grip tape

Recommended Posts

Are there any alternative of using a grip tape from clubmaker supply store?    I mean of finding a similar tape that can be used as a grip tape.  Something available from a hardware store.    This question is not about using air pump nor water grip tape.

You can use paper based double sided carpet tape from any home improvement store. Caution do not use the stuff that is plastic based because the solvent will degrade the plastic base and cause problems

There is double-sided tape similar to what is available at golf supply stores at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. My fitter told me though that there is a thickness difference between what is used for golf and off the rack tape at hardware stores. He's a real stickler on details which is good. But, I'm not sure if it would be all that noticeable.

Thanks.  Is this the one you are referring?

I'm gonna check it out this weekend.  There is a home depot close to my location.

PS: so just use a grip solvent on the carpet tape and it will work?

No Super it's not. I'm talking about regular ole masking type tape. Looks like the stuff you find golf shops using. I haven't looked online or anything but HD and Lowes used to carry it. It was only fractionally thicker. 1/2" wide.

Now with that extra weight gone, your club head speed is increased and you gained a few yards. Now that you are closer to the green, you can drop down one club and hit more greens. That will lead to more putts made and lower scores. Aren't you glad you got rid of that rattle? :)

In the day and age where you can get this stuff pretty quickly, I understand wanting to get it locally, why wouldn't you just buy a big roll from golfsmith and have it on hand, I bought a roll about 8 years ago, and still have enough last another 8 years

Hey Kor... I don't need any tape but if you could ship me some gloves I'd appreciate it. Maybe throw in a couple of shirts. Thanks man.

If you just don't want to purchase a roll on line, let me know I have a golfsmith store locally and I can get you a roll and send it to you.

Do they mean the same thing? hahaha.... you still have to use usps to ship the tape ?  hahaha.....    let me explain why:

buying online: price + shipping cost (Golfsmith $5.99) + 3 days waiting time

buying locally: price + tax (7.5% at where I live)  + no waiting time when you need it

Blue painters tape and blow the grips on with air. Ready to play instantly too, and no solvent saving or recycling or gummy mess. And it's about 100 times quicker. I honestly don't know why anyone wouldn't use air.

If you want/have to have something under there and don't want to use air, use masking tape and hairspray. I promise you it works. And it's safer than solvents for your hands/skin. Cheap aerosol aquanet will work just fine. And it, too, will be ready a whole lot quicker.

I've been using blue painter's tape and air for the past year since I bought the Pure grips.  Not only do grips go on easy, they will come off just as easy when they have to be replaced.  Air works for most grips, but the Winn grips are more difficult to get on due to that hard rubber collar at the bottom of the grip.

Is it wrong that I don't use any tape for my Pures?

Shouldn't be a problem.  I like tape over the end because the butt can be a little sharp for metal shafts.  I don't want to take a chance on catching the rubber underlayment and cutting it.  For graphite shafts it's possible to peel back the graphite fibers from the butt if it catches.  I've never had a problem, but I always use tape.

Thank you both. I haven't had any issues with them twisting, slipping or cutting, but when I regrip I'll throw some painters tape under them to be sure.

As mentioned earlier, tape is not really needed, but many people like to add layers under the grip to attain the right feel.  I have found that if you want to build up more layers under your lower hand, it's better the put one long layer over the sub-layers to finish rather than add layers to the top.  Sometimes the grip will catch on the tape joint when putting it on.

Pure grips work well on both steel and graphite shafts because of the type of rubber that they use.  The elasticity along with friction keeps the grip from slipping.  Most grips will do the same thing, but there are probably some with thin or harder rubber that may twist during a swing.  I've used regular masking tape and it works fine, but the blue painters tape forms a smoother surface; easy to get on and off with air.

Yeah I've seen some OEMs do this.     I regripped Tmag irons and they didn't put any grip tape.  I found somekind of glue on the shaft.  I had no idea if I could pull off the old grips because I just cut them off.    Clean the shaft and put a grip tape.

It's very difficult to blow off grips that have been installed with grip tape; not impossible, but difficult.  I've seen OEM clubs with minimal tape that come off fairly well, but I've had to cut off grips that I installed with tape.  I did manage to get the Nike Converge putter grip off that I recently tested.  I liked the feel of it and decided to try to save it.  It took some patience and some grip solvent along with the air compressor.

The nice thing about putting grips on with air and no grip tape is that when you take all of the old tape off, clean the shaft, put new buildup tape on (or not), and blow on a grip; the next time you change grips it's quick and easy.  Takes just minutes.

They go on just fine the regular way with grip tape and some kind of solvent.  But why?

When I went to Pure grips, I got the installation tool free when I purchased 13 grips; not sure where I got them.  Since they went on (and off) so easy, I will never go back to grip tape.  Too messy and difficult to get off the longer the grip tape is on.  It's also very easy to change grips using air, so I bought another type of Pure grip and tried them to see if I liked them.  I did, so I pulled off the almost new Pure grips and replaced them with the other model.  I put the "used" ones on a spare set of clubs.  I have one driver that I have put on and taken off several grips over the course of a year, and all are still usable.

I've put on Golf Pride grips with air just fine; Winn grips are somewhat difficult and take some patience.

The best way to use air?  Have a cup of soapy water handy.  Dip 1/2" of the mouth into it and let the water run out.  Starting the grip is easier and I don't care what kind of grip it is, it'll slide right on with air.  As far as removing with air, before you put the air gun in the butt of the shaft, squirt about half an ounce of solvent in the hole on the butt of the grip.  Then blow air in.  This will work the solvent under the tape as it breaks loose.  Then it'll slide right off and it'll also keep you from having to clean the old tape out of the inside of the grip most of the time.

Why?... is because I don't have air at home. I would have to take my clubs to work and do it... and I spend enough time there already...lol.

An el cheapo pancake compressor from Harbor Freight is $50 and has enough clout to do the job.
