Okay guys... hoping this isn't a repeat but just trying to gauge the community on how everyone determines yardage while playing.

I'm reviewing the new TomTom2 watch for the forum and this will help me with the Stage 2 review.  Thanks in advance!

If you use a GPS device what is it and what do you like/dislike about it?

Watch?

Smartphone app?

Laser rangefinder?

Something else?

ALSO ... if money was NO object what would you have?

I use a laser 90% of the time and app on my phone the rest.

If I play a new course it'll be about 70/30 in favor of my phone.

I use a laser.  Used to have a GPS that I really liked, but you had to download courses to it and it wasn't the speediest of devices.  In all fairness it was an old Callaway one that was very nice when I got it (compared to others on the market at the time) but when it came time for a replacement I went with the laser.  It's just faster and easier for me to use.

If money was no object I would have both devices.  I would use the laser as I currently do for just about everything.  However the nice thing about the GPS with a big color screen is when you are playing unfamiliar courses you can get a flyover or overhead view of the hole.  I can always use my phone for this in a pinch as well though.  But hey, you said money was no object!

I use Golf Pad on my phone. So far, they've had every course I've played but they had one marked wrong. Sent them an email and it was fixed in a couple of days.

I also have an old Bushnell laser that I keep in the bag as a backup but it rarely sees daylight.

If money was no object, I'd honestly keep what I've got or maybe get a pro membership with The Grint.

I'm a laser user, for me is nice to be able to shoot and know distances to things other than the hole.

If money was no object id like some sort of hybrid so it's all in one unit. I'm not a fan of having to carry around multiple devices.

My wife and I have both GPS (no watch) and laser.  She tends to use the laser, I use the GPS most of the time.  It's faster, gives me what I need to get on the green, but not go off the back.  Knowing distance to the pin is nice, but I also need to know if the pin is front or back.

Usually laser, occasionally I'll use the markers if I haven't got line of site, mostly for lay ups. I tend to rely on visuals when pitching from close range. If I forget to get the range finder back off my daughter, I use the markers and hope I get my guess of pin position correct.

I'll use course markings a lot of the time, especially if I can get good yardage book for the course.  I'm old-school that way.  I've seen enough times that a GPS will conflict with properly installed yardage markers that I don't entirely trust GPS.  I also use a laser for hole distances, but I want to know front and/or back yardages too, and that info I can get from the on-course markers most times.

I carry the Garmin G6......it can handle 3 rounds of golf, keeping score, recording club distance and reports FIR, GIR & total putts.

I also stay aware of land markers and my distance to them to verify.  I also carry a Laser which I use for the Par 3's.

I prefer to use both on courses that I am not familiar with.  Garmin Fenix 3 watch and Bushnell Tour V2 Laser.  (time to upgrade).  When I am playing a course that I know, I will typically only rely on the laser.  I prefer to use the GPS to find the front and back of greens, and perhaps carry yardages over hazards.  On courses that I know, this is less of an issue....

I use a Golf Buddy VS4 gps, it gives me instant yardages for front, center, and back pins. It also gives me shot distances to show how far I hit my last shot. That's all I really need at the moment, If money was no object, I'd want to try a laser like the Bushnell. Does it really make that of a difference in accuracy gps vs laser?

Another question that ties in with this:

Do you find that you "need" a yardage finder on your home course that you probably know like the back of your hand? I rarely ever bother with it playing "at home".

Even if I am playing at a course that I have played 1000 times, I will want the exact yardage to the flag. It allows me to make a very confident (or confused) swing, without worrying "Am I 125 or 130??"  Knowing that I am 127 frees up my pea sized brain for other tasks....

Rangefinder for me. I have used apps and a motoactv watch until they seemed to stop supporting it. Rangefinder makes me feel as close to 100% without slope that I have the right club. GPS still seemed to have a bit of guess work. Been playing a few strokes better since picking it up!

I'm still using my Leupold GX-3 from years ago. Does everything I require, haven't looked at anything else.

That is what my son is using and likes it a lot.

I use a laser range finder. Pros: exact yardage, easy point and shoot. Cons: I don't always trust the slope function and you can't really shoot to a flat area like a bunker or water.

125 or 130 doesn't really concern me. That's a 9 iron for me, regardless of 5 yds. one way or the other...lol.

I wish I was good enough to worry about 5 yds. I'm happy with being on the green in regulation. Maybe some day.............

I have the best luck when I focus on very precise targets and yardages.  Even if I am not consistent enough to hit it 127 all the time, if I focus on TRYING to hit it 127, I will more often than not be right around pin high...  If my yardage target is "about 130 ish" I have no concept of how far to hit that shot, and the indecision will seep into my swing ,and I will end up in the lumberyard 80% of the time..

YMMV..

I use The Grint if I'm on a course without any markers.

Go ahead and ready the pitchforks, but I almost prefer guesstimating yardages on courses with markers. That way when I stick one close from "about 98 yards" I can ramble on about how I'm a feel player.

Seriously though, if money were no object, I'd own the best laser money can buy. Wish I had one now. Sadly it may not be in the budget for a while. Until it is, The Grint and "about 96 yards" will have to do.

Crap. After seeing this one, I should've gone the caddy route...IF MONEY WERE NO OBJECT, I'd hire Fluff...or, in the spirit of the post, Margot Robbie, to follow me around the course with a laser and GPS and whisper yardages to me.

I agree, this is the main reason I want a laser. My phone performs a million other tasks, and I run it through the ringer enough as it is. I would much rather have something more durable made for the specific task.

I know this may sound crazy but I use the old school step off and my eyes. I played through college and amateur with no laser. My buddies will play with me I will step it off while they hit their shots and measure it with my eyes. I'll tell them what I have and they will come over and laser it to find out I am + or - inside a yard.

I use my Bushnell for pins and carry distances over stuff.  I will be aware of what part of the green the pin is on and factor that into my clubbing decision (front pin I'm likely to take extra club, back pin a little less unless there is some other factor.)

My normal playing companions have GPS which I will use to measure drives on occasion.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD
