... Don't we all! Several years ago I charted a few rounds to see what clubs I used the most and was a little shocked at how little I used my irons. Wedges were used much more and throw in some hybrids and a few fairway woods and my irons just weren't used that much. At $1300 and up for irons it is pretty amazing that the cost per shot is much higher than anything else in our bag ... yet they continue to be what draws my/our attention in any golf store. Like an old western, the Winchesters, Sharps, shotguns and other weapons pale in comparison to the shiny revolvers residing in a cool holster slung low that are the new irons of stud cowboys. There are probably only a handful on this forum that didn't buy new irons because we needed them but because we just wanted them.

How true! I sometimes go 2 or 3 rounds without hitting my 5 and 6 irons for anything except for punching out from trees and getting back in the fairway. I also have rounds when I don’t hit my 7-wood, and then a few days later I hit the same 7-wood 5 or 6 times.

DR - Callaway Paradym X, Newton Motion 4-Dot

4W - T.E. Exotics C722, Diamana D+ 82-S

HYB - Paradym X 18*, HZRDUS Smoke Red 80S; Sub 70 949X 21*, same shaft

7W (if played) - Callaway Epic Flash, ACCRA Tour X 80S

Irons - Cobra Forged Tec X (5-GW), KBS TGI 75-R

Wedges - Edison 2.0, 53* and 57* (bent to 58*), KBS TGI 100

Putter - Makefield VS custom, 34", 67* lie, 1.75* loft

Ball - Maxfli Tour-X CG (2023) or Vice Pro Plus (OnCore ELIXR or Maxfli Tour S in winter)

Bags - Vessel

Cart - MotoCaddy M7 Remote (without the remote)

Spoiler

driver / off the tee is no longer a weakness for me!

::raises hand:: 😂

Nope - don't "need" new irons.
Yep - do "want" new irons.

Have a demo Forged TEC X 7i which I'm liking compared to the 0211s; and thinking about taking both to an iron fitting to get a pro view on what else may work better for me. Looking for a nicer feel, if possible, along with better control and dispersion .. if possible!

Very different player than you but just fyi I've tried a bunch of hybrids and ended up with a Rogue ST Max OS 4H (Cypher Black shaft) .. really like it!

Well, I bought it (the Rogue ST Max 3 hybrid - 18*) off of Callaway Pre-Owned for $175. It is in excellent condition, I must say. I finally got it out on the course yesterday and I hit it off the turf twice and off the tee 4 times with the following results (using Taylormade MyRound Golf Gps to track distances, this is TOTAL not carry):

Off the turf: 211 yds and 227 yds (I hit the first one a bit out of the heel and pured the second one)
Off the tee: 264 yds (excuse me....what?), 249 yds, 266 yds (again, what?), 240 yds

All were straight with a slight draw except for the one out of the heel. I have to say that the distance is staggering, especially off the tee. I legitimately am encroaching on my driver with this thing. For reference, I hit driver 4 times yesterday with yardages of 271, 265, 270, 277. And only hit 1/2 the fairways with that. So what am I to make of this? Is this just a new club honeymoon phase? I will say it is tricky if I am, say, 210 yds out and there is trouble long I am worried about hitting the hybrid OVER the green but that is a very small problem. More so, the thing is absolutely nuclear and straight. Has totally made me rethink my bag setup and callaway golf clubs in general. Based solely off of yesterday's round, I think my bag carry distances now looks like this:

Driver: 255 yds
3 (18*) Hybrid: 230 (off tee), 220 (off turf)
4 (20* but also only 37" length) Hybrid: 205 (off tee), 195 (off turf)
5 (26*) iron: 180
etc....

Someone please stop me from going ALL callaway now. Driver, maybe Rogue ST Pro irons (well maybe not since the 7 iron is 30.5* -- that would require a big bag shakeup as my current 7 iron is 34*)? I reserve the right to retract all these statements after a bad round with the hybrid but it may have solved like 3 different problems I had previously. I had no consistent club that could carry more than 200 yds off the turf, I needed a longer club off the tee for tight driving zones and I wanted a club I could "sling" around doglegs. Well, so far check, check, check.

Love CPO!! Looking at a Rogue Max ST OS 7i like new on there with an extra -25% off sale going on...

As for Callaway hybrids - several years back I'd demo'ed the XR 4H and really liked it. Was in the bag for a few years until I started .. mistakenly .. thinking I needed something "better", which no I did not well-define at that time, and kinda wasted time and $$ with a few different hybrids in and out of the bag... Tried the Rogue ST Max OS (sheesh could they add another set of initials and acronyms in there? 😉) and it just clicked for me - nice feel, easy to hit and for me reeeally good distance.

Thinking about a Ping iCrossover to replace my 5 iron to make it a bit more consistent. My current 5 is at 23 so it can be a bit low, so a bit more height and speed might help. Plus the loft sleeve would be an added bonus to turn it down if it get a bit too hot

  • 2 weeks later...

Working on my putting and want to experiment a little bit with the putters playing length so I want to try and find an adjustable length shaft or fitting putter for a reasonable price since it will mostly be an experiment.

I know a few Ping models (Scottsdale TR and Sigma 2) have adjustable length but they are in the $150 range used.   I found that Apollo made an adjustable one, but can't find a place to purchase.  Also wondering if there is a way to DIY something that is stable enough to actually use.

Was talking with my instructor today while helping him setup a new Trackman and got to talking new Callaway releases since he's on staff with them.

He hadn't seen the new driver yet but from his contacts they think it's one of their best in years.

Might have to troll eBay for an early season castoff from someone...

I think for the range finders and some smaller things you can go for the Nikon or the Sig. I don't want to mention the model. You can choose according to your need.

I've had a 7 wood for a couple of years. Gave it a short trial and set it aside for 2 years. Tried it again this fall and loved it. Now I'm looking for a 9 wood. I'm aging so fast I'm replacing hybrids with iron shafts to high lofted- long shafted fairways.

I've got a guy looking to sell me a bunch of Callaway clubs:

- Epic Max Driver, Mavrik 5 wood, Rogue ST Max irons (5-AW), and 56 and 60 Jaws MD5 wedges.

I'm your typical high handicapper, and I've never bought new clubs before, always played hand-me-downs or a box set I got for my birthday when I was 18 (32 now).

Does anybody have any experience with these clubs? Reviews or recommendations? I'd appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks!

Driver - Ping G425 Max

Fairways - Ping G430 Max (3w, 5w)

Irons - JPX 923 Hot Metal HL (5-G)

Putter - Odyssey Stroke Lab Black (V-Line)

Ball - Titleist ProV1x (Yellow) / Srixon Z Star Divide

I'm waiting for Vokey wedges to run their limited Slate Blue finish for their SM9s.  I played over 100 rounds in 2022 and need fresh wedges for 2023.
