Sitting at 12.4 or in this area for the last few months. Hope to tweak things some and get into the single digits next spring.

or feel like we are trending back there, LOL.  I think what is most frustrating is I know I can play better as I use to carry a 7.9 index.  I guess I need to stop living in the past and move on and accept my game won't be as sharp as it was until I practice and play more which with two kids in sports, will be a little sparse for now :(

I'll just say “who cares?” Do you love the game & are a fun partner? Hell of a lot more important than an arbitrary number. (Unless we're playing for money, LOLZ) It Just gives us a way to compare ourselves to other golfers, irrespective of height.

I don't play in comps but The Grint keeps an index for me. I like it because it gives me a goal, which is currently to get to single digits. Sitting at 11.9 right now, but I'm 100% confident I'm going to get there soon. Just shot 85 with a snowman and 3-putting 3/4 par 4s from within 25 feet.

... You will! I am sure people get tired of cliches' but I am very fond of "it is not about the destination, it is about the journey." Never truer than your golf index. It took me 30 years to get to a + index and I oh so enjoyed the journey. So much to learn, so much to experience and I have to admit that the days I played poorly made me want to get back on the course faster than the days I played well.

... And we all have our numbers to chase from breaking 100 with a legit score to getting into the 70's to shooting under par but the challenge is the same. Being in Chicago I have not played in 3 weeks now and other than some winter get aways, I will take my +.8 to the course this spring, rusty and out of golf shape and my index will climb, then level off after a month or so, then start dropping again. At this point in my golf journey I am trying to have those scores climb less in the spring and drop more by the fall. At least until I move to a warm year round climate, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I don't pay for a handicap index. I use "free golf tracker". I don't keep track of GIR's, putts, fairways, etc.... I just import total score, be it 9 or 18 holes. It automatically figures your handicap. I'm sure it isn't the most accurate program, but it's close enough to let me know where I stand.

Right now I'm at 9.7... up from 8.6 a few months ago. I don't really have any aspirations of becoming significantly better at this stage of my life, although I probably could if I had the time to practice and play more.

I'm fine with where I'm at. I play well enough to get around a golf course and well enough to feel comfortable playing with anyone..... a lot better or a lot worse than me...lol. It's all about enjoying the game and the people you play with. My life would be the same if I were a +handicap or a 30 handicap. ;)

I have been using GHIN for several years to track my index, mostly because I am on the journey to get lower.  However, I expect that the day will come very soon when I have gotten as good as I can get; old age is impossible to avoid.  I keep working on all aspects of my game because I see rounds where I have "flashes of brilliance".  Unfortunately, they don't last very long!

This last year I played in a couple of events where I needed a GHIN, but I seriously doubt I will next year.  However, I still need to track my index, so I will be looking for options.  My wife will still need to be in GHIN because she occasionally plays with the Ladies Club and she has to be in GHIN to be a member.

I use GHIN as well. Primarily because I want to get better and recording the scores an ongoing baseline. On the other hand I don't compare my score to others since I'm basically playing against myself - also not comparing my index against other better players takes the pressure off.

I use the FL GHIN because occasionally I had been in some Men's Day events that require a valid GHIN handicap.

It costs $18 per year so not that bad. I may drop it after this year as I don't see myself entering in any of the Tournaments anymore.

Rick ask the club/course if they provide that. Our club does at no charge. If you don't maybe the course you play at most frequently has or could get a 'deal' on GHIN membership.

You guys get a good deal on GHIN.  Probably because you are members of private clubs.  At my facility (muni), the WSGA GHIN membership is $45, then add another $15 for the Men's Club membership.  Since I'm not playing in the Men's Club and other events requiring GHIN, I'm going the free index tracking next year.

Back in CT GHIN was $35 as long as you joined the Men's Club. This was at a muni 6 years ago. I'm sure charges have increased in that time.

The $18 is the FL GHIN charges and all the Pro Shop does is act as a go between without taking a cut.

When I say there is no charge - I really meant no additional charge. I'm sure it's built into the annual golf charges. Under the old adage of no free lunch. By the way I do have to play an extra $50 to participate in men's league.

  • 3 months later...

Today is March 1... First day of 2018 to post scores in GHIN here in Washington State.  I'm starting off this year at 7.9 after a great ending of 2017.  I'm not expecting much, although I have been playing quite a bit.  The wind here has been brutal, and it will continue to be tough into April.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Interesting that the charge ($50) at our club as well. What is a little annoying though is skins is 5. But the winner gets a credit for the proshop vs. straight cash. On the other hand my wife and I spend a fair amount at the proshop (clothes and clubs). I figure they're making 50% on the skins game.

Started the year at 12.2 and have been trending upwards with my current being 12.7. My game is close though.. It seems that every round one of my 9's is around the +5/+6 mark, but I can't seem to make it through an entire round right now without having a bunch of doubles on one of the sides... Still hoping to break into the single digits one of these days...
