Official Form Member Review: Ben Hogan Ft. Worth hi Long Irons

Recommended Posts

Without giving too much away before the review, these clubs are really easy to hit. For someone who doesn't know what they are they look intimidating. I've asked a lot of people to try them and almost every time I hear some version of "I can't hit blades".

These things are so classically beautiful and it is great to hear that they seem to be fairly easy to hit.

I hit my irons really well and have decided that maybe I should just drop my hybrids and switch to a forgiving long iron. I have so much more confidence over an iron.

Can any of you comment on how these might play relative to something like a PING rapture/crossover (which apparently is not a hybrid)

For me these look more appealing. The Ping crossover has too much offset to my eye and gave me the tendency for the lefts. No saying the Crossovers are hook machines but they did not fit my eye nor did the shaft that was in it. The Hogans also sound like and iron when struck and not as high pitched as the Crossover. These would be though for me to compare to the Rapture DI since they are really two different clubs. The Hogans are a lot easier off the deck and fly a bit higher off the tee. Some of that is loft (4* lower in the Rapture) and some is intent for the club.

Chemclub,

I have a lesson coming up on the 16th of this month and I will hit the Crossover while I am there and include a comparison in my review, or at the very least post the comparison thoughts that I have in the thread after my lesson.

If anyone else has any testing requests/questions that they want answered, please let me know! I am happy to do what I can to answer them for you guys!

The only thing that I will add at this point is the Hogans are not driving irons nor are they meant to be.  These are designed as easier to hit long irons which is a bit different that some of the clubs that I will compare them to.  I played the Dhy and the X utility protos in both 21* and 24* for an extended time and the Hogans are just a bit different.  More to come on that point.

I agree they are very easy to hit off the ground, but I will say I am loving my 20* Ft Worth HI off of the tee. I tend to hit the ball lower than most so maybe that is why.

Just to give you my initial impressions from using them on the course and the range, they are great long irons. The biggest issue I have right now is that I'm hitting my Apex CF16 long irons great right now and I'm having a hard time differentiating them from the performance of the Hogan's. The Hogan's win hands down on looks and feel, but they may have a difficult time breaking up my already established Apex set. I'll know a lot more by the time I'm ready for the full review and have some numbers I recorded on my ES14 launch monitor to compare between my irons and the Hogan's. These irons are definitely intriguing though.

Kind of curious if there is anyone in the forums who had been looking at these clubs and how your impressions compare with the reviews.

In comparing my review to the others, I'm the only one who had distance issues using these off of a tee.  I'm trying to figure out why.  I have a match play tournament this weekend and I am thinking about putting the 26 and maybe even the 30 back into play just for the extra forgiveness and what a good strong long iron shot can do to put pressure on an opponent (also not too concerned about keeping the ball low.  The weather looks hot and humid but little wind).

Some comparison pics with the other utility irons I own.

Hogan and Dhy Pro

Hogan, Tour Edge Exotics Cb Pro H, Callaway X Utility Proto

Hogan and Apex UT

The Apex UT is the closest in looks and feel to the Hogan and a solid long iron replacement. Only have one round in so far with the Apex and the Hogan is still tops for me.

Not really.  It helps to tee it as low as possible (lower than I hat been used to with the FW-15's).  I still think I lose a lot when the ball strikes high on the face but its a little more manageable now.

I am guessing that its a function of how high I hit it anyway that a strike high on the face spends its reduced energy going up instead of away from me.

For me, they seemed equal to but not better than my current long irons, with the exception of feel where they beat out my long irons by a fair margin. I also would of needed to get them re-shafted with the same shafts as the rest of my irons, so I just stuck with what I have. The Hogan's are great, but I hit what I have very well already. No reason for me to switch.

I was and will be once the new season starts.  I am travelling a bit over the next few months and take my backup bag when I go, which also happens to be what I am using right now.  Based off of this review I actually added a Callaway Apex UT to the travel bag.

The 20* I had purchased is in the bag ans will stay in the bag.  The 22* would be in if I didn't have the 20*  The 26* rotates in and out depending on conditions (windy and its out).  The 30* will stay out of the bag unless something changes.

Bottom line for me is that these are good long iron replacements.  I guess I don't consider 30* a long iron and 26* is borderline.

Perfect! I am using a mp h5 and the sole is about 2.85cm, so a little cumbersome sometimes, really interested in these hogans
