What/How Did You Practice Today?

Recommended Posts

Spent more than an hour trying to hone in a pitching technique. I've had great success with Utley's chipping techniques, but I've been struggling to find a good rhythm with his pitching technique (basically use the bounce effectively).

Feeling quite a bit better after the session, hit a lot of shots with both my 54 and 60 degree wedges. Tried to work in a bunch of tight lies. With the 60, especially, it takes quite a bit of speed to send the ball more than 10-15 yards. It's a bit unnerving because it feels like an out of control skull is just around the corner.

Nice!!  It helps to let gravity do most of the work on the downswing.

Did a gap testing session on the MGS launch monitor.  Wasn't the best ball striking day but it was nice to finally get some distances written down.   Also worked with a driver shaft I picked up relatively inexpensively....proforce V2.    Was able to be aggressive with the shaft,  but had the tendency to spin it a bit too much; guess I will keep looking.  Today's carry numbers

I wasn't paying attention to the numbers when  I was swingin and really didn't look at them in detail until I got home last night.  I was surprised that the gaping was pretty good.  Obviously that was a single session and not anything long term like an Arccos /Gamegolf   I am going to print  the chart and start using it on the course to see how well I do; and make some adjustments as I see real execution;   hoping to get myself back down to a 4 or less.   Been working hard on short game technique and have started to work on AoA which is giving me better contact and launch angles.

I used Utley's approach a long time ago.   Took a lesson a month or so ago and we talked some about Ridyard and Jeff Pierce.  Hard to get specifics from Ridyard's videos,  but I found a deal on Course Kings; ad that popped up on some social media platform, where I got a free series of videos with Jeff Pierce explaining his technique.  Pretty straight forward and it explains how to rotate the arms to effectively use the bounce.   Here is a short instagram post that he discusses what I am talking about:

I spent the last hour hitting balls into my net trying to incorporate single plane techniques into my swing. I think the single plane thing may work for me, but obviously it is going to take a lot of work to get it down. Need to get to the range and see what my actual ball flight looks like. It surely can't be any worse than hooking and slicing everything.

Played 18 today and messed around with the loft&spin settings on my old M1 to see if I had it right. Been playing it 9.5 high spin. Tried it at 10.2 and 10.9 but nope, too high, they ballooned a bit. Even 10.2 low spin (how i used to play it) though it didn’t balloon snd launched okay it just felt dead. So went back to the way it was. Gotta check it every once in a while!

Hit a large bucket with the new XRs. I definitely need to swap out the grips, I just do not like wrap-style.

On the good side, these seem to take far less of a divot than my D300s or D200s, and feel like they glide through more than dig which is nice. They're also a 1/2" shorter, so I need to get adjusted to that. I hit more than a few thin, whereas fats are usually my main miss.

My arm felt really good after yesterday’s range time so I figured I’d head back today for a bucket.

It was like I’d never hit a ball before. Pure garbage that just got worse the more I tried to relax and go easy.

Tomorrow’s another day.

I have been working through the 9 hole putting assessment in the book "Better Faster: The Modern Golfer's Blueprint for Getting More from Less" recently to compare different putters and really help ingrain what I learned from a recent Aimpoint clinic. Before the assessment I usually putt a few balls to the fringe to get a bit of feel for distance and then make a couple straight 4-6 footers to make sure my aim is in the ballpark.

I, like many of you on here I'm sure, get several different golf-related emails every day; for me, that includes the short video tip of the day from Revolution Golf. Usually I watch them .. and then promptly delete and forget about them .. but the other day was one from Chris Como about hitting better approach shots.

I'm not suggesting everyone go look at this, but it caught my interest and actually seemed pertinent to me - so I went and tried it out in the garage (have a hitting mat and net).

And it did seem to help me with making more solid contact on irons and wedges.

I _think_ (but yeah may be totally off course here .. have to go see my instructor again soon) the overall goal of it is to maintain your posture, or spine angle, better .. and longer .. through the downswing and into the follow-through - definitely something I could do better at!

Today I went to a Par 3 and tried to apply it, and felt like I had some (not complete, but some) success with it. Didn't hit every green but played two balls and most were reasonably close. Yea!

I did see that video/instruction also and thought it was pretty good. I did save it.
There was another on swing plane a couple days ago that really resonated with me as I have problems with Tempo/Swing Plane.

Had my first range session experimenting with the single plane swing. It was kind of hit or miss, lots of work to do to get it to become habit, but when I hit it right the ball went high and straight. Also hit 3 or 4 of my longest, straightest drives yet. A lot of inconsistency to start with, but some very well hit shots gives me hope for this swing change. Gotta watch some more videos and work on drills now.

Better day today. Driver was probably as good as I've ever hit - 5 balls just hit on a rope.

Wedges and irons through 8i were fine. 7i & 6i were erratic, which has been plaguing me lately. Have to continue to work on that.

I also need to really start mixing things up. I spend too much time hitting the same club instead of playing a simulated round. I find that when I do that, everything is so much better.

Back to the basics today. After shooting 79 two weeks ago, I've had a couple awful rounds spraying the ball all over the place.

Worked on my takeaway and getting the shaft at a better position at P2. Drills courtesy Monte Scheinblum's Efficient Swing series.

I took the day to work slowly with the three wedges.

After physical warm-ups, I got ready by some short gentle swings using my 50º with my feet together.  This allowed me to concentrate a bit more on the rest of the swing motion.  When the time came to begin the smacking of the spheres, I was nice and loose.

