Been thinking about shafts lately, which I've mentioned, but there's a change recently....

It's increasingly obvious that I don't hit the ball anywhere near as high anymore as I used to.  Especially watching a younger friend of mine hit shots that I used to exceed in trajectory, hitting the ball a magnitude or two higher than what I hit now.

So, shaft experimentation is on hold.  I may be switching things up a bit.  Pulled my Eye2+ out of the golf room closet, the set I set aside because the trajectory was so high it created an unwelcome distance gap at the short end of the set.  Put them in the bag for yesterday.

I also own a set of ISI, which I hit even higher than the Eye2+.  However, they have DGX shafts, which are a bit much for a full round for me these days.  Combine that with the graphite shafts I've been using....

and I am thinking about picking up a newer set of Pings, with graphite shafts to suit me.  Possibly delving into the world of Sub 70.

Or...   finally picking up a set of MP-14s, or reverting to the MS-11s that I also set aside due to trajectory "entertainment."

Every damm year, I do all this crap at the end of the season.  You could set a watch (or calendar) by it...

I’m thinking very seriously about putting a 5 hybrid in my bag again.

It’s not that I don’t like my 5 iron, I do. It’s just that there are so many times I pull it out of the bag and wonder to myself why I won’t just make things easier for myself? If I’m in a fairway bunker or rough about 160-165 out I’m kicking myself for not having one. I love 3&4 hybrids, but there’s just something weird about looking at a 5 hybrid at setup, especially if I’m hitting it on a par 3.
It just seems to my eye it has so much more loft than a 5 iron, and instead of feeling comfortable with that, I’m the opposite. My brain tells me the ball is going to go almost straight up in the air when I hit it, and it’s going to come up short. Then I swing harder to “get it there”. I know this makes very little sense, but a lot of things my brain tells me make little to no sense.

Not an easy decision…

I'm thinking about irons or, maybe, new shafts for my irons.

As I'm getting more consistent with my game I'm now thinking that a fitting would be good so I'm selling off loads of old stuff to get a pot of cash together for a purchase.

Currently playing MP32 with DG S300 shafts that I bought off eBay so I'm not sure the shafts are right for me. Love how the clubs feel so started thinking I might be better looking at shaft options rather than a completely new set but there's so many shiny things out there and I've not had a new set before....

I have started dropping hints to my wife that I could use a new bag. Getting midsize grips in and out of the current 6-way bag is driving me a little crazy. I wanted one club, not 3 thank you! Thinking a Sun Mountain LS 4.5 with the 14 way top would make a good birthday/Christmas gift for me.

I can't stop thinking about new clubs. I was looking at a full bag fitting in the spring, but the funds just aren't there to act on it.

I just keep telling myself a new driver won't add yards, currently gaming a Titleist 915.

I can't stop looking at the Srixon Z785/ZX7 irons. I wonder if a more forgiving iron would help me. I know I would hit these further as Srixon is slightly loft-jacked over my 714CBs. I don't think I need or want more offset. I don't have a big miss either way with the irons. Been tracking my stats and I miss greens equally to the left and right. So I think I'm actually good with standard L/L/L.

Can't decide, guess I'll keep staring at eBay.

... As someone that has reviewed clubs for over 20 years now, new clubs rarely make a difference with your score. The exception is those that are playing ill fitted clubs. Of course if you are fit into new clubs that are substantially different there can be a very big difference in your scores and overall play. Most new "jacked" irons don't hit the ball any further when comparing loft to loft, although changing from a solid CB to a multi material thin faced iron may add some yards. But using a range finder if you hit your old 9 iron 125 yds and your new PW 125 yds, the flag, ball and score card doesn't care what your iron has stamped on the bottom.  I have also repeated my mantra over and over gain that every player should use the most forgiving irons they can effectively play, so a more forgiving iron may also make a difference in your scoring.

