What/How Did You Practice Today?

null

Recommended Posts

Practiced some dry swings today trying to get more depth in the swing. This time, this is not a random youtube tip i am trying. I have been told by multiple instructors to focus on more depth, but along the way i have strayed away from it. For me, I am seeing now how more depth reduces the cupping in my left wrist at the top and will help square up the club better.

Well some plans just don’t come to fruition. I’m on vacation this week and was planning to go to the par 3 course to compare gamer 9, PW with D7 9, PW. Four holes in it started pouring. I was supposed to play golf for real today - I got a text from my buddy that his course was closed because we’ve had so much rain and mine had no tee times. :(

I was able to get to the range and hit a number of shots. It was 93 when I teed off at 10:30 yesterday and 73 when I got to the range at 1030 today. Perfect! It was beautiful, Eagle 🦅 was back, nice cool breeze, very tight lies but that’s okay.

There was a flag at 142, 8 iron was carrying short of it, 7 past it very consistently. I also worked on pitching, trap play (terrible) and putting.

Ive shifted stuff around and am playing Sunday afternoon. I will be hitting balls again tomorrow and Saturday.

Went to the range absolutely determined to figure out what's going on with my driver. Over the course of a bucket, it looks like I've learned two things.

1 - My D7 is just too light. I lose where the head is all the time. I hit an older R1 far, far better with much straighter shots. Even the poor shots I hit with that driver would have been mostly playable and not definitely OB. The D7 was all over the place, even with some more controlled swings, which leads me to...

2 - My backswing has become WAY too long again. I set up so I could video a few swings and what felt to me like going back to waist height with my hands was actually a near perfect position. Unsurprisingly, balls hit from there were either straight or a slight draw. Taking what felt like my "normal" driver backswing looked like John Daly and those shots were all over the place.

Unfortunately I had to back out of the scramble I was supposed to be in this weekend due to a mandatory meeting I have to attend with my son for his confirmation class, but I cannot wait to get out on the course to see if I can hold onto what I saw today with the driver in hand.

Well after screwing up the date/time for a putting clinic this afternoon (to be rescheduled), I'm happy to say I had a REALLY PRODUCTIVE range session under the tutelage of @Jmikecpa ... who with a few key tips helped me start making waaaay better contact with my irons and hybrid - heck, even hit my 3W off the mat decently a few times (and have only used it off the tee up to now).

Gave me a great drill to work on, too, to help counter my bad tendency to hang back on the downswing. Look out golf balls - I'm gonna smash you guys! 😂

I don’t deserve any credit, your instructor had the right idea I just passed along a drill my son used for a similar issue. Keep working at it and you will continue to stripe it. I unfortunately am in late season wind down mode and my swing is like a 4 out of 10 at the moment.

Do you know what the swingweight is for your D7?  I also liked the feel of a heavier club; hit them much straighter.  A couple of years ago I bought a Wilson D300; very light!!  I was all over the place, so put a 65g shaft in it; had to add lead tape to the head to get swingweight up to D2.  It felt good, but now it was as heavy as other drivers I've tried.  I went back to the D300 with the stock light shaft, but removed most of the lead tape until I finally got D2.  Now it's light, and feels like I like it.  It took some getting used to, but I can swing it faster than any other driver so more distance, AND I can control it.

D7 is a D2 swingweight vs the R1 at D4.

You totally do ... it was the right tip at the right time! Simple & effective .. gonna continue to work on it .. definitely helped move me further along towards better ball striking 👍

AND.. the ball position tip, too! Fyi for the readers - JMike had me move the ball further forward in my stance with the hybrid, aaannd ... the ball flew higher, straighter and longer. No swing change .. just that setup change. Wow!

Snuck out to the muni's range this morning, I love being out there all by myself in the crisp morning air. My attempts at thinking what feels like a waist high backswing continued to work very well. Had some pulls with the driver but nothing that would have been off the planet; the majority of the shots were lower but straight and I'll take that 8 days a week. Keeping that backswing feel with my fairway woods was just amazing compared to what I'm used to. I spent most of the bucket just hitting wedges and short irons to targets and kept mixing things up.

