Forward press

Sluggo42

Recommended Posts

I'm usually a fairly neutral grip at address, but for some reason I decided to push my hands a little bit forward. It seemed to give me a crisper contact. I suppose I'm compressing the ball a bit better. Although, the driver was good too...

I dunno, take from it what you want...

I do this to try and get a lower ball flight. Even using an 8* driver I still hit it a mile high until i forward press to de-loft a bit.

I for one don't compress my irons nearly enough or I should say...often enough. I've been taking a series of lessons these past months beginning back in March. My over all ball striking has much improved. This Tuesday I'll have another session. My coach/instructor asked me what I'd like to work on. I suggested that he first provide me with feedback on my progress based on what he sees today. We've built on each session with usually one or two simple ideas for me to practice and work on. One thing he said I should do from our last meeting was to shift or move the grip end more toward my left pocket at address. I'd been pointing/holding the butt of the club more toward my zipper. I've noticed much better ball striking and sometimes better compression by starting my swing from that position. It's taking a little getting used to but it's an easy thing to do and it helps. This Tuesday evening I'm asking for advice to create more lag. I tend to still have a mid-late release of my hands. I feel that I should be releasing my hands much later than I do. I want a more hands forward position coming into the ball which should lead to better compression I believe. This Tuesdays meeting will be my 6th session this year.

I do it with all clubs. No real reason, just through experimenting saw I got better contact and I had a better face angle at impact- but only worked when trying to play a draw, it wasn't pretty when trying to hit a fade turned in to some pulls.

I always have a touch of forward shaft lean at address with my irons and wedges. It gets more pronounced on the shorter clubs and less as the ball moves forward.

To combat the jitters and drawing figure 8's with my putter on the shorties I HAVE to forward press to start my stroke or I can't pull the trigger. Hate it, but sometimes I have to do it.

This has been the biggest help to my game.  Confidence on the green is at an all time high for me!

I TRY to press for on my irons but I just need more practice with it. I often dig too early when I try to get a good press and chunk some shots, which makes me quit and go back to my high launching old swing.

Do you start your swing with a forward press bump, ?, or do you just address with the press and just swing from there.

I see the Jordan has a bit of a bump start... I wonder if there's an advantage to doing that.?

If you "bump" the forward press to start your takeaway, this will probably cause you to break your wrist earlier than nornal, resulting in a steeper backswing and descent.  Be careful as this may cause you to chilly dip your shots.

I read about Jordan doing that and he says that it is just a trigger to start his swing on putting, I've tried it and it works pretty well when you're ready to go just slide the hands forward to begin the stroke. Makes for a smoother action. No Kevin Na style should I go should I hold up.

Again this is just forward press when putting but yes I do have a "bump" just before my takeaway. It helps my rhythm. It is similar to Jordan although I do not putt crosshanded.

I have always done it. For me it helps smooth me out and create a one piece take away. Slows down my backswing keeps me from picking up the club with the right hand. I do the little forward "bump thing" when taking it back at the start of the swing

Tuesday evening I'm asking for advice to create more lag. I tend to still have a mid-late release of my hands. I feel that I should be releasing my hands much later than I do. .

You can't just create lag, the swing is a sequence. If you try to create more, you mess up the timing between club and body rotation. Leading to probably more problems than you started with.

I have a revolving WITB policy.

Yes sir!  I need to improve my swing in many areas, but this is very tough.  If I try to "slow down" and create lag, I get all out of whack.

That may be Dave. But that's what I'm thinking I need/want to do. I'll leave it up to my instructor (PGA Pro - Champions Tour) to decide how we go about it. If any. There have been a few times this year where I said I wanted to do something but he had better more effective methods. In general... I still want to continue improving my ball striking. Don't we all? Ha. I'm looking forward to our session this evening.

Going back to the start of this thread the question of forward press lead me to believe two things:

1.  Forward press has always meant to me movement in the opposite direction prior to the swing - for some it's a necessary trigger.

2.  Don't try this at home consult your pro.

So I'm asking doesn't forward press mean movement?  If I set up with the butt of my club towards my left pocket (my instructor encourages this - set up where you want to be at impact) that's a set up issue.

