What equipment are you thinking about?

I’ve had a new wedge on mind. My Mack Daddy CB is 2 years old now. I was looking at Edison but decided to wait until the Most Wanted came out. Now thinking about the PXG 0311 forged. Especially given the Veteran’s pricing at $129 and free shipping. 🤔 But which shaft?

Are you going to go to Pete’s Golf for the fitting?

Pete's is a great shop! ..been there a few times. Probably end up there; definitely trust them. There's a True Spec in the city, but I don't like going into the city... There's also a Club Champion not too far away; but yeah you have to be careful of the sales / upsell pitches.

I've been going to GolfTec for lessons - yes I know I know about their fittings - but that and PGATSS are convenient for *trying out* the major brand clubs.

I too have been on a quest this year for hybrids.  To begin with, I decided to replace my Ping G hybrids.  Through eBay mostly, I have purchased used Taylormade, Mizuno, Tour Edge, Titleist, and Callaway hybrids.  The hybrid reserving a spot in my bag is the Callaway Rogue.

Looking at their offerings I think I'd go for the ProjectX Cypher 60i.  Seems somewhat similar to the Fubuki.  Too bad the 19° is already sold out. 😞

I am going to book a putter fitting in a few weeks.  Currently practicing with  an old Scotty Cameron Squareback.  I like the heavy putter head feel with the super slim SC pistol grip.

As I get older I am starting to get rock hands as I lose the feeling of the putter which makes distance control more difficult.

I'll let the fitter at TXG do his thing to guide me to the correct putter.  It has worked so far with the rest of my bag.

I am confident I will find a putter with the right putter stroke characteristics.  The harder part might be the feel for distance control.  I have been trying some old putters I have and it seems the head weight, grip size and grip weight make a difference for distance control.

  • 3 weeks later...

Had the putter fitting this past Thursday using the new Quintic software.  First thing was making sure set up alignment was to the centre of the hole multiple times during the fitting.  Bang on every time, happy no issues.

Alignment at impact was blue on almost every put.  Again happy there were no issues starting the put on the proper line.  Putter had the thinnest Ping pistol grip which caused a slight rotation in the through stroke.  Changed the grip to a slightly thicker pistol grip which eliminated the slight rotation.

Changed the loft one degree for a better roll.  Fitter advised me to never change the putter.

Did a putter fitting with Edel around 10 years ago.  Tried a few putters but was advised to stay with the Mizuno putter.  I changed to a round grip and used it for years.  Made the mistake of trying an oversized grip which turned out horrible for me.

Putter fitting was worth it to me so I never have to second guess my equipment.  If I miss a put I know it will be the user error.

I am on the hunt (again for the 3rd time) to find the club that goes right behind my driver in the bag. Ideally, a club that I can hit off the deck and a tee and get at least 220 carry out of. Currently, I have a dinky 20* 4 hybrid that is built to 37" long (a single length hybrid even though I don't play single length clubs). Anyway, this is what I am currently getting out of it:

image.png.86bcb5c502415bde0c3a69e8d3138490.png

So I was doing ball testing today and at the end decided to mess around with a few hybrids and utility irons (I don't tend to get along with fairway woods - I have a 3 wood, 4 wood and 5 wood that are all collecting dust in my garage). I hit the Ping Crossover 3i (decent), Stealth DHY 3i (good) and then, just on a whim, the Rogue ST Max 3 hybrid (18* and 40.50" long). And uh, yeah, it was good (for me):

image.png.80803885ba7d6c48fa262ecffc417183.png

These are basically 5 Wood numbers for me. And this is off the mat as well. It makes sense and I don't know why I was fighting it for so long. I like a shorter club, fairway woods always felt too long. A hybrid is generally at least an inch if not two inches shorter and as long as I can elevate it enough at a lower loft why not use it? Anyway dispersion was decent as well. So I may be getting a 18* hybrid and I may be getting this Rogue. I will try to hit at least one other lower lofted hybrid and do it on another day to make sure I didn't just catch lightning in a bottle (dispersion below is rinky dink 4hybrid vs Rogue Max - there is probably an argument to play both of them since the gap is so large):

I have an appointment for fitting new wedges.  My current wedges are Ping Glide.  The bounce on each is too high (12-14 degrees) for my home course when it dries out over the summer causing me to skull the ball at times.

Works out well since the guys at TXG are familiar with my home course as well as another out of the city I play at regularly with friends and family.  The second course is softer in the fairways with more wet, compact sand.

Hope I can get the new clubs soon so I can practice with them all winter.

Took a ride to PGASS yesterday to try the Mizuno Pro 225 with my gamer ball against the Forged Tec.  It’s a tall order since I have trouble finding a fault in the performance of the Cobras.

00DF81C7-1D0A-4FD4-AE1D-AC21CAD36BB6.jpeg

I basically have a nice even 15 yards between my irons, they’re easy to hit, pretty forgiving too.

So why am I doing this? Besides being a low grade club Ho… I had tried these at an Expo and thought the feel was great, and the looks too!

13E0A7F8-AD87-491A-9C87-E9315D5A6D4C.jpeg

while the Cobra’s have that high Tec modern look the Mizzy’s are classic and clean. Now I was probably hitting marshmallows, so I needed to try with my ProV1x to see. Feel was still great yesterday… very tempting.

But what did the numbers say?

D631A4A0-A737-41F3-BE65-EA0FA09946BA.jpeg

those are my best 9 with each… some shanks, chunks, and thins were excluded, I haven’t played in a while and I’m not looking to see if the ball rolled out further after I laid sod over it. 🤪

generally it seems my spin was a bit higher, which I view as good. A few more yards of carry, and more stopping power.

I really liked the slightly more compact shaping of the Mizzys too, the Forged Tec may just have met their match!

It is amazing how much joy I get in other people getting new clubs... I think it is a no brainer go for it!

It is amazing how much joy I get in other people getting new clubs

... Don't we all! Several years ago I charted a few rounds to see what clubs I used the most and was a little shocked at how little I used my irons. Wedges were used much more and throw in some hybrids and a few fairway woods and my irons just weren't used that much. At $1300 and up for irons it is pretty amazing that the cost per shot is much higher than anything else in our bag ... yet they continue to be what draws my/our attention in any golf store. Like an old western, the Winchesters, Sharps, shotguns and other weapons pale in comparison to the shiny revolvers residing in a cool holster slung low that are the new irons of stud cowboys. There are probably only a handful on this forum that didn't buy new irons because we needed them but because we just wanted them.
