What/How Did You Practice Today?

Had a really great lesson yesterday. Learned a new close-to-the-green chipping technique and worked hard on continuing to improve my iron swing, specifically better contact thru better weight transfer and better body rotation.

An hour of chipping and pitching from different lies, different distances to elevated targets.  Then 20 minutes of sand trap practice and ended with 15 minutes of putts from 4-20 feet.  Usually spend a few minutes hitting full shots as well but the range was full of the high school kids warming up for their match.

Yeah this seems to especially apply with the more lofted wedges - the faster you swing thru it, the more spin you generate and the higher/shorter the flight is....

I was hitting my 60° 90 yards with my old speed I use to hit at. This year at suggestion of a pro slow my speed down to become a better ball striker than speed it back up. I have definitely become way better at ball striking now to get my distance back.

Went to the range this morning primarily to develop a baseline SS for the Superspeed review.

But also worked in my wedges and fairway wood shots. I really like that Tour Exotics - very easy to hit - it reminds me of my old Cobra EZ.

Did some chipping practice, which has been sorely neglected lately. Had a bit of fun chipping a few balls with 3 different clubs to the same pin. Got a good sense of feel back, which is great because it's been lacking lately. Hit a few putts, but bailed out when I realised my hay fever injection was annoying me in my putting set up. Small price to pay if the injection works.

More chipping tomorrow, and hopefully a few times a week over the next few weeks. Full swing will get a couple of maintenance sessions, but short game needs some focus.

Not sure I fully can in words, but...

Basically, it's a very small motion .. but not a putter-like arms motion, it's using the body .. .. keep the weight forward, of course!, no shaft lean, wrists extended and "locked out" .. small turn back keeping the clubhead low and small turn through finishing with the clubhead still low.

Key is making a good body turn while keeping the arms connected and hands pointing "out" so the butt end of the club stays pointing at your navel through contact and through the finish.

This is for those small, close distances like, say, 12-15 or so yards where you need to clear some rough then let it run a few yards.

To change trajectory and rollout, just change clubs.

Had a nice practice session today -

My irons had over sized grips on them when I bought them last winter. I kept the grips to see if they might help my arthritis - they haven't really so I had them re-gripped yesterday with the proper size (1 additional wrap.)

Oh my - it really matters - I was amazed at how different the irons felt and the consistency of my ball flight.

I was also able to successfully perform my ball striking drills.

Played a practice round on the front nine after my wife closed up shop for the weekend; only one bogey.  There were times I hit two balls for a shot, but always played my first ball.  I did this mostly because FedEx delivered a new club today!!  I took out my Wilson Staff D300 5-wood, and put my new 17º D300 2H into play.  It's a little different feel, but I think I am going to like it.

Our greens are still a little bumpy from plugging two weeks ago, but I made several long putts more than 10 feet. One was a 20 footer for that stinking bogey.

I play two balls a lot too. I always count the first one but my goal when I am out on the course is to improve. I keep the ball for score and handicapping purposes and play one practice ball. I play fast and am almost always waiting. It keeps me from waiting too much and also helps me practice. My main goal in golf is to always improve. It may not be the conventional way to improve, but it is what works best for me.

There are so many things out on the course that you can do to practice that can't be done in the practice area.  Since my wife is still working, she only gets to play 18 holes on the weekends.  We lead into the weekend by 9-hole practice rounds on Thursday and Friday evenings.  That's about to stop now that it's getting dark earlier.  So she will only get 2 rounds in from now on until next spring.  When we play these 9-hole practice rounds, we don't keep score so we don't post for handicap, because we are playing extra balls.

I get to play 18 holes on Monday and Wednesday with guys from the club, and I practice on Tuesday and Thursday; sometimes in the practice area, sometimes on the course if it's empty.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

During my round, I worked on applying some of the tips that I got from Guerin Rife on putting. Initial feedback is that the tips will be very helpful and it was very kind of him to take time to help me with my putting stroke.

Some of the the drills are as follows (remember I miss left on putts):

Putt with two balls side by side and get them to roll side by side. When I first did this drill, the right ball was going further. Can fix with ball position or path change.

Move the ball up in stance and address ball normally. Should leave about inch or so gap between putter and ball. Putting this way will help reduce rotation. And help square the face at impact.

The one I like best which I apply during the round is to pick a spot right in front of the ball and make a stroke that has the center of the putter go over that spot. This really helped me with my shorter putts during the round. Guerin also told me this was good to do with full swing shots as well.

The short term effect i am seeing is better start line for my putts. Hopefully this turns into better reads as I get better at hitting my start-line.

We also talked about the need to keep the shaft vertical at setup. I did a pretty good job but he indicated that right eye dominant players have a tendency to lean the shaft backwards and led eye have a tendency to forward press. These tendencies sometimes result in inconsistent distance control due to incorrect

Loft.

I worked punch shots, full shots with attempted draws (don’t know that I’m gunna stick at trying this) and then a lot of chipping. Then more chipping, and then more.

then putted for about half an hour.

so, only about 3 hours at the facility...

Got back to the range today and identified what's bit plaguing my swing.  It turns out I have been taking the club back inside far too much and it has been leading me to open the face and come over the top.

Really focused on taking the club straight back today and it worked wonders.  The weak fades practically disappeared

Worked hard in my swing sequencing on the range today. Hit the ball very solidly until I got tired.

I would love to say that I saw a huge SS increase or any SS increase but nothing yet even though I’ve picked up tons of SS with the green club especially while doing the protocol

Been putting a lot in the living room during the evenings after dinner lately. Been trying a new stroke I've copied from Brandt Snedeker. I've been watching him play lately and noticed he has a very short backstroke and then a quick "tap & stop" hit style and the ball just leaps off the face real smooth and pretty accurately. I've emulated this and noticed my indoor accuracy increasing too. Going to put this style to the test tomorrow. We'll see...

Spent time yesterday prior to my round working on face angle of my putter. Setup a gate that was just wider than the ball and rolled the ball through the gate. Felt it really helped my with the 4-6 foot range when I was playing as my ball was rolling better and starting online. Think I am going to add a start line trainer to my Christmas list. I have used a yardstick but I think it is too wide to give the appropriate level of feedback necessary

Chilly and damp, misty and gusty, day .. so some (more) indoor chipping practice. I think maybe possibly perhaps could be that some of the instruction I've gotten over the past few years is actually starting to sink in.
(A little bit anyway. But it's progress.)
