What/How Did You Practice Today?

null

Recommended Posts

The day I hoped for yesterday.

Early AM to get in 25 driver drives.

Average speed was some of my best, 110

Without adding extra yardage for the stiff range balls, I was about 205.

No arm of hand tension, good turning of hips and follow through.

No fat or thin shots,  a few pushes, but nothing gawd awful.

Now to figure out how to take all this off the range so I can win friends and influence people.

9 ball test with 3 trajectories and shapes... Nailed it with the 7 iron and then decided to try it with a 2H which didn't work nearly as well.

Went to the driving range to continue working on getting the right elbow in-place, and took my first swings with the new Flash SZ.
I then spent 30 minutes on the putting green using a new hand placement, and it seemed to work well.

What are you working on? Just curious. I recently went left hand low to take some of the action out of my wrists and it seems to be working really good. Best of luck to you!

Worked on the 5 iron low punch. Need that to get out of the trees. Yesterday at the range I was either shanking or topping it. In the backyard, with plastic balls, concentrated on rotating with the shoulders and not takeaway with the hands. Much better results. Ready for my golf trip now

My club has the best practice facility - which my friend Dennis and I hit today - we then played 2,3,8,18 in - I was even.

It also has a great 19th hole - 8 dollar martini’s with this view. I hit it very well on the range and for those 4 holes.

I must be doing something right.

20 dutiful driver events were such that , I almost dare say, I may know what I a doing; at least, for thisweek I do.

It is amazing how much not forcing a club and not over-swinging often gets me far better results.  My speeds today were some f the best in terms of consisItency. Distance was solid, 200+ yards with god following role.

I had only one push right.  I was a but upset at first, but then came to understand, if that were a drive at the course scheduled next, it would have probably ended up in the second cut of rough at worst! Heck, I have seen many a pro do that as well.

Except for that miscreant whack, I somehow got, primarily, a nice draw.

Now, I cannot state all was glorious today. While my 6i was good with only one rather than shot, my 3h was lacking both loft and distance. I need to spend either time mastering my 3h, or seriously take a look the value of this particular club. (My coach had suggested that the Karsten 3hdesign might be the reason as it does not, in most respects, match design of my other bride. When we next meet, I will try out a 3h at the G400 line)

I took my 58 degree wedge and worked on all things 80 yards and in this morning. This included 30 and 50 yards pitches from fairway lies, a variety of lies from the rough, a couple of dozen trap shots, a number of full shots from fairway length grass and two levels of rough.

I would have preferred the practice session to be a bit more random but it was great work never the less. Having two pins on the green meant that I alternated lengths on the pitch and trap shots.

The only thing that gave me real trouble were bare lies in the rough.

Spent a very productive lunch hour in the short game area today. Worked mostly on two things - high soft pitches with Utley's technique and then a bunch of 1/4-1/2 normal wedge swings focusing on setup, takeaway and pressure shift.

(All of this pitching practice paid off yesterday. I stuck a high, soft wedge from 70-ish yards out in thick rough to three feet. Only birdie of the day.)

I mentioned in my last few “How’d you play?” posts that I’ve added more secondary axis tilt at address. This has helped me tremendously because it helps shallow out my swing and gives my arms more room to swing around my body instead of over it. I shot "smooth" scores of 82 and 80 over the weekend after a poor 91 two weekends ago, and I feel like the tilt made all of the difference.

My right shoulder naturally falls down and inward, and it has been made worse with using a computer mouse for the past decade. This caused me a lot of grief the past few weeks because, as they say, “feel isn’t real.”

This picture is from my range session last Friday, when I had an awful time all-around. It’s a 7-iron. Notice how my spine is straight up and down at address. To me, this felt like I had plenty of secondary tilt as my right shoulder dropped down and in.

snapshot_20190909_165849.thumb.jpg.e10898ff87b2123a4fef730a02af20d5.jpg

I’m now consciously evaluating tilt at address and it is working wonders. Combined today with a focus on good pressure and hip movement in the backswing, I flew a bunch of 1/2 wedges within a yard of my target. Great feeling.

A lot of my issues really can be traced back to poor setup, so I need to ingrain all of these checks into my routine. Setup, grip and alignment are the easiest things to change in my swing since I actually have full control over them!

As promised (to my self at lest) it was a fairly intimate day between me and my 3h.

I was very much able to make good full contact, and, I was able to get decent distance only about 10 yards off expected.  However, good loft was almost not appearing as it should.  Most barely rose 8-10' above the planet.

I made almost religious use of my alignment rods to make sure the position of the feet and then the angle of the club was proper for the club at address.  I made a slight adjustment so that my grip was a bit more strong to keep it that way.

Again, solid contact but no great loft. (10' would have been a better than average loft.)

As I stated, this hybrid is not the same design as my other, more reliable, 4h and 5h. The reality is this one does not have the dragonfly design normally found in Pings and the face is not made of the same resilient materials.

SO tomorrow, I will be looking at a replacement to try out. Great thing about this range is that one is allowed to test any club in the store.  I will look at the 3h's in stock from new G400 and G410 as well as some older models, if they are in the used club section.  I am simply looking to find a more consistent club to save one or maybe two strokes a game on the longer courses I play.

I love a quiet range in the morning. IMG_5440.JPG

I took a week off of practicing to clear my head and let my arm heal up. I did chip and putt with my son, but today was my first time hitting full shots in a week.

