You would not like my teacher

He doesn’t believe it’s possible to stand too close to the ball. 🙂

I just never realized how much I hugged my arms in toward my body instead of letting them hang freely. Standing a little further away lets my arms hang naturally now at around 5 o'clock when viewed from behind, which seems to be letting me go back more on plane and not inside like I did before.

I have longer than average arms for my height, so I think this contributes to it.

Of course, this has only been validated with foam balls in the backyard. Hoping to get back to the heated range tomorrow.

I had an instructor a while back who was always preaching to me about keeping ball closer. Sometimes it’s worked, sometimes no.

Went to the range today, and it started out badly. I was hitting shanks and spending more time hitting toward the heel than i care to do. After some work on keeping my right elbow from flying out on me, I started to see some improvement.

After straightening that out, probably 3/4 of my bucket, I started focusing on the thought of taking my left shoulder down toward the ball then up through on my follow through. I'm not the best at explaining swing thoughts, but that idea in my head as I was hitting had me hitting longer, straighter shots with my irons. I got this tidbit of a thought at the 4:20 mark of this video by Mark Crossfield:

I'm going to spend some time in my yard trying to incorporate this move into my swing and see how it helps. I've always had a habit of trying to push through the ball with my right side and I'm wondering if this might help to keep me from hanging back on my right side.

One of these days I'm going to take lessons and actually learn how to play this game.

I hit far too many balls at the heated range this morning, but I can confirm I was too close before. Now, the caveat to that is that it is definitely possible to be too far from the ball also. I had quite a few close to the toe while I figured out exactly how far I should be.

I ended up finding a distance where my arms were hanging freely at address, but also that I felt pressure on both the balls and heels of my feet, with a bit more pressure on the heels. The little bit of extra pressure on my heels helps me get a nice turn of my lower body.

My playing buddies tell me that my stance is too narrow.  I tell them that it is easier for me to rotate my hips with the narrow stance.  I finally gave in and began to practice widening my stance while playing.  I've gained distance and starting to gain more control as I adjust back to the wider stance.  I feel that the last few weeks my game has been the most consistent it has been in awhile and my confidence is going up and my handicap will fall.

I do lose more balls left with the wider stance so Im still working the kinks out on that part, but loving the added yardage and for the most part more control.

Playing 18 on my Optishot simulator setup. It doesn't do great with woods so i just use irons off the tee. Good to just swing. Need to make sure I do this 1-2 times a week throughout winter. 1573781220504~3.jpeg

Went to the range today to get in some work with my irons and to spend time practicing my short game. I haven't been able to play in over a month, but have been trying to take advantage of my range pass to keep sharp. I have a tentative round next weekend with a couple of buddies, and one of them can absolutely blow by me off the tee. His short game isn't as good, so I figure an advantage in that part of the game can't do anything but help me.

I had pretty good results results on the range, I'm starting to see more of a high, piercing ball flight compared to my stock shot that looks like an arch. It's hard to explain, but I've always felt my shot takes the flight pattern of a basketball leaving the hand of a player shooting beyond the three point line. I'm still working on a better rotation with the shoulders on the follow through and not feeling like I'm stopping it early.

My major regret is the fact they have closed the grass part of the range and have brought out the mats. I hate mats...they have a tendency to mask too many problems with contact. Accuracy was better than normal, though with fewer shots going off course. Still need to work on contact.

20191116_135951-01.jpeg

After the range, I moved to the chipping green and worked on better rotation and not an all arm swing. Spent about half an hour there before moving on the the putting green.

Started there working on distance control, and boy was the green fast! Arccos shows that my average distance on all approach shots to be 25 feet, so then I started working from that distance and tried not to three putt from three.

Finally, I went just off the green to work on improving my chip and down percentage that is currently sitting at 10.3 percent. I would try to chip three balls and then try to one putt from there.
20191116_152633-01.jpeg

(Results were not too good)

Now I know why I average 39 putts a round.

Large bucket at the heated range again this morning. Not as great as last week. Falling into old habits again. A little too inside on the takeaway and not enough turn into my right hip on the backswing. Did find a few that were just right and liked the results. Just a matter of consistency. My miss right now is off the toe when I get too steep in the downswing.

Club head speed continues to impress thanks to Fit For Golf. It was very cold this morning (high 20s, heated stall probably in the upper 40s), and right out of the gate with no real warm up I was seeing some very positive speed results. Now, I just need to get more of the center of the face to get my ball speeds up.

I also spent a good 15 minutes on the indoor practice "green," which although quite large has some ridiculous undulations and is about as hard as putting on concrete. The positive I'm taking away is that my impact when putting has gotten a whole lot more consistent since fixing my stance and adding a bit of forward shaft line. I think next year could be a much better year for the putter!

Continuing to work on the drills from my lessons a few Sundays ago. A better takeaway should help transform the rest of my swing and be easier on my body. It's amazing how simple some things can be....and how our bodies want to go back to what's familiar, yet not ideal for great performance and scores.

