sirchunksalot
I wanted to play today, but work has kept me busy lately. I wanted to hit some balls, but not be away from the wife too long, so I went to the range. I mostly focused on irons and wedges today and making sure my alignment was right. Started out hitting wedges, shanking them consistently. I got frustrated with that and moved on to irons where I hit them pretty good and was starting to dial in a bit of accuracy. I still hit a few left, but the left miss was starting to be less pronounced. I realized I have to feel like my shoulders are aiming at the target which makes me feel like I'm aiming way right. My feet are parallel to the target line and I just need to learn to trust my aim point. Driver was good along with the 5 wood. I struggled last weekend with the 5, but a slight change in ball position (back a little more) had me ripping them. I finally went back to hitting chips, thinking about the video @cnosil posted and realized my stance was too wide and hit better shots. It's still a work in progress, but I was thinking back on my iron play from a couple of years ago and realized it has improved over time. I used to hate having an iron in hand and now I'm loving the challenge of improving with them. edingc, GolfSpy_SHARK, cnosil and 2 others 4

cksurfdude
Had another lesson yesterday where we went back to working on the full swing (using an 8i); last two lessons were chipping which really helped. Definitely showing progress! But the point i wanted to convey... Somewhere way back.. I think in this thread.. I think it was @revkev that mentioned.. amateurs should generally make a full swing, vs e.g. a 3/4 swing, with their irons. As we were going through the lesson, my swing got "looser" and more confident .. and I felt like I was able to start to really go after the ball. My distance picked up and dispersion tightened. Yea! To finish the lesson, the instructor set up a target green on the LM just a few yards shorter than the average of my practice / learning shots. And all of a sudden .. yep .. a little tension, a little too much thinking about it, and the swing is a little constricted ... I'd had a feeling about my approach shots - that while trying to steer the shot towards the target, while also trying to work the distance with an off-full speed swing, was not helping but conversely hurting me - and this exercise really made me internalize that!! So from now on it's full bore Rickp, sirchunksalot, Kenny B and 1 other 4 Quote WITB of an "aspiring" play-ah ... Vegan_Golfer_PNW
Worked on a couple things today. Did some bump and run work which I think will be super beneficial for me. second is continuing doing planemate work. Did some at home and the range, really focusing on takeaway and rotation. Also noticed when I took it off and did practice swings, hand position seemed good. When I then added a ball, it’s like I felt I needed to overswing and then would over rotate. Kenny B
Went to practice yesterday because there was only a slight breeze and the temp was close to 50º. Friday is probably the busiest day at the course because most people have the day off, even before COVID. No tee times until late in the day. Spent time working through 1/2 bucket on a bigger rotation in the backswing and rotating around my core; I have a tendency to slide a little both directions, and it gets worse when I get tired. I felt better doing it with my 9i, but longer clubs were more of a challenge. My driver was OK for backswing rotation, but I don't finish the swing very well. More practice needed. I used the remaining balls in the bucket to pitch onto the pitching green from 35y, then 20y. My rotation practice on full shots helps my pitching. Finished the practice with bump and run shots on the putting green with my LW and GW. I'm getting better using the GW, but still need more practice with this shot. I didn't do any putting practice. I probably should have, but I've been putting well and the greens are not in the best of shape with only basic mowing when they get a chance; maintenance is on vacation until spring. sirchunksalot, cnosil, Vegan_Golfer_PNW and 1 other 4 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
edingc