It started out dreadfully. Again. Worm burners galore. After 15 shots or so I walked away, came back and took a whole bunch of easy practice swings... and realized I was bottoming out way in front of where the ball was. It had gradually been creeping backwards. I put the ball off of the logo on my shirt, and it was like night and day.

Sometimes it’s the easiest most basic things that can screw me up. I left the range feeling so much better. Arm’s doing good too.

Born on the same day as Arnie, just 47 years apart, I finally had my first one on one lesson with a pro after 35 years of playing as a birthday gift from my wife.

The pro just give me a few little things to work on and I was happy with just having a pro look over my swing and make sure I wasn’t developing any bad habits. I took the ‘58 Dynapowered’s to my lesson (the clubs Arnie used to win at Augusta in 1958) and the pro loved them. He was genuinely shocked I was bagging and hitting a 2-iron. He got me not coming so far inside and shorten my backswing a bit, definitely helped get better contact on the long irons.

Tonight I’m going to watch the Arnie documentary and have a drink to The King.

Another day of working with all 3 of my hybrids.

4h and 5h were spectacular and predictable with range, direction and loft.  My coach was very pleased with all of the aspects of the play with all the work on those two.

The 3h was another beast.  He videoed my work and found nothing really off. Perhaps a little of this and that would make a difference. Perhaps.

The bottom line is that a 3h is the most difficult to hit of the hybrids, at least the hybrids in my bag. And, I am not losing enough yardage between my 4h and the 3h, if a goes well.  Rather than looking for a 3h to match the other hybrids in my bag, I would be better to get a 7 wood as the basic replacement.

Result, tomorrow will be to put the 3h into a suspended from  my bag status and return the 7i/w that I have. Or to look for a true 7 metal.

He also suggested I experiment with various 1/2 and 3/4 swings with the 4h.  The goal, he said was 2-3 strokes/round on longer holes.

So I will go this way for now.

Onward, upward, Excelsior!

Played 9 on the muni par 3. 2 balls on each hole - 1 over and 2 over respectively - I don’t use a tee - just drop the ball somewhere behind the tee blocks and hit it - sometimes I choose rough - sometimes uneven lies

Great practice - I think there was only one other group out - about 2 holes ahead of me.

Rather than looking for a 3h to match the other hybrids in my bag, I would be better to get a 7 wood as the basic replacement

I'm NOT a pro but was going to suggest that - bench the 3H and test out a wood. One thing I've learned, with help through these forums, is not to play the club you think you "should" but to play a club that gives you confidence and helps you get the results you want...

Good luck!!!

I hit lots of balls at targets that were 102, 82, 69, 181, 189 and 236.

As you can see they were in different directions.

IMG_1303.JPG

Also hit some 7 irons at the 181 which I couldn’t reach. I’m happy to report that I could reach the 236 with driver - pretty close to on the fly. I was able to hit it to and past the 82 with 58 or to the 69 on alternate shots with ease.

Also I could hit 52 to the 102 or the 82.

Both very good signs.

Actually had a reasonably productive range session.

Worked a lot with the driver - which has pretty much not been in play this season - trying to come in to the ball a little flatter and a little more from the inside. Have to be careful not to overdo it as now a big miss is way left, vs the prior high slicing right that has plagued me... But was able to land most shots in, or on the edge of, the "fairway".

Alternated drivers with a wedge, just trying to keep a smooth tempo on each type of swing. Mixed in a few short or mid irons, too .. eg. simulated approach shots.

Then hit a few 4Ws off the mat, again trying to come in a little flatter and a little more from the inside .. while trying to make sure I was hitting "through" the ball, ie. hit the imaginary ball right in front of the real ball (Thanks, @chisag!). Did ok with those.

Then some random target practice, and then three different wedges at the same target (I don't really like full swings with my 58, my most lofted club); and finished working on knock-down / punch-out type shots with a few different clubs - this is a shot that, well, I seem to need (too often..!) to hit more reliably.

Feeling ready for the course this weekend!

Very nice session!!  I particularly like the "Alternated drivers with a wedge..."  Trying to emulate how the pros' play... great idea!!!   😂

Ummm, yeah.. how the pros play.. yeah, that's the ticket! 🤣

But thx - it did help me work on what should not be a different rhythm for each type of swing, but to try and swing with a steadier tempo!

Tempo is huge - we have an 80 year old former tour pro on our staff - it’s all he works on - he thinks SuperSpeed is nuts.

I don’t think it’s nuts, it works but tempo is huge too. The back and forth between driver and wedge is a way to hone that.

Good luck

I spent half an hour putting on two of our three practice greens - two different grasses, two different green speeds - one is for the public course the other for Bayou - the guys on the public one were talking about how fast it was - they have no idea. :)

The replacement of my 3h with my 7i/w is starting hit its stride.

I was getting a nice, for now, 85-90 speed with, loft solid at, I would surmise, 15' - 20' (when it is working well). Direction was good enough to finally be something not to worry about this morning.

As to my re-gripped clubs, they are feeling good enough that the re-grip seems almost a non-issue.  I have a feel of more control with no real movement in the hands.  I had been feeling some significant shift in my older grips.  I do not need to hold on quite as hard to keep the shift/spinning in the hands from happening.  I will re-grip the 9i, 5h and driver tomorrow. The following week will be the wedges.

The practice today was in short, results I expected (hoped for), minimal tension in hands and swings. I left, in a quest to obtain more coffee, a fairly happy golfer.

Never heard of the 2 greens with different grass and green speed. Interesting, must confuse players sometimes.
