PING's New "G" Irons - Do you need to hit your irons farther?

Recommended Posts

PING is releasing its new G iron today -- no numbers, just "G."

They're promising more distance, but from I could tell during our visit, they're promising more distance than the G30 -- they never said anything about EXPLOSIVE distance.

They did give compelling reasons why hitting an 8 iron from 165 is better than hitting a 6 iron from 165 - and the Hyper 17-4 Technology is pretty darned cool.  They basically "invented" a new material by patenting a heat-treat process that gives an old material (17-4 SS) some pretty cool properties.

Anyway, check out the blog post here, and report back with your thoughts!

The Ping G looks like a very serviceable golf iron.

If it were available without the club numbers stamped on them, it would be worth trying.

But stamping a "4" on a 21º iron is really not that much different from flipping me the finger.

I don't care if the club could swing itself......not for me.

Nifty you impress me as someone who would like to pull a club that had the chutzpah to flip you the finger.  Go ahead, give it a try, you may like it. :)

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Despite some of the "gobblygook" in their descriptions, if they can provide equal overall distance with a higher ball flight, they're definitely worth checking out.

The specs appear to be close to the Burner 2.0 irons I currently game, so I definitely want to do a side by side comparison.

I know I don't need to hit my irons any farther

, and it seems like they'll be screwing up the wedge side of people's bags.

The variable weighting on the propriety shafts is interesting, I think I'm leaning toward heavier wedges myself.

Nifty- don't ever change, I love your commentary
