How much does fitting improves your game?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I started playing golf about 3 months ago. So far my best score has been a 79 and I am pushing it to get this score better. I practice around 3hours a day ( I was omw to become a pro baseball player but had an injury and ando had to do something with the energy I use to put on baseball). I currently live on a small town where there are no stores to do a fitting to my clubs. Is it worth the trip to get my clubs fit? How much would this improve my game?

I would think that you have pretty much established a decent golf swing, you shot a 79 already. Fitting could gain you a few strokes, but getting lessons from a good instructor and then get fitted might be a better sequence to improve your golf.

Dang... if you can shoot 79 after just playing 3 months... you really are talented.

Some of us won't break 80 in a lifetime! :D

Respect!

With that being said, I would suggest a fitting... you obviously got the skills, so make sure you get the equipment right.

Damn 79, I haven't broken 92 yet. If possible, maybe do a lesson or two on the weakest part of your game, then get fit. Sounds like you've got a good swing, so if you do consider some lesson(s), make sure the instructor doesn't try to break it down/change it to their ideal, more of improving yours.

On the face of it, you seem to be doing pretty well with the clubs you already have.

Here's my thought - and perhaps they do things differently in the US - however:

1. Most people play golf on a golf course

2. Most golf courses have a golf pro

3. Most golf pros know how to fit clubs

4. If they don't, they usually know where to get this done

5. If they don't know either, find another golf course and repeat steps 2 through 4.

Personally, I don't buy the age old "I don't live anywhere near a fitter/shop" etc, simply because nobody ever complains about making the trip to play golf on the aforementioned golf courses and nobody ever complains about buying golf clubs. Therefore, if you're really serious about your game and getting fitted for clubs, you personally must make a reasonable amount of effort to seek out the advice and/or the location of someone who can help you out. In other words, the level and quality of fitting you want is directly related to the amount of effort you are prepared to put into finding it. If you live in the continental United States (which I assume you do?) then there are currently more fitters and golf equipment within the USA than anywhere else on earth - making the task of finding someone that much easier.

If you're asking me is it worth the trip, then my response would be yes. Again, how much you would improve your game is directly attributable to the amount of effort put in by yourself.

79 after only playing for 3 months!? Damn.... I'm happy to shoot 79 3-4 times a season!

I would start with lessons, then see about getting fit for clubs. You are obviously a natural at golf, and would probably benefit more from lessons this early in your career, but that's just my opinion which has been known to be wrong................. quite a bit! ;)

Fitting lie angle helped with my posture and kept me from sticking the toe, which was giving me some shots right. That the biggest difference. Shift to proper flex, weight and grip size helped with flight, spin and forearm tension. Not to mention dispersion

You could do a basic fitting, length, lie and shaft flex then work with a coach to fix any holes in your game. 79 is amazing for only playing 3 months.

First off he lives in Colombia and might not have all the golf resources that we in the USA have.

No doubt Crobles you have the athleticism to play and progress in the game. Baseball is a good transition sport for golfers. In fact many baseball players become very good golfers. Now for your questions...

79 is a good score. And for you at this stage in your game I'd say very good. We can all light it up now and then. Ya know? As far as fitting goes I'd say yes. Get fit. Get some coaching/lessons. Here's my take on fitting. You might as well get fit sooner rather than later. When you played baseball you didn't play with a cheap bat that was dented and too short did you? Of course not. Same with golf I feel. Get yourself a decent set of clubs that fit you physically. Then with proper equipment work on swinging the club properly. With the properly fitted clubs you've eliminated a large part of the game which is ill fitting equipment. There's just no point in my opinion in improving your swing to a set of clubs that don't fit you. You'll be making compensations because of it.

Your post was titled, "How much does fitting improves your game?"

It improves your game. Period.

Will it cause you to start shooting 73,75? No. That takes work and experience. What it will do is give you the proper tools to eventually start shooting lower scores. For me I gained a small amount of distance and;... this was huge; my shot disbursement became much tighter. I also struck the ball more centered in the face. That's important.

Over the past year and some months I've been taking some lessons/coaching. That's been huge also. My game has made a big improvement and me and everyone else I play with notices it.

Recap: Play with properly fitted equipment and find yourself a teacher you can work with. Don't expect miracles from either. It takes time my friend.

Good luck with this maddening game.

Where in Cali do you play? I might know someone. But jaskanki is right, if you have access to a golf course, they should have a pro that can give you some pointers regarding club fitting.

Other than what everyone else has mentioned, I feel (for myself) it gives me peace of mind knowing the clubs are set for my abilities and then the rest is up to me. Getting fit could be a game changer in many ways and it is fun to do.

  • 2 weeks later...

I went from poorly fit GI irons to completely custom fit players irons (CB versions because I still wasn't sure I would be able to consistently strike blades in crunch time during tournaments) and I am hitting better more consistent shots as well as scoring better. I went from shooting low to mid 80's to mid-high 70's and now that I'm getting my swing back after a terrible knee injury I'm getting into the consistent mid 70's with occasional low/high.

With my driver, I went from a spin machine regular flex off the rack at 9.5* to a tipped stiff 8* that never misses the fairway and gets an extra 30 yards because my spin is under control.

My putter is bent 2* upright and it's been my most consistent putter ever.

Bottom line, if you're getting new clubs, get custom fit. Especially if you plan to play competitively or take golf seriously and not just play one round every couple weeks or months. It may not help in itself like mine did but as others have said, your confidence will be through the roof knowing that your clubs are made specifically for your one unique swing.

Tom Wishon offers a custom fit questionnaire for people who don't have ready access to a fitter. Here's the link:

http://wishongolf.com/clubmakers/twgt-your-fit-custom-fit-questionnaire/

As he's pretty much the guru of custom fitting, it would be worth your time to contact him IMO. He is usually extremely helpful, even a busy as he is. You might follow up with an e-mail or phone call (not sure of the cost from Colombia! but would probably be worth it).

Getting fit for clubs regardless of your skill level is only going to help you. In my personal opinion a fitting can make the difference between night and day. Nice shooting in three months. Took me two years of lessons before I broke 80 for the first time. Ill keep my eyes peeled for you on the tour in 6 months

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm getting fitted this summer when I travel to US. I'm son excited playing golf. Last weekend I played my first tournament and got first place. Adding my handicap, I shot 72 (86 gross) first day, 71 (85 gross) and the last day was the day I played with the leaders of the tournament and all the pressure made myself focus so much. I felt like inside a bubble. I shot my best score so far a 61 (74 gross) and can't wait to keep getting better. I will post to this group once I get myself fitted to see how much it works.

Here in Colombia you have to pay a fee tof get a handicap with the golfers association. Since I did that just two months ago the scores they had to measure where 90's. I believe my handicap will drop drastically after this month (since they update it every month)
