Your Top Training Aids

Recommended Posts

I might have posted on this before but I couldn't find it. Anyway....

Today I received and email from Tour Tempo - John Novosel about their Instagram site. I don't do Instagram but I do have the Tour Tempo app and the book Tour Tempo-1. What I used to do was wear my BT headphones, fire-up the app and go hit balls for a little while. I think there's merit to the training provided by Tour Tempo. If you use it of course. Perhaps I might give it another go and see what happens. I've been complaining some lately that my swing seemed to be getting a little quick from the top. (actually rushing and not getting a good shoulder turn) I need better Tempo.

Only one aid, given to me. The Kallassy swing magic 5i. Helps my grip and obviously arm position. Just a few timed swings, and ready for action.

I only have two. A Swingrite that was given to me many years ago, and an Orange Whip that I bought a couple of years ago. I use the Swingrite all winter and some during the season. I use the Orange Whip for warmup and tempo issues.

I like the orange whip for keeping my swing on plane and a bit of a core workout. I also like to hit a old Taylormade Pittsburgh Persimmon Driver on the range to warm up. Heavier club and really gets your ball striking right.

I bought two yellow reflective driveway markers from a home goods store to use as alignment sticks.  Such an inexpensive way to get alignment sticks.

The other training aid I just purchased was the Voice Caddie SC100.  I really enjoy going to the driving range and actually knowing how far my shots are carrying.  It also allows me to challenge myself to actually hit a specific target distance rather than just cracking ball after ball.

What's the difference between the SC100 and SC200? Any idea?

Honestly, no clue. The SC100 was a prize available through my company. I never have had the opportunity to explore the SC200.

The 200 has a target mode, basically it gives you a target distance to hit based on the club you have selected. Then you try to hit it, it gives you a score 1-10, 10 being best. It gives you ten targets and you try for a high score.

Also, it let's you put in the correct lofts for your clubs. Which if you are using a 35* 7i it won't matter. But if you are using a new set with crazy lofts the ability to adjust them to be correct makes it significantly more accurate.

Well after a little research and watching some drill videos on YouTube, I swung by the store and purchased an orange whip. Hopefully this can help me regain some of my tempo and fix my little release issue.

I'm a little surprised no one mentioned the impact snap. Have one ordered. The last lesson I had with my pro he told me the last part of the puzzle I had to learn was the ulnar deviation in my swing. I figured I'd give the impact snap a try.

Ha Ha! Consul, He never said that. What he really did was show me how to do it in about two minutes but it was the only thing I could never get used to that he showed me. That was two years ago. Ulnar deviation is what the Impact Snap people call it. So I figured that was the way to go. Sounds more definitive than saying down cocking I think. But I guesss not. Anyway, its the opposite of cocking your wrist up thumb up. Not to be confused with bending your right wrist back. I think anyway. But maybe not. See now I'm confused. LOL

Honestly one of the best training aids that I've ever used is the smart ball.  I've used this for about 9 months now and every time my swing feels off, it shows me where/why.  I have always been of the mindset to smash the ball and watch it fly.  A true grip it and rip it.  In doing that, my swing has become really long to get that power.  That has been causing a lot of inconsistency.  The smart ball is showing me how long my swing needs to be and that I can still be connected.  It's taken a while to try and break a 5 year habit (how long I've been playing), but I truly feel like it's working!  Plus look at how many tour pros are starting to use it now too.

Thanks for the reminder! I got one earlier this year on the advice of my instructor, but to try to fix kinda the opposite flaw .. have a tendency to get too "lifty" in the backswing and get disconnected..... So gotta use it more!

Winter golf can be testing off dormant bermuda IMO as the fairways tend to get pretty tight.

I'm going to break out my DST 8i next time I practice. As of late I've been playing ok but not making good enough contact - trapping it if you will. Too many thinish weak shots. It's a terrible feeling. I used to use the DST occasionally and benefited from it I thought.

Full Swing:

* Swing Caddy "Swing Impact" trainer - at the head end is a weighted cylinder that you rotate to "dial" distances from 25 yards up to 240; a scale shows you corresponding swing speed at each distance. Bought this to initially work on wedge distances over the winter; eg. develop a feel for 25 vs 40 vs 65. As you swing down it CLICKS to indicate the desired speed (distance) setting so the goal is to match the sound with the right spot in the swing - ie. right in front of your lead foot. It's a good exercise to try and get the sound to repeat at the exact same point over multiple swings!

- Is it exactly accurate? Probably not but one range session indicated it's pretty darn close; I compared 100 yds and in by swinging this then trying to replicate the same movement + effort with a wedge and a ball at a target.

- As you dial it "up" and have to swing faster, it definitely shows you where your swing is starting to go off by clicking at the wrong place .. either too early or too late. So it should remain a helpful tool as I work to improve my swing technique.

- Going to write up a more detailed review in the near future.

* Orange Whip - I'm liking it so much I'm gonna add the "Compact" version. It's taught me a lot .. and the more I use it, the more I get out of it.

* Alignment sticks - in this case old windsurf sail battens; they're flat so don't roll around as much as the round markers. I put one perpendicular to the target line, underneath me, to (1) align with the ball position, and (2) check that I rotate and weight shift to finish "over the line" on my lead leg on the target side of the stick.

* Balance Disks - in addition to, of course, work on balance while swinging an old weighted Medicus club, also use them to practice a simulated ball below the feet lie.

* Tour Striker Smart Ball - gives you direct feedback and helps you keep your arms working together plus more connected to the body (so you're using the body more). My pro recommends it.

* Power-Up Wedge - small plastic block you put on your trail foot to force you off of that foot and on to your lead side (won it on an Instagram giveaway from KCLeo).

* Chipping net - found one that sits on the ground (vs the basket type that stands up on legs) with an opening approx 18 1/2" x 17 1/2" and a removable target screen (made by Spornia). I use Almost Golf foam core practice balls with it.

Putting:

* Mirror (rectangular one with lines on it) - helps with setup and alignment, and with returning the putterhead back square.

* Two Shot Glasses (empty!) - use these as a gate; can quickly adjust them narrow/wide and vary distance from the ball; works well on indoor putting mats.

- want to add: metronome

Interesting the items we use to make a gate. I use sockets from a socket wrench set.
