SNEAK PEAK!!

Coming Soon to the MyGolfSpy Blog

A while back Adam, Tony and myself starting brainstorming new feature and/or series ideas for the blog. Today I'm bringing you a sneak photo peak of what's coming up, hopefully without giving away too much.

So while you're ogling the pretty pictures we'll ask for your thoughts and feedback.

What do you think we're up to? Any guesses on a concept or theme? What's your instant reaction to the brands displayed?

I assume that's an Edel putter. Looking sweet. I've always wanted to give Vegas a try too.

Looks like a "small/independent manufacturer spotlight" of some kind to me.

Yessir! NEX-5n but I'm looking to upgrade to the a5100 atm, same guts as the a6000 but smaller size and trust me having a touch screen works wonders.

My only worries are lenses and battery life..  Everything else looks like it should fit my needs precisely..

I'd go for more small "boutique", so called no name brand stuff. I'm tired of most of the BIG oem's. I already play some small shop equipment and my game has not suffered one bit. In fact I've improved. Bring it.

Bombtech's driver has a 59º lie angle.  That's about 4º too upright for me--the toe would be pointing to the sky at address.   I wish I understood  why so many manufacturers do this. I can only assume that the current generation is very tall with very short arms.

I can't deny that until one gets past the mortgage and kids' tuition stage of his life and was lucky enough to have a little retirement cushion left, the cost of top shelf golf equipment is hideously expensive.  But even with previously owned ebay equipment or locally fitted and assembled component brand clubs, that doesn't keep the cost of playing from being brutal.

Forget club membership for a moment and look at green fee golf.  To my knowledge, there is all of one muni within one hundred or more miles of my home.  That's the Donald Ross built George Wright Links right in Boston.  Every other open to the public course is privately owned and has to make a profit good enough that the owner doesn't sell the valuable land to a developer for house lots.

Spending two or three grand on a set of clubs  doesn't seem so wild when you figure out how much it's going to cost you to play a couple of times a week, especially riding in a cart.

I don't know what it's like in parts of the country that do have munies, but in New England, golf is a very expensive game--public or private. And that's not good, because it was just becoming a working class game when I started playing as a twelve or thirteen year old in 1959.

To be fair it's all drivers that don't sit quite right for me, but I'm part gorilla - short legs, long body and long arms make for some difficulty getting clubs to sit flat!

I've got family in New England and I find it to be pretty expensive for just about everything!

Out here in "flyover country" we've actually got affordable golf, particularly if you can play during the week.

Full Package (cart, range, unlimited golf) for under $2000 is the norm, less if you just play weekdays or walk.

"Great Life" is a growing Mid-West group that's buying up courses and offering "Full Package" memberships for golf AND fitness facilities for $149 a month.  About half the courses have fitness facilities in their clubhouses now.  In the winter, they even have an indoor golf affiliate that uses About Golf simulators.

Membership includes ALL affiliated golf courses, so if you like to play "travel golf" you've got a LOT of choices.

I'm really hoping to see this trend continue, as it's boosted play tremendously and we've seen a lot of course upgrades over the past 3 years.

Some local muni's are struggling, but that was the case before the Great Life group developed.  Courses that aren't a part of Great Life, are upgrading to stay compete.

It's more difficult to just "walk on" and play, but we've got more options with better courses than we did a few years ago.

For those of us that play regularly, it's been great!

My local country club is still independent, and it's still a good deal for me since I live nearby, but I can still have a "Full Package" at my local CC AND a membership in Great Life for $3500.  Granted, I have an in-state "Players Pass," which is even less and suits my needs, but $3500 for unlimited golf (at over a dozen courses), cart & range + fitness centers is a real deal, no matter where you are!

Back on topic:  Now that I've gone back to my Alpha irons, Wishon fairway wood and Bettinardi putter, most of my bag is "boutique." ;)

Those Vega irons look sweet! Simple and elegant.

It's a great pity that it isn't reflected in the price.

Love it or hate it, major OEM's still bring a certain amount of affordability (and sensibility) to the table when it comes to new and used golf equipment.

Sure, niche and boutique golf equipment looks nice but they don't offer anything better in terms of performance. "oh but the feel...." I hear you cry - well, that is complete BS too. But you'd have to be completely sold on the whole JDM sales pitch to fail to realise that.

Call me cynical, call me "mainstream", or call me old-fashioned - but you couldn't part my money for anything that is remotely "niche" or "boutique" having spent the last 40 or so years looking at the humble golf club. That's my instant reaction anyway.

I was pleasantly shocked by how little golf cost when I moved out of NEw England in '89. The Midwest was a great place for me as a young adult raising a family in regards to golf. Florida is just as affordable and you can play year round. Even my club is cheaper per round than your public courses. If you want to go the muni golf now route you can play for under $30 half the year and under $45 peak season.

Call me cynical, call me "mainstream", or call me old-fashioned - but you couldn't part my money for anything that is remotely "niche" or "boutique" having spent the last 40 or so years looking at the humble golf club. That's my instant reaction anyway.

Actually, my Alpha irons and Wishon fairway wood were some of the less expensive equipment I've purchased, and I've purchased far to much for my own good.

It wasn't until I "discovered" fitting, which wasn't really offered in a big way in my area until a few years ago, that I started to realize that a custom fitting could be more affordable in the long run, that buying off the rack.

I'll still "fiddle" with my bag, that's just something I like to do, but in all honesty I'm probably better off to work with the tools I have.  Whether you're fit for a major OEM brand or a "boutique," doesn't really matter much, but you really SHOULD get fit.  At that point, it really is the "Archer, not the arrow," and you need to work on your game.