If I forward press I'm applying a trigger to help me start my swing (nothing wrong with this, many really good players have done it but its like taking a dietary supplement - you don't do it unless you consult your doctor because it could screw with something else.)  So it's an interesting topic to discuss with your teacher the next time you go for a lesson.  Mine nixed the 10 finger grip idea. :(

Agreed Rev I always saw the forward press as a move with the hands in the direction of the target as a way of triggering the back swing.  Phil Mickelson also has a pronounced forward press when he putts.  Having said that I have also heard totally unrelated moves like kicking the right knee in as a trigger to start the swing called a forward press.  They probably call it a forward press because it is used as a trigger, hence any trigger move that a golfer uses is a forward press.  Terminology is all it is, wether it is correct terminology I will let more knowledgeable people make that call.

It doesn't work for me, except when I am putting.  I tried it after I read Harvey Penick's little red book he refers to it as "swing the bucket" with a slight forward press. When I tried it, it just felt a little strange and I would tend to get me hands outa whack ! but sure it was more of a mental thing for me trying something new.

I'm thinking this has more to do with putting style than anything else. It seems to me that those with a sweeping stroke have a forward press whilt those with a pop stroke don't.

I played yesterday with a "hands forward" at address. In doing so, I really felt the "slap shot" concept. All in all, I was very happy. I had to open the face a bit in order to not overcook a draw. Overall, I would say it was a beneficial golf position, and I will continue to refine it..

I don't "bump" it, I just get it out there.

For putting, it wasn't good at all, for me. It made me jab at the ball rather than a shoulder sweep. But, that's just my experience.

I'm liking this thread because it's making me wonder if my hands are in the right position at address all the time.

Hand position and forward press are two things and I fully agree that it's very rare to see a true forward press in a full swing these days - you see it in putting fairly frequently but it either works or doesn't.

Set up though is another matter - the closer you can set up to the position that you want to be in when you hit the ball the easier it is to get back there.  Doesn't mean it can't be done another way - I'm just thinking in regards to what's the easiest.

One thing for sure, it's harder to fade the ball without a super conscience effort to have the face open. And that's probably a cue for those who fight a slice.

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally was able to get on the range today after another week of rain and 60 hours plus of work when it wasn't raining. :(

I thought of opening a new thread actually after the session but realize that people don't often comment on threads that deal with basic things (perhaps they should but they don't.)  Instead I'm hopping back on here to offer some thoughts if only to solidify things for myself.

I've been very frustrated with my golf game this summer - poor weather, being busy, work obligations have made it very difficult to practice and/or play with any sort of consistency.  The game has been difficult and my shot making very spotty.  A week of inactivity meant more of the same old, same old on the range.  After some warm up I hit a couple of dozen so so wedges at a target 110 yards away - there weren't any horrible shots but the ball flight was all over the place.  Next I hit the 7 iron at a pin 147 away, same result only worse dispersion and diversity in trajectory.  Driver took a couple of swings but it was okay so I went back to 7 and it was all over the place.  In fact I was ready to walk into the clubhouse schedule a lesson for next Tuesday and put the clubs away until then when I decided to take a 5 minute break and reflect.

I remembered this thread not to follow suggestions so much as to consider what basic thing I might try shifting to effect a more consistent ball flight - I knew my grip was proper as was my stance but the one thing that I thought might be off was ball position (my mistakes were thin so I moved the ball back in my stance about 2 inches).

The first shot was wonderful, high, a slight draw, it finished hole high or past about 15 feet right (there was a slight left to right breeze that held the draw up.)  The next three balls all looked the same and finished just right of the pin.  I hit the fifth one a little thin but it still flew fairly high with a slight draw and the last six (without the aiming aid) were all beautiful, high with a slight draw or straight, missed one left the others a tad bit right (again the breeze.)  I most certainly hit 9/10 solid and could have easily hit all 9 of those on the green on a course.

So I pulled my GW (weaker than Jason Day's :)) and started hitting it towards the 110 yard flag.  All 8/10 were on the green which is a 15 foot closely mown circle around the pin - the 2 misses were fine - one was around 25 feet left, the other a little short (but these were range balls.)

I'm hopeful - I'd like to get to the range tomorrow but it's supposed to be a total wash out.  Can't Sunday or Monday so I may have to wait until Tuesday to see if I finally have something that will carry over from one day to the next.