It figures that I get the kinks worked out in OCTOBER...

Wait you’re actually skipping something significant to attend the mandatory confirmation meeting? Have you ever considered moving to Florida?

Thank you for taking your son’s religious instruction seriously.

In the old days we would use lead tape on a club to add tours swing weight. You might experiment with that a bit.

1 - Yes, my wife attended the one for our daughter and now it's my turn. Plus, she'll be out of town so it's on me. I was still going to play in the scramble, it's a 9am shotgun start so we were figuring I could probably get in at least 14 holes. But then there was a surge of teams signing up, the number was over 30 at last check, and I've played in this event enough to know that the majority of teams are slower than molasses so it wasn't worth paying the entrance fee to MAYBE get in 9 holes before I had to leave.

2 - Nope. 🙂

Was working at the range with my driver trying to reduce my power fade and straighten out the ball flight a bit. After I was warmed up and swinging with a bit of power, I decided to make a conscious effort to shallow my swing. I didn't do any specific drills, but instead slowed my takeaway, and then visualized the result I wanted while making a natural swing at the ball. (In my head I was thinking about the club tracer videos on a PGA Tour broadcast). Imagine my surprise when I started striping the ball down the range - better looking flight, without the power fade taking the ball way off line to the right!

I think a large part of the improved ball flight that is the shallower swing helped improve my negative AOA, reducing the spin, which is always a struggle for me with the big stick (I've actually managed to back up my driver shots on more than one occasion in wet conditions).

I bought a yardstick 2weeks ago and determined to improve my putting.   Put the ball on the 3 feet long stick and roll the ball over it.  It’s harder than I thought and I noticed how misaligned my eyes were to my stroke.   I tried with different putters and notice I got to handsy and went with larger putter grip that help.

Had been working hard on my putting overdoing  my eye alignment  that bleed into my long game and long game suffered    Had an aha moment today.  When I was setting up to hit   my irons, it feels I see the “top” of the ball for better striker.    With the driver it was the  “back “ of the ball.  If that makes any sense.    Im not sure about chipping and pitching but maybe it’s the “whole ball “

Having trouble aligning  my eyes to the “ apex” after reading the green  for long putts that move right to left    Closed to eyes to putt and seem strange at first but really felt the ball off the putter really well and as long as I have the “spot” in my mind eye I can putt   Felt more confident after holing a few with my eyes closed

I really wanted to play today, the weather this last week has been perfect. We've had lows in the mid 40's and highs in the lower 70's, but I've been working a lot and decided to go to the range today. Today was my fourth day off work since Labor Day, and decided the practice option was less time consuming and would allow me to spend more time with my wife.

Had a pretty good range season today working on a looser swing trying to get rid of the tension that has plagued me for years. I started out with wedge shots at thirty yards and moved up from there. I really focused on the 100-150 range today, as that is where Arccos has me being weakest. I felt like I did better than normal, i still need to work on alignment as I'm still missing left more than I like.

I then hit driver for a bit, using every quadrant on the face. High toe, high middle, low, low heel, high middle, and none of the ball marks in the spray powder touched. I finally realized I was getting too fast in transition and was trying to go full bore from the top. After adjusting to more of a slower transition and speeding up through the ball I saw better results.20201004_160929-01.jpeg.ffacdc1e94e6878991d2d9a45854a1e4.jpeg

Not perfect, but for me it's a better strike pattern. The high toe was actually the result of hitting a tee stem that was in the ground on the takeaway that threw me off. I then went back to a full shot with the sand wedge that was carrying to the 100 yard marker. I don't usually hit it that far, but it might have been from hitting it low on the face and having it come off the club at a lower trajectory.

It was a wonderful day to be out and I hope that I can play next weekend as night shift has the flex Saturday scheduled and we don't.

Working on my short putts this week. I been  trying to avoid the forward press. (Hands forward Just with Wedges around the green for me) Trying to reduce my follow thru and keep the face angle square to the hole. I’m trying to keep my follow through length shorter than my backstroke length.
At around 8 feet and further out is when I tend to follow thru length about the same or longer than backstroke

I took some time today to get out in the yard to work on my chipping, which killed my round yesterday. I was dealing with a case of the shanks that really hurt any chances of a good round. I realized that my swing was getting more armsy and I was letting my left arm get away from my body, kind of a chicken wing action. Today was all about staying connected and letting my body do the work. It's amazing how just a little tweak can make a huge difference. I almost dunked three shots into the flower pot I use to aim at, one actually hit the rim! I only shanked 3/36 shots and I'll take that after the the day I had yesterday.

