Great Rules Site

I've mentioned this before in other posts. There is a great site by a guy named Barry Rhodes. Each Thursday morning I get an email with a couple of rules question and answer quizzes with explanations. It's a great way to learn. I highly recommend signing up for the email. When you are at the home page look around and especially click on the link for the Rhodes Rules School. I think you will enjoy it.

I thought I'd dredge this post back up again today. I really enjoy the site and especially my Thursday morning email with one or two rules situations explained. Just today one of the rules had to do with a ball marker sticking to the bottom of your putter after tapping it down. I've actually had that happen to me a couple of times. After reading the explanation I emailed Barry requesting further information and sure enough he responded within about 30 minutes. Pretty cool.

So what's the ruling in that situation?

There is no penalty provided your club/course introduced the local rule recommended by R&A and USGA from last January 2017. Accidentally moving a ball (or ball-marker) on the putting green. The ball marker must be replaced were it was prior to movement and no closer to the hole.

 

Unfortunately I cannot copy and paste into this window from my office PC or I'd insert the whole discussion I had with Barry. My situation was slightly different in that the marker stuck to the sole of my putter and then fell off several feet away from where I'd marked it. Barry said in that case and in his opinion I would incur a 1 stroke penalty. Good rules site.
