What/How Did You Practice Today?

I really enjoy practicing and can get 'lost' in time and numbers in pursuit of that 'flushed' shot to order.

Large bucket is 100 balls here, except at Colin Montgomeries academy range at Turnberry where they provide a bucket of balls, no number. I counted them (yes I'm sad) and found 24!!

I can do 24 in a warm up ffs!

So our new Super was the number 2 guy at Jupiter Hills. He started at Bayou on the 2nd. I don’t know if you can see how tight that lie is but it’s Tour tight - scary at first tight - I’ve seen greens that are no where near this tight.

Interesting the perceptions at different locations of tight lie. That looks to be sitting nicely to me. Try a links fairway on a warm summers day, now they are tighter than a tight thing on national tight lie day.

I really enjoy this time of year. As a golf club junkie, most wanted testing is just a blast. I am fortunate to live close enough to be a participant. While driver testing was fun, but now I am in the middle of testing my favorite club.... the putter. Seeing some interesting stuff with the blade putters and it is a great practice session. It is nice to have a 20+ foot indoor green to work on soeed control.

Been rolling lots of 5’, 10’, and 20’ putts. Stoke is looking good.

There must be something to this practice thing I hear all about. Not bad for February.

Today I focused on my 6, 7 and 8 irons. These, along with my hybrids, are the clubs I use most in my rounds. I know, that is a major revelation.

Lately, my inconsistent club is the 6. I get good loft, ball speed and distance is not bad; but divergence from the target has widened in both directions. Today I even had a few topped shots. So, tomorrow through Sunday I will be figuring out were I am off in my routine.  I do have a routine that has been very predictable and productive.  Not sure why only the 6i is not doing well.  Maybe, I need to not use it for a few days before a re-examination.  O well, the course I am playing on Friday is playable without touching the 6.

I can go days without hitting my 6i, hit my 7i maybe once a round, and my 8i maybe twice a round.  Other than driver, I mostly hit FW, hybrids and wedges.  So I practice those a lot, but I recently started spending more time with the lower lofted irons because when I need to hit them, I don't hit my best shot.

Prior to getting VERY solid with the hybrids, I used the 6i a lot. Used it a quite often last round due to Ionger first rough on a moist course. So it drew my mind in practice. My hybrids are solid so is my 7i and wedges. We always seem to second guess our play at my level.

Yep no comparison between our tight in Florida and yours - but this is Florida so that lie comes with wet Bermuda - don’t strike it perfectly and the ball goes nowhere.

An article on the distance stuff reminded me of something and I worked it hard practicing today. When LMs first started to really surface 20-25 years ago I was struck by how many longest shots rarely if ever came off of my fastest swings - there was a just right swing speed for me. Weight gain and age caused me to forget that as I kept swinging harder and harder to chase the distance that I lost. SuperSpeed also encourages swinging as fast as possible.

Really other than a couple of drills from my coach I’ve been trying to hit everything as hard as possible for five years. Not today - after some struggles (this is the first week where I’ve hit balls twice this year so I’m not consistent at all) I did one of the drills where I’m hitting 3/4 seven iron cuts - after a bit I was flushing them - it made me think back - took out driver and focused on solid contact - back to 7 iron - then wedge, then5 wood - just alternated clubs and targets focusing on hitting it solid - that’s what I used to do.

Let’s see how it plays on the course Sunday afternoon.

  • 2 weeks later...

Winter is rather limiting on practice in Michigan, especially at home. I've been lucky enough to get two full-swing buckets in each weekend in for most of December, January and February, but I have to drive about an hour round-trip to do so.

I started the offseason really working on putting in my basement, and now have moved on to chipping practice. I have a small hitting mat that simulates plushy fringe pretty well. Additionally, I've started chipping a lot straight off the berber carpet. I figure I'm not going to get a whole lot tighter of a lie than off the carpet.

Since I cant hit the ball due to injury. Ive got out a couple times this week to practice putting.

The 2 times Ive got out,Ive worked on a couple different putting grips. Trying to stabilize/steady myself especially on shorter putts.  I worked on lag putting on waa pleased with the progress.

We hit the 50’s today so it was first range day of the season. It felt great to get out and I took full advantage of making some good swings.

This season I am focusing on early release on iron swings and maintaining good sequences between my torso and arms. While trying to focus on that I felt like my ball striking was as good as I could have hoped for...No bad habits yet...

It was absolutely packed...20-30 minutes waits for stalls to open.

Worked on putting again tonight experimenting with a couple different grips.Think I will go with reverse overlap and see how that goes.

Also played with opening up a bit which is how I putted for years. I think I see the line better especially on breakers.

Trying decide to go more upright or a bit of a crouch. Playing with that a bit until Im cleared to swing the club which Im within a week or two I feel.

Hit some balls today after what has been a brutal stretch - besides my daughter’s health issues I’ve been in the room when a one year old died and sang for a 91 year old whose life is ending at any moment for half an hour before I hit balls. Lent starts tomorrow and I’m giving up drinking alcohol for it.

Hit it beautifully on the range - warm, lots of wind - just alternated between driver, 7 iron, 7 wood and GW - pins were 250, 190, 155, 100. Was spot on them with each club (short on the 250 with driver but past the flags with the other clubs)

Got some clearance to do some chipping and pitch shots so I headed out with my 47 degree wedge and a 60  that I want to put in play.

Not hitting a ball in about 2 months sure showed. Not sure I got but maybe 3 balls out of 15 inside a 10 foot circle from about 30 yards. Had them all over the green. After a few 15 ball rounds, I got things under control and found a touch and things improved. Got a round of physical theraphy tomorrow then another early next week so maybe just maybe I will get cleared to play.