... I have loved playing new irons because it keeps things fun but rarely made any difference in my scores. That said, after so many years of constant change I am looking forward to keeping my MIM Tour irons in the bag for a second year.

... LOL, there were more than a few times I ending up liking my old clubs more than the new ones and eventually switched back after writing a long term playing review. Perfect example is my TP UDi 2 iron. I will play a new club that is more versatile especially from the fairway or light rough but sooner or later go back to my 2 iron because it is just so reliable off the tee and a perfect match for hard, fast desert fairways. Now if I lived in Minnesota I would ... who am I kidding, I would never live in Minnesota. ☃️ 🤣

So here's the deal. I play to a 3. I was professionally fit for my Driver (Titleist 915). I "fit" myself into my current irons. And by that I mean I went to GG and hit about 15 different shaft/head combinations, settled on the the Titleist CBs with DG X100 and then went on eBay and bought an older model with those shafts (I tested the 718s, and found a sweeeeet deal on the 714s) because I don't have $1400 for a new set of irons.

I'm not looking to hit the ball much further. Driver is 270ish and 7i carry is 172. There's a dozen courses in Northern Ohio that get up over 6800+ from the tips. Distance is not the issue, I think I just need to dial everything in super tight to get those last few strokes off my game.

I know what the real answer is - quality practice, play more, and go get fitted. It's been echoed hundreds of times on here. I had to run out this afternoon, and I stopped back into GG and hit about a dozen shots with the ZX7, and TBH I didn't like it. Every hit felt the same, and the Trackman had the ball going about 8-12 yards less than my current set when the Srixon is 4 degrees stronger, it was showing a fade, and I hit draws. Anyway, I don't trust GG further than I can throw them. I just know the club did not feel great. Titleist should be dropping a new set of CB/MB this offseason, so maybe I could just upgrade to those 718s.

I think your mantra is a good one. I think it concisely captures what I was trying to accomplish. I feel like I'm a pretty good player...but should I really be gaming a tour level blade?

I would be surprised if titleist drops cb or mb irons anytime soon. They typically release all their irons together and chose not to do a cb and mb release this year because there want much to improve on and would expect the next iterations to come in two years when the  next iron cycle is released especially since next year summer/fall will be the new woods and hybrid release.

Thinking about snow shoes and orange balls....

Saw this report yesterday and two rain storms for this week are being called "nor'easters" which is something every New England golfer fears as it's generally brought up as a winter storm pattern.

image.png.d2c19241553dc6483724bbe0ed3ae607.png

Thankfully I'm pretty sure that snow was just due to the winds and elevation along the Kancamagus, but still...

Also a wellness check on @ejgaudette you staying warm up there buddy?

Had to break down and turn the heat on. Thankfully none of the white stuff here but yes tons of rain for the whole region which sucks. Yeah the mountains though probably gonna be getting snow from now on.

Mevo+ update with the additional club data would be a great Christmas gift.

I've been eyeing raw Sub70 639CBs. Figured I'd build them with some Recoil 110 F5s and something fun from BB&F Co.

Also have no funds for new purchases at the moment so just dreaming!

The 620s were released in August 2019. and I thought they were an every-other-year release. I just assumed the new version would be dropping soon. Oh well.

Anyway, when I played in mid-40 temps and wet on Sunday I hit 13 greens, maybe I don't need new irons after all.

You are correct in the timeline of the 620 release and they would have released the new version a couple months ago with the t100,100s,200 and 300. But they decided to not do the cb and mb. So the next time we would see a release would be in summer/fall 2023.

Titleist has surprised everyone in the recent past with tsi1 and 4 wood releases and the 100-s after the t100 were released so it’s not impossible to see a cb and mb mid cycle release I just wouldn’t expect it based on them passing this cycle due to no improvements that could be made over the 620 release

thinking about going back to graphite iron shafts after a short stint with steel. just a little worried about how my body will hold up long term (i have some pre-existing issues that i don't want to aggravate), and that will always be in the back of my mind with steel.