All the wedges performed well.  I may not have gotten all the distance expected, but they were close.  Direction was better, even though I still tend to finish a bit to the right.

For the longer wedge shots, using my 50º, I was keeping it well into the 100 yard target areas.  I made sure to keep my swing active yet not over powering as to loose a lot in total.  I then tried a few gentler partial swing for shots between 50 and75 yards. Mostly good though I did hit a very ugly thin shot.

54º was good, though I still "over ran" a few beyond where I hoped they would have stopped.

60º was the best overall as to what I tried to do.

I am saving the sand trap shots for this weekend when slightly cooler weather will be upon us.

Quoting my own post, but very happy to report day two of back to basics was a huge success. Started with small takeaway only swings in the pitching area like my posted picture, but then grabbed half a basket and headed to the range.

This summer I've been going back and forth between hitting the ball great and then suddenly losing a club or more of distance (and way less club head speed based on my Swing Caddie). I am now certain my takeaway getting sloppy was the problem. Focused on getting a good takeaway and I added a good 10-15 yards to my irons and wedges. I was happy to see my 7 iron work up to the low 90s. That's a great sign that I'm doing things well in the takeaway.

I'm running out of practice time before the range closes for the year, but together with the takeaway, I also need to focus on getting more consistent pressure shifts in the swing. Every few swings I get it right, but if I want to strike the ball better consistently that's an area of focus for me going forward.

I don’t know why I bother to practice - I knew I had figured out what I was doing wrong earlier this week.

Went to the range, warmed up, first shot was a 9 iron just short of the tree that I was aiming it - it was 155 so I knew I wouldn’t reach it - after hitting 9/10 9 irons that would have been on the green - a few close, I pulled 7 iron and brought out the Swing Caddie - picked a different target - a flag off in the distance that was 25 yards right of the tree - I hit all 5 of those straight (no fade or draw) between 155 and 159.

Pulled 7 wood - same flag - 5 balls - between 194-205 all high and straight - one a tad too far right. Driver 9/10 great - everyone over 130 ball speed - Several over 135 - right around 240 total - flying past the flag that was 217 (remember these were range balls so I’d get a bit more speed and distance with my gamers.

Ended up with a series of wedges to differing distances and a perfect 8 iron right to the base of that tree at 155.

Also my teacher who was there gave me a drill to help improve swing efficiency a bit more (he was between lessons - he said I’m swinging it well enough to move onto more advanced stuff)

Now I need to get this to the course -thats been up and down for me of late.

Took out a jumbo bucket, and boy did it feel great. Had enough to get a little partial swing work in, going for the 100yd mark with a few different clubs (thanks for the suggestion), then took some time going from a "tee shot" to an "approach", filtering through all the clubs I typically take off the tee and then getting in all my irons and wedges from there too.

Also, had a bit of an epiphany. I've heard plenty of times that your "full swing" should really be ~85% or something like that. I've always tried to apply that by slowing my swing down a hair, and haven't really had much improvement in consistency. However, today I tried slightly shortening my backswing, and it was going absolutely great. Didn't feel like I had to try slowing my swing down, but it also kept me from feeling like I was swinging out of my shoes. And really consistent strikes! And on top of it all, not even enough change in distance to notice!

Sometimes it amazes me that not everyone is hooked on golf.

Hit about 60 balls before playing 9. Trying to focus on staying down through the swing and not letting my arms get all wonky on the back and through swing.

Anyone else ever have a day like this?

I had a limited time to work as I was on my way to an appointment.  Plan was to hit 15,  or, even a few more, whacks with the mighty driver before meeting my doctor for a fairly short bit of follow-up. My range allows you to use a pre-purchased card to activate the ball set up about 90 minutes before they open.  So it was time to go.

I felt forced to leave, as I could not put up with a loud, irreverent and even profoundly profane group of young gentlemen (using the term quite loosely) of, I surmised, high school age, who decided to utilize far too much foul language and invectives.

I was fairly sure of their age, as I taught HS for 47 years. They actually were screwing around in the parking lot and did not even pretend to practice; I suspect they did not have the card which allows the machines to work in the hour and a half before the range opens. Total time they were driving through the lot was perhaps 10 minutes tops.

After I think I hit 7 or 8 shots or so,  it became clear it was time to leave, as I could not concentrate at all. I was not even sure they fully saw me.

So it was a morning dealing with "those types".  Ok, I am an old geezer, but it was not fun.

I do not blame the course as it was the actions of some, shall we say, idiots.

As I was packing up and changing my shoes, they left.  By then time was a factor for me.

I am just venting as I have been substituting for 6th grade classes this week and the behavior level I saw this week was about the same level. Perhaps the golf gods found a off the wall way to tell me that I need to take a deep breath, relax, and have a focused practice tomorrow.

Thus ends the sermon from your favorite curmudgeon!

Went to the driving range to continue working on getting the right elbow in-place, and took my first swings with the new Flash SZ.
I then spent 30 minutes on the putting green using a new hand placement, and it seemed to work well.

Worked on grip, tempo, sequencing, lag, release, alignment. Just hitting 60-70 yard wedges. Mostly focused on using a half or 2/3 backswing and a very full follow through, which when put together help you to really delay your release so you get that sidearm skipping stone throw feeling. When I get it right it feels like Freddy Couples looks, like I’m just throwing the club to the target and oh there the ball goes too!