Two buckets at the range today focusing on improving my club path and also getting my right wrist into extension through the hitting area. Good results. Unfortunately, started to get tired both physically and mentally with about half a bucket left and started falling into bad habits. Need to keep my focus for longer or hit fewer balls. First swings with my new Callaway Epic Flash 4 hybrid, and it looks like it's going to slot in the bag perfectly between the Super Hybrid and the SpeedZone 5 iron. Ball speeds into the mid-140s on the best swings, pretty forgiving and for me only a slight draw bias. Tensei Silver feels pretty good, similar to the UST Recoil, if anything it felt a little loose but I got used to the feeling as I took more swings. Hit it both from a tee and also from the deck and had good results. Nice. I'm trying to work on similar things, though my thought going into impact is extend the arms into the arc/plane of the swing. Trying to work on that from chipping to pitching up to full swings. Then into the basement for some putting practice on the ExPutt. Out of 100 hit a bunch long and also left a bunch short (still wish this system would show you the make/miss at each distance), but ... most of the misses, and all the "bad" ones, were in the 10 to 20 foot range... edingc
Another two buckets at the heated range as part of project "Long Iron." Well, they were picking the range when I got there so I started with quite a few pitching wedges because they don't have a protected cart for picking... Anyway, I took what I worked on last week (right wrist in extension at impact), and sprinkled in some different feelings to improve my rotation. Yesterday I worked a lot with the Planemate in my backyard and got my hip turn better in the backswing. For me, the feel is to keep the right elbow in front of the right hip on the backswing, and that gets me turning really well. That was all fine and great, but then I video'ed myself and noticed quite a slide on the downswing: Today at the range I focused more on keeping pressure on the inside of my left foot on the downswing. My tendency, as shown above, is to roll the pressure to the outside of my left foot which gets the whole sliding thing going (flip hooks and blocks for days...). This was the best range session I've had this winter, and probably the best I've had since really trying to improve my game. I had a little tailwind, but was landing 6 irons about 195, 5 irons at the 205 pin and clearing that 205 green easily with the Epic Flash 4 hybrid. I even broke out an old Cobra AMP driver with a cut down regular flex 3 wood shaft in it that I had in my basement and hit a couple that landed at or just past the 255 green and rolled out to the end of the range. All of this work on rotation is really helping me find the sweet spot a lot more. I didn't video myself today, opting to just watch ball flight, strike location and ball speed on my Mevo. I'm pleased, to say the least. cksurfdude, Shapotomous, sirchunksalot and 1 other 3 1 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 7.5 / Anti-Cap: 13.0 (Last Updated Feb. 19, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°, -1/N), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. cnosil
Got some feedback from my instructor on my distance wedge shots. Gave me some advice so I went to MGS to hit some wedge shots on the GC Quad. 2 things he wants me to work on: keeping the face open (I do miss left) and shortening the swing even more. The shortening of the swing is really difficult; I feel like I am getting to shaft parallel and I am almost to arms parallel. The combination of the shaft position and trying to generate enough speed in my rotation to hit the ball 50 yards is really tough. Got handed a tour striker smart ball to try. First time I had used one and really didn't have a problem with it; even on full swings, so I guess my swing isn't horrible. Also saw some of the 2021 most wanted drivers; higher end shafts seem to be prevalent and some of them were pretty surprising visually. Can't wait to hear peoples thoughts. Chip Strokes
i took my PW, 6i, and 3w to the range today. the first half of my bucket, i worked on partial shots with the irons, particularly on controlling my trajectories. i was hitting my 6i out to about 150 working it high and low, and my PW out to about 100 the second half of the bucket, i spent some time dialing in my 3W, and then played a few “simulated holes” then i finished with pitches to various targets from 25-100 yards. cksurfdude, Vegan_Golfer_PNW, GolfSpy_SHARK and 3 others 6 Quote SIM2 8º | KuroKage XD 70TX SIM 3W 14º | Fujikura Atmos Black Tour Spec 9TX SIM2 5W 18º | Fujikura Ventus Black 10X U500 2i | Fujikura Ventus HB Black 10TX T100 4-PW | Dynamic Gold X7 SM6 52* SM8 56* SM8 60* | Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 DW | BGT Stability Tour
GolfSpy BOS
