Recommend a golf GPS

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I've been trawling the internet trying to do as much research as possible into what golf GPS device to go for.

Currently I'm using a smartphone app but I'm starting to play society days and that now and I could do with a dedicated device. I'm not looking at lasers and not a large handheld device, a small handheld or watch will suffice.

I sometimes do 36 holes so need it to be able to cope with that, I'm not worried about a score card function, I don't want to pay recurring fees. My budget is around 150 pounds.

Three I had in mind were

Bushnell Neo xs

Bushnell Neo Ghost

Garmin S2

They seem to have sold huge amounts of these and do pretty well, any thoughts on these or any other recommendations. Just seen the tom tom golfer which could be a possibility.

Thanks for your help.

i can't speak for the others, but the advantage of Garmin is you get all the courses/updates free, don't have to pay per course or a subscription...I have an approach G5 and I'm still getting all the updates/courses free.....just my 2c

If I were to buy another GPS I think I'd look at the IZZO SWAMI 4000. Here's why.... It's inexpensive, and it provides front, middle, back. It small, lightweight, fast, and simple.

My first GPS device was a handheld GolfLogix model. Mine quit after about 5 years. It was also a front, middle, and back yardage unit. Loved it. I purchased a Skycaddie handheld and it's just ok. It will do a whole lot of other useless stuff but I only use it for front, middle, back numbers. And... the Skycaddie is more expensive and slow. I wouldn't buy another of their products. Additionally, I don't like wearing a watch when I play so a wrist GPS device doesn't appeal to me either.

I have had a SkyCaddie for maybe 12 years or more. I have about the least sophisticated model ever made, an SGX 2.5. I'm surprised they even support it anymore! It is simply the best thing I have ever purchased for golf. I travel a lot for work, and I play a lot of courses that I have never seen before. The best thing about the sky caddie, in my opinion, is that it tells you about hazards that you cannot see. The yardages have been walked, and are all verified. I have found them to be extremely accurate in my use of the device. Could not recommend a SkyCaddie more highly.

I use the golf pad app for my iphone, it was $20 for the lifetime membership which gives you, shot tracking - recommends clubs based on previously recorded distances and you can look at accuracy off the tee or approach shots. Gives you satellite images of holes,

But if you want straight GPS with just numbers can't go wrong with the izzo, the garmins give an artist rendition of holes as well. All good suggestions

I have owned 3 models of SkyCaddies, and swore by them, but their time has passed. They require annual fees and you were limited to 10 (then later, 20) courses on your device at a time. I had the S2, S4 and an S5 I haven't touched in over a year, despite the subscription being paid up. Why?

Because everyone now has some kind of GPS device with at least 30,000 courses on it for free, and they're just as accurate. Now, i only really need distances to front, back and middle, and all the GPS units out there give you that. The majority, including my S5, have more bells and whistles that I don't need or want, like a helicopter fly over at every tee. Also, the handheld units need a place to stay. I wore it on my belt, and it fell off and I ran over it with the cart (it survived)!

So I finally joined the club and got a Garmin S1 GPS watch. Pre-loaded with 30,000 courses, just turn it on. No more downloading the courses I think I might play. It automatically knows which course and which hole I'm standing on.

So cool to just glance at my wrist for the correct yardage!

I just got a Garmin Approach S4. I wanted distances to obstacles and hazards, but it also does much more. Read some bad reviews on SkyCaddie watches. I'm a Garmin man now!

The Bushnell Neo's are great.

You can get a Garmin G6 at a good deal right now for about $150.....It shows layout, provides layup distances, shot distance, scores, plus more...

I get 3 rounds out of it between charges.

I have a Golfbuddy VS4 Voice and retails for around $149. You can clip it to your belt, you could also purchase a wrist band and wear it as a watch, I keep mines in my pant pocket. Tells the yardage for the front, middle, and back pin placement. Press the corner button and it speaks the yardage to you. You could also find out how far you hit a shot. After having it for over a year, the battery lasts for 18 holes, they advertise 9-10 hours, but I highly doubt that.

Curious about this too because I was using a bushnell neo+ but dropped it on the course. Like the OP I'm looking for just middle of the green yardage and not bulky so I can take it out of my pocket during tournament or casual rounds.

Use app skydroid and or skycaddie if I'm keeping stats.

Money no object, I'd still use these. Simple and easy and do just as well as the dedicated GPS units.

As mentioned in the other thread I use golf shot for yardages, stat keeping, score keeping and just about everything else I need.

Don't think I'd switch anything up if money wasn't an object as this has treated me extremely well throughout the year.

I use my SkyCaddie for F,M,B yardage. Use my MG M400 LRF mostly for objects like trees, bunkers, hazards, etc. Pins too. Pro Tip: the MG M400 is a great buy. Several of us around here use it. It's also on sale periodically for $129.

If money were no object I'd have my own dedicated satellite system with built in Shot Link and Aim Point technology.

i currently use the Garmin X40   I like it alot, I'll be happy to answer any questions.    However,  I will be reviewing the new Precision Pro for the site very soon, so Im sure I'll have a lot of comparisons at that time.

BTW I was chosen to review under my previous screen name  Jr 82, but it's an old nickname that not many current friends know, so I went back to a more familiar name, Just mentioning that in case there was any confusion.

Hula, how has your experience with the Neo Ghost been? I have been using golf shot app but find unlocking the phone annoying. I really like the chunky, big-number display on the ghost.

The Bushnell Neo Ghost has been pretty solid to date. I tend to use more than my Tour-X laser on curses that I know.  If I need a carry yardage (which the Ghost also does) or if I am playing a course for the first time, its the Tour-X.

Just bought the Bushnell Neo Ghost from BudgetGolf for a good deal. I play a lot in Canada so the phone doesn't really work for me up there. I also like that the Ghost shows distances to hazards and landmarks
