What/How Did You Practice Today?

Recommended Posts

I ordered a hitting mat the other day and it came in the mail today. It's a Callaway 8x16 that I thought would be good enough to get in the backyard and work on some short chips. I set up an old plant container and proceeded to try to get one in.

I didn't sink one, but it did give me the opportunity to work on ball position, ball flight, and just making better strikes. 20200401_173319-01.jpeg

A semi-private course about 25 min North is open, so I went up there to hit balls. I hit a full pyramid and a half

I have the same small strip for my backyard. Works well enough!

On that note, I've been working a ton with my 60 degree wedge hitting all sorts of different chips and pitches. Even have a pretty good 15-25 yard lob shot going at the moment. Probably won't pull that out on the course unless absolutely necessary, however.

I got back outside today to spend more quality time with the new hitting mat working on short chips. Right now I have an old flower container with a diameter of about 12" that I'm using as my target. I still haven't landed one in it, but did have one bounce in and a couple more that hit it. I would have taken a picture, but the yard needs mowing and didn't think I'd expose y'all to that mess.

One of the things I've discovered about my chipping is that I have WAY too much tension in my swing. That, and I also discovered that I'm gripping the club really tight with my right hand. So today was just focus on nice and loose swings.

Got the net out again and took video for the coach. Probably the best the swing has looked in awhile! Even my leg action has improved. Now, just gotta be able to take it to the course, whenever that is.

This was the nice day, a few days ago, sandwiched in between the kinda weather that helps you keep you home.... Yes: enjoying a Stella while I attempted to chip one-handed (yes: put the Stella down and went back to two handed).

Net is a SKLZ "Quickster" 8x8 and it really is pretty quick and easy to set up and tear down. The chipping target is easily removable (and usually hangs on the inside; I was just experimenting with it on the back side).

Here's my chipping set up. I took a good bit of the day to cut the grass, so I didn't get as much practice time in. I had issues with my mower, too and had to run to the auto parts store to buy a new spark plug. 20200403_190436-01.jpeg
The flower pot is about 11 yards away and makes for a nice target to focus on. I did move the mat back at the end of the evening so I had a 15 yard distance to play with.

Two weeks ago, I couldn't see the grass in my backyard. Everything is closed and it will stay that way for a while, I'm affraid.

Putting in my carpeted basement.

Use my Dr Warren's Swing Fan outside. Can't use the wedges, the grass is too wet and muddy.

Bought a bike at Costco last week, it's a Northrock hybrid CTM. It comes with quick release front and rear wheels and seat post. I thief proofed it. It seems that I will be cycling for a while.

Spent some more time in the yard working on chipping. After seeing some video on here from members using editors, I decided to give one a try. I still need to play with it some more, it's a little finicky to crop and I think I might have put the same shot in a couple of times toward the end.

I had to completely edit the first 6 shots out where I bladed every one. I also did that toward the end and you'll see my target gets turned over from hitting it.

We're had a ton of rain over the past few days and our course was soaked, so I decided to go to the practice holes. Practiced 50 yds in. Then set up a game on the green. 10 balls from 2 to 5 feet. Starting at 2 had to sink all ten, then 3 feet, continuing to 5 feet. Same drill. I was going to do more but after all of the chipping and putting my back started to complain.
