Well i hate to even say the words but they say the first step to fixing a problem is admitting you got one so here goes. I've got the Yips, I'm talking full fledged young Sergio Garcia, anytime Kevin Na sorta yips and it seems like they just won't leave so I've come to y'all to see if anyone here might have any advice on how to break out of this. Thanks!

It sounds stupid but find anything that takes your mind off of your swing. Like chew gum and think about that while hitting a ball. Good luck my friend.

Man... that's hard to fathom. On a full swing no less. What does that even look like? Don't tell me. I have a friend who has been yippy around the greens for ever. He uses a claw grip and it works.

I got the yips playing baseball back in college, never with golf. Took a lot of work to get them settled but I did. Basically don't think. Have a 6 pack before you play. It couldn't hurt.

think Kevin Na at the players. It sucks cuz I've gone from a true 3 handicap to shooting high 80s because I can't pull the trigger and keep screwing up. But I'll get it fixed, might take a while but I'll get it

Seriously first thing relax your hands. I do the club flip thing like Keegan Bradley does but I did it long before he was born. You have to relax period and tension transmits to the hands first and watch your grip pressure. I would suggest a range session with a favorite club and that club only. Do not go target hunting just swing and hit the ball get the groove and the feel back and absolutely no negative thoughts  Let us know how it works out

When that happens to me, I double up on the Prozac.

I know some who'll pop a Xanax on top of them, but that's a little hard core for me.

In my case if I did any or all of that the golf swing would be the furtherest thing from my mind--- I would be asleep on the cart under the tree somewhere dreaming sweet dreams

My 3 cents worth, 1)focus on breathing and start back as you exhale, 2) practice with a tour tempo type device or do your own rhythm thing to occupy your mind. Faldo used to joke about saying Er-nie-Els from start to finish, 3) humming during the swing may free things up. Start humming, start swinging and don't stop until the swing is over. This is a great way to identify where tension pops up during the swing. If the tension kicks in, the humming stops.

Respectfully,
DHUCK WHOOKER

Well I played this morning shot 85 in spite of an 8 and a 7 on the back nine and less then ideal Texas winter weather. Warmed up with my favorite club (8-iron in case anyone was curious). On every full shot focused on my breathing and swung to a tune in my head to keep my rhythm smooth and overall just told myself I would have fun in spite of how I shot and it all seems to have helped. Still have a long way to go to get back to where I was but today was really encouraging. Thanks everyone for the help so far and if you have any more tips I'd love to hear them, I'll keep posting how it's coming as I go.

If the yip is contact off of the hosel then you might want to try standing a touch further away from the ball. You could be a little close.

honestly it's not as much how I hit the ball as much as it is actually getting myself to hit the ball. I can still put at least a mediocre swing on it but I lock up at address and it takes forever to pull the trigger.

Interesting thread.Im a true believer that most if not all of us amateurs have full swing yips.Anyone ever else notice that most of us never have any major issues with putting-chipping or pitching? But when it comes to a full swing we are a basket case.My short game has always been my strong suit. Why is the full swing so darn difficult

Keep it in the short stuff

I am the complete opposite my full swing is much stronger than my short game. I really struggle with my wedges once I get inside 60 yards. Extremely frustrating for me during a round. I have probably had 10 double hits this year.

@cnosil

If you can get the full swing I'm sure the short swing will follow.Im just so full swing inconsistent. But oddly the shots 100 are my strong asset. Not sure why

I hope so, but it hasn't shown any signs of coming around.     Have you considered trying to shorten up your full swing?   I find that that approach provides better contact and no loss of distance.

Overswinging is just one of my many swing faults

golf, it's a cruel mistress ain't it? For what it's worth I was able to get over this little spell with a lot of effort and if I can do it then believe me, anyone can.

Morning drive was just talking about the yips and they said that the yips is a post shot reaction. In that they mean you had hit a poor shot and that's what you're afraid of doing again. So with them saying that the only real way to get over it is seeing a good shot come off of your club consistently.
