CONTEST: WINNER- DIY Putter Refinishing

Choosing to keep a bit of a rustic character, I gently smoothed the bag chatter with a sanding drum on the Dremel. The copper is much softer than stainless steel so I was careful not to take away too much metal. I popped out the plastic cavity emblem, then Dremeled the cavity with a tapered stone grinder to get a nice texture in the metal. I finished polishing the head by hitting it with metal polish on a buffer wheel. Next came the finishing touches...

I hand-painted the brass lizard, then affixed it in the putter cavity with silicone sealer. I filled the sight-line and lettering with turquoise paint, then came the final touch, a new grip.

Using a Winn AVS Mid-size for the donor, I made a cloth pattern, then cut out a piece of ostrich-textured turquoise leather to fit. After marking and punching using a stitch-wheel and an awl, I used contact cement to glue the leather to the grip underlast, then hand-laced the seam with copper-colored waxed thread.

To keep the raw copper from darkening (oxidizing), I wipe it with a silicone cloth.

I just finished another one; it may not be to everyone's liking, however it was fun to do.  The putter is a late 1990's TearDrop TD00, a fine-milled, soft carbon, 340gm face-balanced mid-mallet.  It only needed a light smoothing of the top-line, a fun paint job and, of course, a matching, custom-cut, hand-stitched-by-me calfskin grip.

TD00-2.jpg20151009_102238.jpgTD00-1.jpg20151009_103106.jpgTD00.jpg20151009_102325.jpg20151009_103501.jpg20151009_103338.jpg

The grip was tricky with the three leather pieces needing to match-up perfectly and I got a really good match with the head paint and the grip leather.  I added the fleur-de-lis and it was good to go.  Viva la Francais!

Dude, what a great job! That Lynx decal definitely had to go. Nice choice with the painted lizard. And excellent job on the grip! Those Winn grips make good donor underlasts. I've used them for leather wraps, but cutting out your own piece of leather is even better!

McM,

I've got a couple of TPMs, however they aren't carbon, so no go with gun blue or black ox.  Waiting for inspiration on what to do with them.  I like how you drilled the face dots to get back the silver.

Thank you for sponsoring the contest.