I didn't practice today.

Posting season is over.  One of my takeaways from the year is that I have been practicing too much... IF I want to be relevant in any scramble tournaments.  Why is that, you say?

Here's my rationale.  I am not a long hitter of the golf ball.  At 72 I've lost distance over the past 10 years (probably longer I don't remember that long ago!), although I'm working on trying to get some of that back.  As a result I have to rely on straight hitting and a decent short game to compensate for not hitting many greens.  With lots of practice I have done pretty well staying a single digit from our tees at 6100y.  Yes, I could move up to the senior tees, but they are at 5400y which I consider too short.  The Men's Club allows players to play from the senior tees when the age plus their handicap equals 90 or more.  I'm not there yet.  The past several years I have only been using my index as a measure of how well I'm playing week-to-week.

This past weekend I played in a charity scramble... lots of fun, but no one wants a short-hitting single digit player in a scramble, especially when each player must hit 3 drives.  The only way I'm a single digit is because of my short game.  I'm to the point right now where keeping a handicap is irrelevant since I don't play in tournaments except a few scrambles for charities I support.  If I don't post scores for a handicap, I don't need to practice my short game any more... just go play.  On days when my short game sucks, I figure I would be a 16 handicap.  With that 16, our team handicap last Saturday would put us in the mix; probably not at the top, but not near the bottom either.

Have I been working too hard on my short game?  Maybe.  I have always tried to perform the best I can with what I've got, but maybe I don't need to do that anymore.  Just play and have fun, and I can still track my scores, just not in a handicap format.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I was supposed to play this afternoon when 2 things got in the way - licensing board showed up at school and then one of our kids had a seizure.

By 2 we had passed our inspection and I had learned the kid was, okay, although this will be life changing for him.

Too late to play I hit the range and decided to hit 3 balls with every club in the bag. (Okay I hit more drivers, 52 degree wedges and putters than that)

According to ARCOSS I’m a plus handicap with driver - I don’t buy that - I’m no where near long enough (221 avg). But I’m extremely accurate and consistent for certain. I picked an exceedingly narrow “fairway” to aim 3 wood and driver towards. 2/3 with 3 wood, all 10 drivers in the “fairway.”

The winner of club of the day though was 5 wood. All three were roped and two of them were higher than I ever imagined that I could hit a club with so little loft. All were over 200 on Voice Caddie

Plsyrd 9 to a +4.  Had a 3 putt and missed 2 short par putts. Very bumpy greens sfter some rain and frost delay, but shoukd had made them anyways.

Git lucky on #9 which is my worst hole on the course. Smoked a drive dead center fairway which left me 126 to a center stick. So tough for me to get after this stick and  I told my playing partner  that I wil hit the green but spin it back off the slope to the fringe. Just what I did. Left uphill putt 12 feet short but made the long par putt.  All my playing partners have no issue with this hole but they are low ball run the ball up players.

On Tuesday I changed out my bag... but left in my driver, wedges and putter.  I went to the garage and added my old TaylorMade RBZ hybrids and my Ping i20 irons.  It's been years since I've hit them.  I hit balls on the range on Tuesday and Wednesday just to get used to them again.  I hit the i20's pretty well; tended to hook the ball but better now.

Beautiful sunny day today in eastern Washington, but a chilly 44º.  My wife and I played a practice 9-holes, and we walked.  One of the gals who works in the pro shop and is a local community college golfer joined us.  My first practice round with this bag.  The result?  Two birdies, one bogey and one double (poor drive).  My best front nine round this year!!

Got a little indoor practice in with my new Bobby Grace 6330 putter.  Wanted to see how well I could start the ball online so I rolled balls through a gate.    As expected,  my miss was occasionally right unlike my normal left miss.   Attempted to speed up the rotation a bit so I pulled the sole weights which dropped headweight from 350 to about 324.  Seemed to get the ball to start more online.   Tried a single weight in toe and heel positions which move the ball a bit right again.   Going to see if I can find a set of the light (6gr aluminum) weights.  Could buy from grace but I want to see if I can find a used set instead of paying $55 for new ones.    Going to be fun experimenting to see how weight changes impact my stroke.

The last couple  months or so Ive working off and on wirh widening my stance. Kept it narrow as it helped me rotate,  but at times I felt off balance. Buddies encouraged me to work on  it so I have and the results have been great.

As Ive gotten used to it I have better balance, a better right leg pivot and a firmer left leg which has resulted in more power. I think Ive easily gained a club and I dont remember my iron play ever being better.  Still some work to do but very excited on what this migt hold.

I got to the range this morning to work on what my coach gave me during my lesson yesterday. Spent a large bucket practicing a combination of 1/2, 3/4 and full swings with my new grip and pressure shift.

