Well, you do have a little better than a 2:1 win ratio but they're still a threat. Wasn't one of the "Beyond the Lights" QB picked up by the Cyclones?  I never did follow his progress.

Oh for sure they are a threat. With the Hawkeyes style of play everyone can be a threat. We will rarely blow anybody out. Even though it bugs me at times, we lean on the run and play sound defense. 
 

Not sure on the Beyond the Lights QB as I don’t follow it or 99% of the cyclones players.

When I was a boy, my Grandfather said I should root for two teams, U of Kentucky and anyone playing Notre Dame!

Oh sure... I suppose you want ND in the bet?   That's OK, I have no love for UW or Oregon so I suppose its tit for tat. having spent 30 years listening to Husky alumni's took all of my patience. Oregon wasn't as bad fan wise but the Phil Knight money machine is nauseating.

As for Wisconsin, I'm just hoping we get past Purdue - who are looking pretty solid . Purdue, Wisconsin, and Cincinnati is going to be their real test for this campaign.

Back when ND and Miami were good, I used to wonder out loud if there was a way both teams could lose. Couldn't think of a way that did not involve a small thermonuclear device.

Agree on Miami. I have a soft spot for the golden domers. My late uncle use to be a beat writer( tribune) /early blogger for them (Irish eyes)

I can only speak for myself personally but the reasons why I dont care for Notre Dame is because they always seem to be overrated in the rankings (ranked in the top 10 when they play a cupcake schedule).  I can remember a couple years ago when they made the playoff when they really had no business being in and got their doors blown off by Alabama.  I think that much of it has to do with money.  Just like Ohio State, theyre a big draw in terms of money and viewship.  People are either Notre Dame fans and tune in to see them win or they are not Notre Dame fans and tune in to watch them lose.

At the end of the day, they arent the only ones who get the benefit of the doubt and its really all about the brand perception of your program.

I hate it when teams like Central Florida a few years ago have great years and get shut out of the playoffs.

 

I don't think that any subjective criteria should be applied except when ordinal ranking teams of identical winning percentage.

FBS is FBS.  The five glamour conferences [ +Notre Dame ] get too much deference in my view.

Yup, that's how fandom works. The fact that so many dislike them is partly why I like them so much.

Agree to disagree there. FBS may be FBS, but there is miles of difference between the recruiting of elite P5 teams and elite G5 teams. Certainly there are scenarios where a G5 team could get into the playoffs, but acting like a G5 team should be given the same benefit of the doubt as a P5 team isn't realistic.

For example the most talented G5 team in the country (UCF) has 5 fewer 4 star recruits than the most talented P5 team (Bama) has 5 star recruits. 10 fewer than UGA.

What you say is likely true, but my opinion is that it shouldn't matter.

If you beat the twelve teams that were put in front of you,

I feel that you're more deserving of a seeding than ANY team that didn't,

regardless of strength of schedule.

Then again, I don't really follow college football because of that,

and it's the fans that DO support the game that should be heard.  That only makes sense.

While I get your point, teams would make their schedules as easy as possible if that were the case. We wouldn't get any UGA vs Clemson or Oregon vs OSU games like we've already seen this year.

That would also make it exceedingly more difficult for G5 teams to improve their recruiting imo. The good G5 teams would never get the exposure of possibly knocking off a P5 team, because P5 teams would be less likely to schedule them.

The important thing in the end is that people who enjoy college football get to watch it.   That still seems to be the case.

 

 

I watched Tom Brady for twenty years and that pretty much spoiled me for anything else. 

Boston College has not recruited as an ACC team

nearly as well as they recruited as an Eastern independent,

and thus we no longer see their regular stream of offensive linemen heading to the NFL the way we used to throughout the entire Post WWII era.   

Harvard football isn't anything near what it used to be,  so Boston has been an NFL town,[even though the team hasn't  really been n Boston since circa 1970   The Super Bowl parades are there, though.

Now, without Brady and Gronk, we don't have much to see there, either.

Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins are all pretty useless right now.

I watch a lot of foreign films on Netflix instead.

Y'know, there's this older dude who used to post here a lot about Brady and Gronk and how football was worthless nowadays without them in New England, and all the other pro sports teams up here were bunk. I don’t believe ANY rankings that will be used to establish which teams play in the playoffs should come-out before week 4, even week 5. Certain schools start the year at the top and have a distinct advantage. If THEY lose once, early, they don’t drop much, and then work their way back within a couple weeks. Another school may drop 10-15 spots and lose any chance of getting back.

Except for in Louisiana, we ethnic Catholics made quite the impression in the old South.

And Kentucky wasn't even in the Confederacy!

Man, what a sad, and very odd, pair of events in the PAC12 yesterday evening . Texting with our part time neighbor, who is a WSU fan, he informed me of the shooting.  Then, while reading about it, I see the news of the same thing happening to a Utah player... the teams played yesterday.

Awful, I saw that he (Aaron Lowe) was the first recipient of the Ty Jordan Memorial Scholarship, the Utah player who was accidentally shot last year. Aaron and Ty were also best friends... terrible

Good surprise: Arkansas and BYU

Bad surprise: Spencer Rattler, Clemson, Texas A&M's lack of QB depth.

Not just Clemson, the ACC is a bad surprise. I thought a few other teams in the ACC would be decent...

All I can say is Arkansas is for real. Watched them play both Texas and A&M. Was impressed.
