Shoulder problems affect swing?

For all of you out there who have had shoulder problems and have had corrective surgery.  I have been fighting right shoulder pain now for over 5 years, not real bad, just annoying at times. While I'm playing / Swinging it doesn't seem to bother me.  I used to have a decent swing and hit the ball pretty straight. The last few years I am fighting an "over the top" swing.  Can the shoulder problems cause this?  Anyone notice this problem with a bad shoulder? If so, I would go get my shoulder fixed in a heartbeat just to fix my swing.  I know I may just be grasping at straws here but, worth asking.

Thanks

Is it your left  or right shoulder?

There are a few variables that contribute to the "Over the top." Cheapest solution I see, is to go to a pro, describe your swing issue and then have him/ her look at your swing and see if its just not a set up issue.

It is my right shoulder that is hurting and I am a right handed player.

If the golf swing movements are similar to throwing a ball sidearm, then this could hurt the trailing shoulder. This wouldn't be an over-the-top move.

My right shoulder aches after hitting a lot of balls. As does the right elbow. Just like they used to when I played baseball.

Injuries can cause all sorts of issues that you aren't aware of.  I have broke my left wrist twice and it causes a huge chicken wing on the follow through, even though I am fully extended through impact.  It used to bug the hell out of me, until I saw the #1 player in the world does the same thing.

Your best option is to see a sports specialist if you think it is being caused by the injury.

I agree with Fireinthehole.  Have your pro look at your swing.  Since it doesn't hurt while swinging the club, it may be that you are compensating for it which is causing an over-the-top move.  IMHO, the number 1 cause of an over-the-top move is lack of flexibility.  As we get older, we lose some of our youthful flexibility in the core.  I know, I'm the poster child for old age inflexibility!!

Let us know what the pro says.  I hope it's an easy fix, and the result is not more shoulder pain.

Does it hurt during the swing, I mean backswing vs follow through?
