3 wood

Recommended Posts

I've stated elsewhere that I want to go with 4 wood in my bag. What would happen if I cut my three wood down to 43 inches and cranked up the loft?

Other than the shut face at address would I have effectively created a 4 wood?

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Most 3 woods are 42.5" to 43", a typical 4 wood is usually 42".  That said, maybe you should cut the shaft to 42".

I dumped my 15* RBZ in favor of a 17* Sonartec.  Those extra 2* made a big difference for me in consistency and ball height.  When I got the Sonartec, I put a driver shaft in it and trimmed it to 44*.  I couldn't hit it very well so I cut it down to 42.5.   I will never hit that club off the tee; the driver is just as straight.  If it's a layup, I will be using something less than 4W.

It's a 16.5* fairway wood, for me.  I've actually never measured the shaft, but I think it's the same length as my old Cleveland 15* five wood.

I need to check that...

Regardless of the actual length, the slightly higher loft has easily made it the longest fairway wood I've ever been able to launch consistently since I began playing.

There's no doubt that I'm wanting something between 16 and 17.

I have one non par 3 hole on my course where I might not hit driver (depending upon wind direction and where the tee is at).   On that hole the issue is a hazard and OB that squeeze the fairway - other than being able to reach that point I hit driver because I'm straighter with it (not necessarily more accurate - I have a larger hook on my 3 wood and if I get that sucker turned over and running the OB left creeps up quickly.)

I need to hit a lot of shots between 210-190 at Bayou, tons of them.  On many of them there is very little margin for error.  I need a club that is relatively easy to hit from that distance and trying to feather a 3 wood or hit a 5 wood a little farther is not the way to go.  Currently our greens are so firm that it is very easy to get a little more out of the 4 hybrid if I need to hit a shot 185 or even 190 - carry it 170 and it's going to run out to 185 or so even when it's well struck.

FWIW Rev,

I compared my Wishon 949 MC 16.5* fairway wood with my stock Cleveland Hibore 15* 3 wood and the shafts are the same length, which I think is 43".  I originally had the head setup on a shaft pull from a 3 wood and when I replaced the shaft, had my fitter cut the new shaft to the same length.

Our distances appear to be about the same, as I use that club for 190-210 yard shots.

I love my 4 wood, it's at 16.5 and I just put a x stiff 3 wood shaft in it, so it play longer than usually ( I am 6-3) I play it off the deck, and only tee in up 1/2 inch at most if at all.

It knocked my money club 3 wood out of the bag.

I have my Bio-Cell 5 - 7 wood set at 17.5*, which gets me 170-175 yards.