Was a great bucket! I lost a little club head speed because I was more focused on getting the grip and shift right, but I didn't really lose any distance at all. By far the most shots hit out of the center of the face in my life, and I bet I'll have gained at least a club's length once I start ramping the speed back up.

Amazing how two small changes can have such a huge impact on the swing!

120 range balls...
- start with 8 iron stepping lead foot back to trail foot on backswing and then forward to address location on front swing the ingrain feel of good weight shift
- work on driver face angle - hit 4 hooks, then 4 slices, both to exaggerate feel; then 4 relatively straight balls
- iron club path - hit minimum 7/10 ball on toe side (successful), then heel side (fail), then center third of club face (face colored with marker to show impact location)
- mixing in occasional 30 yard chips with LW and hitting a fade with driver to an imaginary fairway between the iron shots
- hit the same iron 3 distances: full, 3/4, and half swing
- finished by playing imaginary 9 holes at my home course with tee shots, approaches, and chips if I would have missed the imaginary green
- cool down hitting 80-100 yards wedges and the odd 20-40 yard chip

All shots were hit slowly working on alignment, spine tilt away from target, and routine (looking at target and back to ball while counting 1-2 to initiate back swing).

Working with the driver, primarily, slow practice in hitting 25 shots, I concentrated on full follow through to avoid sending them off to the left.

Fair success. with minimal loss of yardage.

Will have a full set run through early tomorrow if rains hold!

Hit 50 balls after work. Trying to ingrain my new 2/3 swing. Also worked on @chisag 's "Swing every iron like a wedge" theory. 6 iron was much better when I swung it like an easy wedge. Distance, accuracy and ball flight were so much better.

Now I need to take it onto the course.

Went to the range today to focus mainly on irons and wedges. With the irons I was focusing again on shoulder turn on the follow through, I tend to slack off on it after contact and also took some advice from@pulledabill and widened my stance slightly. Like him, I've always had a more narrow stance. Results were good! My contact still wasn't perfect, but I'm starting to see a tighter grouping where my ball hires the face.

9 iron

20191129_150013-01.jpeg

Mostly focused a little low and near the center. I did have one that got out on the toe, but for six shots I'm really happy.

7 iron

20191129_150704-01.jpeg

I was seeing a little more middle and in toward the heel. Contact was also a bit higher on the face.

It's starting to get there!

The wedges, I was working on distance control, picking out targets and seeing where the positions in my backswing would go. I now know for 30 yards 8 o'clock, and 50 yards 9 o'clock.

I took that information to the chipping green where I saw consistent performances from those positions. Except when I chunked them .

Finished the day off on the putting green where I worked on distance control. I was chipping balls up and trying to not three putt from there.

Putting Practice.   I have been working with my new Bobby Grace 6330 putter to get used to the feel.   Gamed it last weekend with good results so I have been practicing the gate drill this week.   Been rolling 100 putts through a gate; first 10 are through a 1* game and the last 90 are through a .5* gate.  Goal is to get 90 through without hitting a side of the gate.  Been averaging between 88-92 through.  Misses have been slightly right.

One of the reasons I liked and purchased this putter was the adjustable weights.  Like Golfspy_MPR who has been doing putter testing,  I wanted to see how weight would impact startline and feel.    Default configuration is the stock 13gr weights making the headweight 350gr.   Very toe down putter so the face stays a little bit open to the path on the forward stroke which would account for the right miss.  Since the weights are removable i pulled the weights to see how I putted.  As I had hoped the lower weight helped the face close a touch faster moving the ball a bit to the left.   I put one of the 13gr weights in the heel of the putter and the results were still good. Have basically convinced myself that I should order the 6gr weights.

Approximately 25 gr is a lot of weight be be moving around and we are really talking small degrees of movement of the ball.  Obviously with a .5* tolerance going from nicking the right side of the gate to missing the gate isn't very much,  but as we move to 10,' 20', or longer putts that small tolerance helps tighten the distribution circle.

I hit far too many balls this morning at the range, really should have taken more half swings to ingrain the changes my coach is wanting, but I really wanted to see how far I could ramp it up.

This is the impact pattern of 10 6-irons. Couple were a touch fat, but overall really pleased with my ball striking today.

Mostly. I added a ton of height when I switched to the C-Taper Lites and slightly weaker lofts on these new irons, but my distance is already better than it ever was this season.

When I get it all put together correctly, I am hitting nice little push draws that end up right on my original target line. My miss right now is a pull draw, I definitely overcooked a few that would have cost me on the course. Just a matter of more practice, I think, because I'm seeing a lot of really great results when I get it right.

Hit the heated bay yesterday for a bucket 'o balls. Mostly just a touch up day, went up through the bag and then spent the rest of the time working on partial wedge shots. Swing actually feels really good for the off-season.

I've got my first lesson coming up in a week, so I'm looking forward to seeing what he says with my swing! 🛠️🐒🔧
