Time to change irons

Recommended Posts

Srixon 545 irons are tough to beat.

I bounce between a 5 and 7 handicap and I game the "game improvement" 545s because they give me the forgiveness I want in a package that is cleaner than a lot of "players" clubs.

Hardly any offset with them, as well.

I think the 545's are one of the most balanced irons made in the past few years where you could see anywhere from scratch golfers to 20 handicap golfers gaming them.

Couldn't agree more with this.  I've been to a few demo days this year and hit Cobra, Nike, Titleist, Ping, Callaway, Mizuno.

If I didn't have the Callaway Apex in my bag these would be in there.

They are just as good and not nearly as expensive.  (I'm between a 10-13 hcp)

I tried them out during demo days and was actually disappointed.

I'm following this thread, because I too, am looking for new irons.

That's the same thing I thought when I hit them. Very disappointing

Interesting. I have gained at least a club distances wise with them. Kicked the J15 irons out of the bag.

If the Apex are out due to pricing, I would go for the JPX 850 Forged.

Callawaypreowned.com has always been good to me... And you know they've been inspected closely by Callaway!

I got my Apex's for 400.

I will have to agree with the consensus to look at the Apex line or JPX line for something comparable.

I have hit the XR pros and have to say they really smash the ball but they do lack in the feel department in comparison to the others listed.

... I play to a +.4 and if I were buying new irons the 545's would be at the very top of my list. I am really looking forward to the 645's and can see them in my bag sometime in the future.

Going out on a limb here with the Nike rec. but I play the VR_S Forged irons. They maintain some of the feel of a forged iron but are still EXTREMELY long for me. They are older than the apex irons but you can get them new for half the price.

The main pros are forgiveness and playability that few other mid-handicap sets lack.

CONS: slight stinging sensation on bad miss-hits. Availability.

I'm not sure about their availability anymore. I figure you want to buy new, used sets hover right around $299.00 on eBay.

I think these irons are a hidden gem and perfect for what you are looking for. But then again I play them so I am biased, in any case maybe some to consider. Hope you find what your looking for!

I'm also in the market for a "new" set of irons. I'm gonna go the eBay route but I've narrowed it down to srixon 545s cobra flyz+ and mizuno mp54. I've not hit the flyzs. Anyone have any input or the cobras or 54s? The 545s are the clear front runner right now.

If you are a 5 to 20 Hcap, and want new irons, may I suggest the cobra F6 irons.  Not only are they affordable ($799) but they can help you work the ball.

Just today I was fitted for Ping G30's .... I had it down to Srixon and Ping .... Surprisingly it wasn't even close per the fitter.

I do recommend a fitting. This was my first time, I was nervous, but I can't argue with results, I was hitting 7 iron 165. My current clubs that's my 6. Very excited to gain yardage

Pings are great! I like the clean look of the Srixons but those Pings are a bit more forgiving and can't beat their durability.

The only thing I always keep in mind with trying irons is the lofts of the irons - when I went from RSI2 to MP25 I was just happy to see similar distances due to better fitting shaft since the MP lofts are an easy club or so weaker.

I actually recently went old-school with my irons. The course I play most often is a windy track. Very windy. It can be calm in the parking lot, but there will be a 2-club wind out on the course. So I went a little old-school hoping to actually lower flight a little bit and give me some versatility and trajectory control, as well as a slightly lower trajectory anyway. I bought an old used set of Golfsmith Tour Cavities, dipped them in acid so they turned black, custom paint-filled them, then put my Axe TourX graphites in them and went to work. Pretty happy with the results. Are they the most forgiving? No, but that's not what I was after. But...they are forgiving enough. A pretty forgiving head with some trajectory control available. And they look sharp dressed in black...

Just got back from the fitting with a new set of iron's and 3 wood. Got fitted for the Nike Vapor Fly Pro irons in x stiff KBS tour C-tapers. They slightly out performed the Mizuno jpx 850 forged. I played a bit hard to get at the end and got them to throw in a Nike Vapor Fly 3 wood thrown in at no extra cost! Really happy with my fitting and the clubs that I got.
