OFFICIAL FORUM MEMBER REVIEW - CALLAWAY XR 16 DRIVERS AND FWS

Recommended Posts

Call it 2.5 since my stage 2 was a bit on the shorter side.

After the last update, the driver has turned into a weapon for me eliminating the right side of the course for me. It's great for doglegs, or any hole with trouble right as I've only hit 3-4 fades or pushes with the club. The downside is of course if a hole is left to right. Along that line of thought, even on dead center contact, the driver comes up a bit short despite a draw compared to my Fly-Z. I think it's partially due to the lower ball flight, which does come in handy when it's windy. The big problem is that hook swings become exacerbated by the draw offset. With the Fly-Z they may be in the rough, with this I've hit a few houses. The Fly-Z is also a bit better feeling, this club just feels a bit more heavy through contact even though I like the sound better.

Let's talk about the fairway wood. If I could I'd give it two scores for off the deck vs off the tee. The reason is one the jury is still out. I don't hit a lot of 3 woods off the deck. There's almost no need on most holes I play even the par 5's. If I do have to hit it, it's more or less because my drive stunk or the hole plays directly into the wind. That all being said, I've hit 3-4 great shots with it, but 30 or more worm burners. I can tell it's because of me and not being able to find a swing that works. I'm still trying to figure out that magical formula. when I do hit this well, the club goes 225, which is the longest I've ever been with any wood off the deck.

Off the tee though it's a wonderful little club for me. Doglegs that are too far for an iron but too short for a driver are perfect for this thing. On one particular hole, I've used it every time. After a brief adjustment period with it, I've started to stripe this thing with almost a dead straight shot, or a slight little draw. The big thing is it filled a gaping hole in my bag and I'm starting to trust it more in those situations. That's been a big difference the last week or so with the club.

That's what makes this site great. I've been testing the Xr-16 and can tell you I'm not a huge fan, but I can see how it works for golfers who play a slice or want a draw.

i feel for you because I've just not had the issues with it that you've had. I don't think I've overdrawn or sliced one yet other than just a block.

I've started to get a little fade with it from time to time. Still not enough where I can play it with a fade consistently. The wood off the deck has been meh, but I hit it dead straight off the tee.

Just a quick update: off the tee the three wood is spectacular. I'm hitting dead straight and more importantly I'm hitting it into the doglegs where a drive is too far and a 4 iron isn't far enough.

The driver is still shorter, a bit lower and tends to be a little more straight or draw biased than the Fly-Z. The Fly-Z is also a bit lighter and feels lighter when smashing the ball.

I put mine back in the bag for a round on Saturday.  Didn't hit it well at all.   As has been the case the past couple rounds with it, my "old" Optiforce 3W seems to go just about as far, may hit both out next round and use the Precision Pro GPS GolfBand to measure each one  :P

I think the XR16 knows it's days are limited with me going to Pinehurst later this month and getting the 917 in hand to try out!!

Interesting. The XR 16 fairway wood is been a solid addition to my bag. (To be fair didn't have any woods before the test.) The driver is finding itself on the outside looking in. My Fly-Z has a much softer feel, goes at least 5-10 yards further and is just a tad more comfortable for me.

The fairway wood is great off the tee but I've started hitting some bombs with it. After miss hitting one, I dropped one at the same spot, had to be 230 out and put it to three feet. If only the first one actually was a good swing.

I'm wondering if the stiffer shaft has anything to do with it, or whether these clubs aren't quite as hot as others off the face.

I should clarify, just to be sure. It was the XR16 driver I put back in play. And the Optiforce 3w was hitting it further.

Could be that my miss on a driver tends to be a low heel shot. Do it's possible even likely with the shorter shaft 3w I'm making contact closer to the sweet spot.

I do have the XR16 3w as well. But it has not even come close to being in the regular rotation. I don't get quite the launch with it that I do with the Optiforce.

Nice cleanup in Stage 3 Easy32........it's prob just a question of timing for your 3 wood.....with a tad more lag, your 3 wood will probably hit square and beat the Ping 25.

I like the Callaway but the Ping also suits my eye a little better. But because the 3wood is also a little stronger it doesn't create enough distance separation from my driver. I actually just get out in front of the Callaway a little more so I hit it right. As weird as it sounds I like the ping going a little shorter. I'm anywhere from 250-260 with the ping and the Callaway is a little further. Off the tee it's not worth hitting the 3 wood for accuracy purpose.

I'm jealous of the success some of you had with the fairway woods. I wanted to fall in love but it wasn't meant to be. In fact, it was horrible. Like I said, not mad, just jealous of y'alls success.

This driver (XR 16 Pro) is one of the best that I have hit...by far! It's a great feeling driver with a nice sound and without the loud ping.

The ONLY down fall it takes time to find a good head/shaft combo. I have finally found a combo that I can play. It's a fairway finder and deep as hell!

Played this weekend and I was hitting some long balls and fairway on a tight course. During play I think that I was able to sell two of them. I have owned the M1 and it was nice but too much "tinkering" lead me to hooks and pushes. Keep it simple is the way I like to live!

Just picked up the XR 16 pro 3 wood with a Graphite Design BB and it's a rocket! More to come on that later

Interesting. I had the same issue. I switched out the shaft I got with it to the Kuro Kage. I think I can swing it much better now.

I just picked up the G30 to compare to the xr16. My bag is mostly ping anyways and I tend to hit pings well. I know for a fact, me struggling with the driver is my swing and not making great swings But Im hoping to narrow in my misses. I've hit it once at the range and hit it great for the first 15-25 balls and the swing got a little loose from pounding balls. So not sure where I stand yet

I'm still gaming hte XR16 fairwood wood. However the driver is currently sitting in my bag, probably never coming out more than once or twice a round. I'm hitting the Fly-Z so much more consistent that it really isn't close.

I think it's like most things, everything fits everyone differently. It's also a mindset and mental lol. I said in my very first statements that the 3wood was going to have to be flawless to replace my ping 3 wood. I could happily play the callaway 3 wood. I just prefer my ping. As for the driver, I can hit it well and then I miss it, it's an Indian issue, not an arrow issue.

Believe me, I was and still am hoping that the Callaway becomes a can't miss club for me and a weapon for me. But I recently purchased the g30 to compare it to and see if it can improve me. I'm a driver away from being back to pretty darn good at this silly game.

I know I'm a little behind, but I just picked up one of  these, XR 10.5* driver, I am itching to get out. I'm a bit of a hacker and it sounds like this should be a little more forgiving than the 20 year old inherited Wilson 1 wood I've been using.
