Superstitions

We golfers are a funny lot... spend 2-6 hours following a little ball over 6 to 7 thousand yards and even crawling through woods, weeds, sticks looking for it when it goes awry.

 

Some of us also are a bit superstitious.   

 

What are some of your most interesting superstitions?

 

For me: 

  if I play a really good round while wearing a particular hat I wear that hat until I play a bad round with it.  then it goes back on the shelf.

 

  if I'm putting poorly while using a particular ball marker that marker goes back in the bag and I don't use it again for quite some time

I look at the target 3 times before I swing the club. That goes along with 3 waggles. I don't know if that's superstition or OCD

Not sure if it's superstitions or just habit for me, but I keep the same number of tees in my pocket all the time. Break one, get another from my bag to replace it. Also when I mark my ball on the green I always have one side of the marker facing down.

Neither of these help me play any better or worse.

I know someone who waggles 5 times    It's probably  OCD , well maybe not, 5 and 3 are odd numbers . My OCD would have to  be even numbers

I waggle a lot and I just noticed it the other day. I waggle till I'm ready to hit the shot and it's probably really annoying to watch

Hey... Jason Dufner has had quite a bit of success doing it!

The only one I have is cleaning my clubs. I like to think it cleanses the clubs of the bad shots and prevents them from carrying over to the next round

 

Throughout the cleansing I'm reminded of all the good shots - the swatch of grass on the center of the face, the specks of white ball cover from hitting a full wedge.

 

Maybe it's also positive and mental reinforcement hahaha

Never use a broken tee on the course. On the range is fine. Always mark my ball with a quarter oriented so the head points at the hole. Also never talk to a ball on the green. In the air is Ok.

As an ex-baseball player (I had hundreds of little rituals) one that has carried over is a glove adjusting ritual. Three times I undo the Velcro and tighten it in a quick motion.

I really only have one and this is I'll never enter the tee from the front.  As a matter of fact, I'll never walk in front of the tee markers until after I've hit.  If there's a tee up there or something in front of the tee markers, I won't pick it up until after I hit.  If I'm walking toward the tee from the previous green, I'll completely circle the tee box and come in from the back.

Not as sever as some of the other here, but I never take my glove off. Unless it's wet (sweat or rain) but then I put a dry one right back on.

 

I think it started back when I was younger and had a bad round putting. This next day my putting was amazing and the only thing I did different was leave my glove on.

Carry xtra ball in pocket. Only use a broken tee on par 3s. Ok scratch broken tees.. Just not long tees..

I carry a ball in each pocket. ball marker, divot tool, driver tee, and short tee for 3 wood in right pocket. Take my glove off and put it in right back pocket after I reach the green. Won't write a score down until I reach the next tee box or the clubhouse after 18.

Mine are more clothing related. I will not wear white shirt or white shoes after Labor Day and before Memorial Day. Conversely, I will not wear black shirt or black shoes after Memorial Day and before Labor Day.

Actually, I don't believe in the superstitious mumbo jumbo stuffs on the course, as long as I have only the same size white tees in my right pocket and same number on the ball on my left and occasional flip the my Oakley upside down when putting uphill.

I used to get all psyched up for rounds that were important to me and take great care to make sure my personal hygiene was handled to a tee with my freshest clothes. I think I was taking it too serious because I never really played that well.

 

Now my superstition is to not try that hard. Seriously. I make it a point to just wear casual clothes and tuck in the shirt sometimes and just.... You know..... Whatever. No sweat just playing some golf brah.

Swing the club already!!!! (in response to the Jason Duffner waggle video-- It drove me CRAZZZZY!!!)

 

I am a firm believer in, and love to quote Bush 43, during his interview with Feherty- when he said his grandfather saw his swing and said - "Well, you will never be a good golfer, but if you play fast, the good golfers will let you play along with them!"  Hit it and move on, be ready for your turn, and play ready golf!!!

I always mark my ball with a Blue dot to the Right of the name. When putting I always turn the ball so it's white when i look at it, no line no logo nothing,.. I only use natural colored or white Tees.. Birdie or better ALWAYS has honors. Keep glove on except to pee, DUH... Always congratulate someone on a good shot whether i like them or not.. 

 

Racing Quads for years I had a lot of them.. Always wore sun glass tinted lenses. Right boot first. Same socks, unitl they wore out ( yes washed every week) Same t-shirt under jersey ( again washed every week) visualize the start while waiting to get called to the line. Same routine to get to the track every week..

You should take a look at criquet shirts. They come with some luck, plus the "God Father" himself is part owner.

I've been using the same Martini tee for nearly 3 years now. I also used to use only international coins in marking my golf ball, but not anymore.

I always use a ball that I have placed in the ball washer when hitting over water.   The theory is that you never use a thirsty ball over water.
