What/How Did You Practice Today?

So... went to the range last night with my brother in law (first time in a week or two) and probably topped every iron shot or hit on the heel or toe of the club. I’m usually very much dead on with my irons but not now. Tried again today at the range with my son and the same deal... topped shots and all. I really hope this isn’t how I’m gonna end my season

I worked on hitting some chips yesterday. I have a pretty steep section so I was hitting a bunch of down hill lines and then did some 56° flop shots. Also worked on hitting what would be low shots I to bounce into a bank and then take the speed off after that happened, something Spieth has used a lot.

Thank you for the advice... I will check it out! I’ve been looking into lessons around me also... never had one, just watched YouTube videos. The range around the corner has 2 pros but they both seem like they have short tempers and get flustered quickly (seen them working with an old couple and was quite snippy with them). I don’t handle people like that for long haha

Yeah if you can, find an *amenable* pro with whom you get along .. the right pro can quickly isolate "the thing" for you to work on, and can communicate it to you effectively. If you can find that person it's worth the $$!

Absolutely!.. I have a few buddies with connections to a couple country clubs around me, hopefully they can help point me in the right direction if I decide to get lessons.

And I just put that DST Compressor 8i on my Christmas list haha. My wife is just gonna kill me

Chipped and putted for half an hour on Saturday. Hit a small bucket of 9 irons and drivers today working on swinging faster with driver.

That's a lot of white stuff!

I see you're using a propane heater - is that in a garage or basement?

I was thinking of buying one for my garage but concerned about co2 . Do you use a detector when you're running the heater?

This is the garage. I haven't bought a detector, though I might look into that. For now, I'm not out there terribly long, and the garage has lots of air leaks (it's detached). I think there might be enough breeze *in* the garage to keep the air fresh :-)

A co2 detector would be a good idea in addition to the 'fresh breeze' - I'm kinda OCD when it comes to safety items.

I'm definitely going to get one of those propane heaters - I can't practice in my garage because of the low ceilings and potential club marks n the drywall. However, I do have an old MGA that needs same work done on it and Ohio does get chilly in the winter.

Practiced the weakest part of my game putting. Found my stroke again but noticed that it's easier to repeat if I choke down and inch. Now I am debating taking an inch off the putter and changing grips.
It was the same for me. After a couple seasons of playing, I noticed I was always choking down an inch on 35" putters. When I bought my MLA a year ago, the default length was 34", and suddenly things made sense.

That's the same for me too. I find anything over 35" too long for me to handle well. I feel like there is too much shaft and I can't control it as well. I generally play 33" or 34". 33" in heavier putters and 34" in lighter putters. Keep in mind, I am 6' 2" and play my irons 1" over standard.

This is only 34 inches if I remember. I think I'm gonna go with a cut and new grip

Still off-topic, but... I got an electric heater which is plugged into a safety strip that I turn on/off (vs using the unit's so-called "off"). Not necessarily safer (or not) than a propane one but easier.

The question is what type of putter fitting? Just like full swing clubs not all putter fittings are equal.

Took the new Mizuno irons out on course for 9 holes yesterday. Hit iron off every tee except 2 longest holes. Trying to get a feel for real world distance. Happily they seem about 1/2 to 1 club longer for me. Results from less than perfect swings are better than I'm used to which certainly puts a smile on my face.

I didn't play well on Sunday; poor chipping and putting.  Yesterday I walked with guys at the club and played better; +2 on the front, then quit after #11 when it started raining.  Rained most of the night, but quit about sunup.  The course was wet, so today I decided to spend a couple of hours practicing.

After a short warmup on the range and hitting a few drivers, I went to the pitching area.  That was the worst part of my game this weekend. My tendency is to pull my shots left.  I know they are range balls, but I'm not working on how the ball reacts on the green.  I'm working on how straight to the target I can hit the ball. I hit a bucket of balls from 40 yards; OK but not great, so I picked them up and did it again.  I focused on making more of a turn on my backswing; better... here's the result.  Still have a way to go, but at least they aren't all to the left!!   FYI, I was aiming for the back pin.