Unless my physical therapist says no, I'm walking 9 after therapy today with a bag full of wedges and a putter working on my pitching and chipping.  Drop a few balls around the green and get busy.  I will pull out everything else to avoid temptation.

I've got several tournaments starting in early April so maybe my short game will save my butt.

Well my physical therapist today was a golfer and he was very confident with my shoulder healing and cleared me to go ahead and hit up to 3/4 shots with short irons.  So I ventured to my club right next door and pulled out everything but 8, 9, putter, and my wedges. Walked 9 and dropped balls from 135 in but really keying on shots with a 60 Im playing around with. Felt good and pain free so it went well minus my swing plane a bit off.

He did say he looks for me to be swinging freely in a week to 10 days.

It sure felt good being back on the course.

If you keep doing that every day, you should notice a much better short game when you play the whole course.

I say this because my friend had an injury (cracked 3 ribs; funny story for another time), so he only carried his wedges and putter.  When he healed up, he had a much better short game... and it stuck with him for years.

Hope the healing goes quick, but don't rush it.

This injury has sidelined since the end of Dec,  1st of Jan.  Zero golf minus a bit of putting until this last week.  Finally got in to physical therapy and am just about healed.  I expect to have a full doctors release next in 10 days or so.  Really hoping this short game practice helps as my swing will not be in order come April 6th for a tourney at the Oregon Golf Club.

I do think I am going to ditch the 60 degree wedge and stick with my 58.  The difference being my 51, 54, and 58 are Vokeys, and the 60 is a Cleveland RX4 I think.  Just not where close to the same feel and as my Vokeys so I see nor advantage playing a 60 with so much different feel than my other wedges.  I think it would hurt me on touch shots around the green.   I will find a used Vokey somewhere to play with.

Hit balls indoors today with my son on GC Quad. Tapping in the new bag seems to be right where I want it for the early season. First round of the season in NY tomorrow at Bethpage.

Went to the range first, hit a large bucket (40-50 balls), fought early extension the last 1/3. Frustrating.
Went to the chipping green and spent almost an hour chipping first, then hit pitches. Figured out the PW is the choice for chipping, and the 54* for pitching.
Then worked on putting speed since our greens are in tough shape.
I gotta keep spending the time in the short game area. This is where I’m going to help myself the most in my quest for all rounds in the 70s.

Went to the chipping green and spent almost an hour chipping first, then hit pitches. Figured out the PW is the choice for chipping, and the 54* for pitching.

I gotta keep spending the time in the short game area. This is where I’m going to help myself the most in my quest for all rounds in the 70s.

I agree; at least for me it is the key to the game.  Either I need to hit 18 greens or I need to figure out my short game woes.   My problem is I can sit on the practice green and hit them well, but when I get the one chance on the course I screw it up.  I think I am failing to commit to the shot and just go right under the ball.   Just need to tell myself to hit the ball because it would be nice to actually go over past the hole instead of way short.

That mental side is a killer. My issue has been not committing to a technique, so I stand over a ball and don’t know how I’m going to swing! I’ve committed to a chipping style, and I’ve committed to a pitching style. Now I just gotta get the reps so I can trust that part and just focus on distance control.
No wonder Pros still don’t break par every time. There are SO many aspects to this game to work on to the detriment of areas not worked on! Sheesh.

Swinging the short irons well and should be playing the whole bag this week if all goes well.  Putter practice is a bit rough as my back is hurting a bit so I can't put a ton of effort in on the green.  Trying to stretch it out on the Swiss ball so it should help.  I've been working a little on chipping with the ball closer to me to get the shaft more upright.  Some days it's the bomb, yesterday it was duffers paradise.  Maybe lack of concentration as I seldom duff around the green.

Was supposed to play a round with Foz and Rob today but had a family situation that I needed my attention and couldn’t play with them.

Once I shook free I was able to get to the range. I’m following the same pattern with SuoerSpeed as last year - for a while I couldn’t hit the ball worth a lick and then bang everything clicked.

Today was the “click” day - I also hit some balls in sequence, driver, walk to my van, walk back (about 280 yards), approach shot, walk to the putting green (140 yards), 2 putts - followed that pattern 4 or 5 times.

Hit my last two shots with driver - here they are on the club face:

That gives you an idea of how well I was swinging - the marks were on top of each other.

Now it’s time to take it to the course

Nice...

Never seen or heard of anybody hitting a driver, then "walk to the ball", and so on.....I hit around a few guys that will play a specific course at the range and go through their clubs that way.

Well I am sorta seriously practicing again since I am retiring at the end of March. I am semi retired now only working 3 days and 30 hrs. But I am seriously trying to get my body back in shape. One tends to gain weight and lose mobility sitting in the cab of a truck 10 to 12 hours a day. I have been doing stretching exercises using 5 lb weights. My back seems ok now so I have been practicing with my older heavy stiff shafted vintage irons and persimmon woods. Yesterday after church I worked on my putting about 2 hours then hit the range and hit 50 balls with the old sticks then walked a 8 club vintage 9 hole round. Today worked on putting about 2 hrs again and the short game for 1 hr then hit 100 balls. Walked 9 holes carrying 13 clubs this time. I have not felt sore or stiff in fact I am getting more limber. It is not so much about improving my game or score it is more about losing weight feeling better and enjoying walking my vintage rounds again. My carry bag is an real old school like a Jones but made out of ballistic nylon and is lighter than a moonlight type bag. I did modify it with a better Nike padded strap but it carries real light.
