a gentle fade or conversely a gentle draw.  It can be a dead straight borer, a high or low bender.  Whatever it is, it becomes our go to shot.  The shot say where on a par five that takes you three shots to get there, it's that second shot - the lay up that you know will pretty much land and roll up to where you want it to.

At my club the10th is a reachable par five but for whatever reason sometimes I just want to play it as a three shot hole.  I hit 3 wood from the tee and that leaves me probably the most important shot of the hole. It sets me up for my third which is a gap wedge of about 100 yards.  My layup shot then is the one and I hit my go to 3-5 yard draw, usually a 5 iron that puts me in the mayors office and possible birdie city if I get my wedge approach right.

My go to shot is that 3-5 yard draw that I can comfortably hit at will whenever I want.  What's your go to shot?

I don't really have a "go-to" shot. I prefer to deal with each shot on a unique basis to find the best solution.

Once you visualise the shot in hand, it becomes a lot easier to swing and shape the shot as you intend. Using "go-to" shots might be considered as a result of muscle memory but it doesn't really help if it doesn't fit the shot you need to make.

Therefore, I suggest that visualisation, set up and execution are the 3 key elements to shot making. "Habits" for want of a better word are okay when they are good, but when faced with a shot that must be played a particular way, the "go-to" shot should be the furthest away from your mind IMO.

My go to shot would be a high cut. I can hit just about whatever I want shot shape wise but if nothing else is required then a high baby fade it will be.

My go to shot is a draw. When there's water on the right I hook it into the water. When I play for the draw it goes straight. I love golf.

Off the tee it's currently a baby 2-5 yard fade that really could be a draw or fade depending on the wind. With the irons it's always going to be a slight draw or hook that starts 5-10 yards left lands right and hopefully scoots to the hole.

I really like a nice straight shot. I have found that I don't get in too much trouble when I hit the ball straight.

However, my "go to" shot is Glenmorangie.

Thank you! Thank you very much!

I find that it works well with hydrocodone to ease those aches and pains from old age that I mentioned in that other thread. I am not sure why the pill bottle says not to take with alcohol. :)

The tap in or any other putt inside of a foot.  I'm so good at those that I hardly ever miss them. :)

For real it's a draw. I appreciate Jaskanski's answer, there are a select few golfers who feel comfortable playing what their eye sees for a given shot.  Consider though that even some extremely successful players on tour will only play the ball one way unless forced to do otherwise.  Put me in any situation and I'm going to see draw as the best solution.  It's only when I can't get from point A to point B successfully with a draw of some sort that I begin to consider that other alternative even though a more artistic shot maker may opt for the left to righter for shots that I'll draw.

Let me pull a @GolfSpy STUDque and resurrect this thread.  It should have been much longer.  My go-to shot is definitely a draw.  I can hit a draw, a hook and a duck hook.  If I see a ball curve left to right, my brain explodes.  I can slice a ball if I need to, but I cannot even visualize myself hitting a small fade.

When the driver's going wild I pull the 3H and hit a tiny draw that's 230-240 every time. Honestly should hit it a lot more than I do.

I’m not so sure everyone is born with a specific swing that generates a consistent ball flight. I enjoy playing with all handicap level golfers and my experience tells me high handicappers do virtually nothing consistently. As a matter of fact the only thing they do consistently is hit the ball inconsistently.

My handicap is approaching the holy grail plateau of scratch golf. During my journey to the promise land I’ve seen my ball flight change from relatively straight, to draw, to fade without a conscious effort to do so. The changes have been more about experience, equipment and age than an innate swing type.

So to come full cycle back to your original questions (stubbling off my soap box) my go to shot is now a controlled fade. I find it easier to reach my distance and direction goals using a fade over a draw which I tend to over-cook.

Right now my “go to shot” is take 1 more club and think “smooth”. I’m hitting it very straight. It’s only when I try to max my distance that I start pulling it 40 yards left.

As of late, I tend to hit a pretty straight ball. If it "shapes" in any direction, it's often a subtle draw. The only club that I seem to hit fades with (by complete accident I assure you) is my driver.