Figured you guys would love this - life at a private club.

My 9 iron shaft broke at the handle on the range today - really?

So the fitter recommended that 6 and 7 have a wider platform - SCOR 44 and Wilson C300 9 iron are now in the bag for Friday’s round, G30 8-6. We shall see.

This is what he wants. I honestly launch the G 30 short irons higher than I’d like. I wonder how these two will perform. They have until New Years.

Amazing weather today for northwest Ohio - 62*, sunny and a nice breeze from the south. Our course is closed but the driving range at Thunderbird in Huron was open so off I ran with a few clubs to hit the biggest bucket they had. Unfortunately couldn't play 18 because we have company coming this aft.  My drives were nice and straight - so I guess I finally got that Epic dialed in. However my swing speed is off by about 6-7 mph so I wasn't getting the distance I should (the smash factor was still in the high 1.40's). Have I told you how much I like (and use) my SC200 LM?

Anyways, looks like its back to the gym for that core strength training.

I worked on my lag putting yesterday. Hit countless putts from 30-40-50 feet trying to work on speed and have them stop within a 6 foot circle around the hole.

Then went to the practice area and hit 3 balls to many different hole locations and from different lies. Here's the different part, I hit one ball each with my wedge, an 8i, and a 5i. Solely working on feel.

Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy mobile app

When I’m practicing lag putting I like to be inside of 3 feet. I actually take a hula hoop with me and place it over the hole so the cup is centered. Then I take a piece of thread (usually green) around the inside of the hula hoop then remove hula hoop.
While I’m practicing my “lag putts” I cannot see the thread this forces me to still attempt to make these lag putts. A lot of people focus so hard on the lag they quit worrying about trying to make it, but at the end of the day a great lag is still a 2 putt. In order for me to move on to next rarer I need to make 12 in a row inside the thread. It’s nerve racking especially when you get to the 10th putt.
I’ll explain more of this in my actual post here if you’re interested.

Played a putting game with my two boys after taking them to the range. We each take turns picking a hole and where to hit from. Lowest strokes wins. Highlight of the day, my 6 year old made about a 30-35 foot bomb.

Reading many of these practice rounds of all of you I can’t help, but notice a lot of people just practice by hitting so many balls with all their clubs. Which if you ask me is a great way to practice feel, distance, and overall outcome.

Does anyone practice while under pressure? I.E. I will take a 5i and have to hit (in order) 3 draws within 10’ of 200 marker followed by 3 fades within 10’ of same marker. If at any point I miss I have to go back to the beginning. Even if I managed to hit all 3 draws and I missed a fade I still have to go back and repeat the draws. With my local ranges it’s easy to split the fairway into 1/2 or 1/4 the size. I must keep all balls inside this line so that only allows for a 3’-5’ draw/fade I have noticed this has greatly improved my accuracy, but it also is a huuuge help during high pressure situations in tournaments or matches.
Putting(my absolute favorite) I used to take x amount of putts from 3’-12’ then I’d call it a day. Now that has changed significantly. Start off by making a line on the ball and making sure I’m rolling that putt end over end so that line doesn’t wiggle. While I’m doing this there is no target no speed just ensuring my stroke is correct. Then I go straight to 4’ and make 12 in a row. If I miss at 11. Starting all over. After I go to 12’ and must make 12 in a row again. And finish with 12 from 7’
Chipping I am a huge fan of the bump and run personally with an 8i so I pick a 1’ circle that I aim to (not as a finish, but as the initial landing zone) I have to hit 12 in a row to hat spot and I do not make much concern for where they finish. That is next. So now that I have my 1’ circle it’s now time for me to hit the hula hoop circle that is by the hole. The trick here is now I have to hit 12 shots in a row that hit the 1’ circle then must come to a stop within the hula hoop.
I also practice wedge shots now this varies from course to course, however I try to do this with tough thin lies or deep rough lies. 12 on a row are played inside the hula hoop.
Hope this helps and sorry there is so much to read here.