I finally took my Hogan irons to my local golf course to get the grips I purchased from @chisag put on them. They'll get them back to me later this week, as no one was there to do it today.

After dropping them off I picked up a small range bucket to work on the technique I was trying with foam balls in the yard yesterday and alignment. I was surprised the range was open with the rain we had and actually got wet when a small shower came through as I was hitting. I hit all three wedges to different targets from 20-100 yards. Ended up shanking only three balls again and was really happy with the results. The balls were coming off the club face crisp and going close to where I was aiming.

I'll post pictures up once I get the Hogan's back, I'm excited to see how the new grips will look on them.

Yep changing grips is easy.

The hard part is trying to save the non-rubber putter grips. Those take a lot of patience if you want to try to save them

It's something I really want to try. I was hoping my wife would have the upstairs room cleaned out so I can set up a station, but it isn't done, yet.

had a great lesson with my coach today. we’ve been working a lot on face control.

in the longer clubs, i tend to leave it open. and in my mid irons and shorter clubs, i tend to pull the ball left.

today most were finding the middle, which was a great feeling.

my other tendency is adding loft as i add speed. for as fast as i swing and as far as i can hit the ball, my distances can get killed by wind because my ball flight is way too high. fixing that is up next. here’s one of my better 7iron shots from today. i’d like that loft to be in the 26-27* range.

Practicing short putts and find that for left to right sliders deviate differently than my normal routine    When I read a break that runs toward me I can see one line   But for the break that runs away I have to see “two lines” one from the cup to the apex and another from the ball to apex and kind of join those two lines   I think if I go through this routine and read from both sides I will not miss as many left to righter

So I what I’m saying is I can can see a draw curve easier.  When force to imagine a fade I have to think of two straight paths intersecting, if that makes any sense

Was working on putting today indoors, specifically on trying to not let my left hip rotate open. That may sound weird, but it is a really common issue. Here is what Monte had to say on this topic:

"The most common one I see — and it is nearly universal in people who are plagued by poor lag putting — is excess hip rotation. Sometimes there’s even an actual weight shift. Think of it this way; take a backstroke and stop. Rotate your hips 20 degrees without moving anything else. The putter and the arc is now pointed left of your intended line. You have to shove it with your arms and hands not to pull it. Good luck hitting it solid while doing all of that.

I had a golf school in Baltimore and told this story. Ten of the 15 people there assured me they didn’t do that. After 8 people had putted, we were 8-for-8. No. 9 said, “There is no ******* way I am going to move my hips after watching this.”

The entire group laughed after his putt told him he was wrong. The last 6 did everything they could to avoid the fault. We went 15 for 15. Many people are unaware that this issue is so dire. If you add the people that are unaware they have this issue, we are near 100 percent of golfers. I have gotten emails from 8-10 of them telling me how much their putting improved after all they did was focus on minimizing hip rotation and just hitting the ball solid."

had a great lesson with my coach today. we’ve been working a lot on face control.

in the longer clubs, i tend to leave it open. and in my mid irons and shorter clubs, i tend to pull the ball left.

today most were finding the middle, which was a great feeling.

Holy crap, 142 ball speed with a 7 iron? Once you improve what you want to improve about your swing, you should go into long driving, not joking.

haha thank you man, i appreciate that.

we’ll see where we’re at once i get the swing dialed in and get the right driver in my hands.

i’m still using a training driver on loan from my coach. it’s a cobra with the loft set down to 7 and a hzrdus smoke black 70g shaft i believe. it’s decently close to the right fit for me. im seeing carry distances at 330+ but the spin is still too high.

once i’ve got better control of the club face and can control my launch conditions, we’re gonna start fitting me to the right shaft and head and hopefully that carry number is somewhere in the 345-350 range.