I took advantage of the melted snow and mostly dry front yard today to take a few clubs and my Skilz swing trainer out to loosen up.Had the swing speed radar with me and after a little warm up the first swings were.... uninspiring. 96MPH max.I’ve had a bit of a stiff neck so I was easing into it, but they certainly felt like winter swings after not having the clubs out for a while. I was quite happy at the end of the session to get two up at 114 before ending for the day. That’s only a few MPH shy of my max dry swings over the summer. Hopefully the winter cooperates and I can keep swinging outside to stay loose and get some more superspeed training in. sirchunksalot, GolfSpy_SHARK, edingc and 5 others 8 Quote Epic Max LS 10.5 - Motore X F3 6X | Speedzone 5-wood - Ventus Blue 8S | TSi3 20* Hybrid - KBS Proto 85S SMS Pro 4-PW - Steelfiber i110S | MG3 Raw Black 50.09, 54.11, 58.11 - DG TI S200 ER2B | Pro V1x | NX9 Slope | Jones Trouper R | CaddyLite EZ v8
LeftyMatt89
Did a gapping session with GC Quad. Found I needed to bend my wedges all weak to hit preferred gapping. Also a few lofts were off from Mizuno which was surprising. edingc
Another trip to the range today. Currently in one of those states where I'm unsure if I'm making progress or not. Ball speed numbers have been down slightly the last couple times out, but I think some of that is attributed to it being very cold outside - even if the balls start out at room temperature by the time I'm through the baskets they've sat on cold concrete for over an hour. It was 21 degrees when I started this morning, so I'm sure that has some effect on the ball speeds I'm producing. (Not to mention the fact that they are range balls to begin with...) Worked on my setup and grip this morning, trying to get a little more secondary axis tilt at address and also ensuring I don't get too weak with my left hand grip. The additional tilt seemed to help ward off the pulls and pull hooks that have been hurting me, so much so that I started leaving stuff out to the right. Oh well. Still practicing almost exclusively with longer clubs - 2 hybrid, 4 hybrid, 5 and 6 SpeedZone irons. Misses seem to be getting smaller, so "Project Long Iron" is coming along, I think. Weather permitting, hoping to get back out there on Friday and Monday again. I spent 5-10 balls going all out with the 5 iron again - ball speeds weren't great because I didn't hit the middle as much as the other day, but it was nice to hit 102 MPH on the Mevo with one of my swings, with some others at 100 and 99. SuperSpeed and weightlifting still continuing to pay off. tony@CIC
It's been about 3 1/2 weeks since I held a club in my hand, so I've been itching to get out. Today was the first time I've been able to get away to the range. Started out with my normal routine; SW, 8i, Wood and finishing with the Driver. Overall pretty pleased with the results - maybe I need to take a break more often. I was especially pleased with my new F9 five wood. Chip Strokes
today was all about testing a new shaft in my Sim, so i booked some time on the simulator at my local range Sim 8* set to 8.75*, GD XC 7TX shaft playing at 45” heres a 5 consecutive shot spread: and here’s my best for the day spin is still a little high for my liking, but that’s mostly due to my delivery. i’m working on a little more positive AoA to lower spin into the 2200-2400 range. with those launch conditions, carry should be 330+. we’re getting there. Shapotomous
The rain has held off all day so once I got some yard work done I got out the foot spray & did a net session with the 5 & 8 irons. I was consistently in the same spot which was about a 1/4 ball toward the toe side and a couple grooves high. I then dragged the hitting mat outside and did a 45 yard and 65 yard wedge session, about 40 shots from each distance. I had the same impact spot on the wedges as the 5 & 8 so I guess consistency is a good thing. Then just for grins I got out the 4i and experimented hitting a bunch, flattening it about 2 more degrees and hit it a bunch more. Using the sharpie line and lie board I saw a slight positive difference in the sole impact and face line on the before and after adjustment. I'll go with that set up for a while and see if it behaves itself on the course. cksurfdude and sirchunksalot 2 Quote Modern Bag: G410 LST 10.5*, Hzrdus Smoke RDX 6.5 Flex; 915F 3w, Diamana S+ 70 S flex; Snake Eyes 18* 2h, 23* 4h & 27* 5h; JPX 900 Forged 6 - PW, PX LZ 6.0; Edison 2.0 49*, 53*, 57* KBS Tour 120 S; Heppler Fetch; Ball - MTB-X; Bag - Jones MyGolfSpy Edition!
