What/How Did You Practice Today?

Recommended Posts

Gingerly got some iron swings in today on the skytrak to focus on turning my shoulders at the take away and letting my hands come down into the slot on the downswing and swinging a bit more in to out.

Also set up a track on the rug for putting to my putt out trainer.  Still some work to do as I was missing too many early with bad direction.

Since it looked nice out my window, I decided to head to the course for some practice. 39 with a 10 mph wind. Sheesh!
Hit 5 balls, stop and warm my hands!! For the conditions I did ok... working on my takeaway and I hit the ball better.

39* isn't too bad but when you add in the wind you can count me out.  Trevino always says initiate the takeaway with the lead shoulder!

I was dying to try the new driver, so I went to a Sim closer to my house this time. I warm-up on the range and yardages are WAY off. I go get an attendant and have them reset it. I start back up and begin to play Muirfield Village. Well. All I can say is that with this driver, I’m swinging 136mph, and ball speed is over 200. Yep. What a joke.
I played the whole 18 just to swing, but it was ridiculous. Here are a couple pics of what the sim was spitting out.

You been on the Bryson workout plan? 😂

Well, at least you got to swing it, hopefully you can find a SIM that's more accurate and try it out.

Not sure of the brand. Tiger endorses it.... Its inside a big entertainment business that has bowling, zip lines, sims, laser tag, etc.
Driver felt great! It really doesn’t feel heavy. I tried the left dash balls and the two together felt AWESOME.

The pic is the sim I’ll go to Sunday, where I usually go, that seems more accurate. The display looks exactly like Alex Etches’s on YouTube.

I was initiating the takeaway thinking about my trail wrist if that makes sense.  Look at a face-on view of Bobby Jones with a driver.  With soft wrists I start the backswing with my arms/wrists actually bowing the trail wrist a little.  The club lags behind then catches up.  This prevents the club from being pulled to the inside (old, old habit that comes back periodically).  When I get to transition, I get more rotation and the club comes more from the inside on the downswing.  Much better strike; more distance and straighter shots.  Now the truth will be known tomorrow when I take it to the course.  😂

Hitting more with the skytrak in the garage and trying to ensure I am making solid contact for the most part.

Messing around with too many thoughts in my head and need to put an end to that.  Might get a lesson once my ankle is all the way healed so that I know the specific drills to work on based on sound advice from a pga professional.

A very cold two buckets this morning, clear skies and sunny but couldn't keep my hands warm at all. Temps were in the mid-to-upper teens so not ideal weather. I could at least follow ball flight today which was a nice relief.

My goal today was to work on two things from my lesson Monday, getting a good turn and not throwing my upper body forward to start the downswing. I'd say about one-third of the balls I hit today were very good, and over half were definitely much improved from the past few weeks before my lesson. I'm still struggling to get a good turn, but it also took me a good 25-30 balls to get loose. I was much more successful with keeping my upper body from moving forward on the downswing.

It's amazing how much better I hit my driver and hybrids when my upper body stays back. Had several drives land at or past the 252 flag, and I had a few silly Super Hybrids from the deck (including the video below). So glad I picked up that club and replaced my 3 wood.

Got out to the heated bays this past Thursday, I've been doing a lot of "dry" swings in the living room trying to groove 1) A flat left wrist without losing my arms at the top of my backswing 2) Not "humping the goat"

I'm pretty happy with my progress on 1, but still early extend quite a bit. I'm going to do more practice swings with my butt up against a chair to hopefully ingrain that movement pattern better. Here's an 8 iron from this week, and then a 7 iron from late August. Boy does shorts and a tee shirt look great right now 😅

The Super Hybrid has so much pop in it, it's crazy. There is a legitimate chance I could go for the par 5 in two on the back nine at my home course next year now. Completely changing my long game.

The Super Hybrid has so much pop in it, it's crazy. There is a legitimate chance I could go for the par 5 in two on the back nine at my home course next year now. Completely changing my long game.

I hope you do! What’s the ball flight looking like? Pretty consistent?

Yeah, likes the left side but it's not really hook biased. I will probably just need to aim down the right side of wherever I want it to go which will insulate against my bad miss which is a pull left.

Stiff. Nice and smooth feeling shaft, although I'm finding I get along pretty well with the feel of all of the Mitsubishi shafts I've tried.

Yeah, I had much more luck with working on the turn during my lesson indoors at a balmy 70-ish degrees. When it's that cold, even with the heater in the stall, it takes me a good 40-50 balls just to get loose!

I decided that my wife's yoga mat would do me more good than her.. split in half and taped end to end makes a perfect 10' runway. Rolls true at about a 10. Added marks at 10', 5', and 3'. 3-5 footers have been the my nemesis.

One of my goals for 2021 is to make my weakness (putting) my strength. After spending a week with this setup, the Puttout, a new toe-heavy blade putter, and a putt stroke overhaul, my round on Saturday I already noticed my putting had had improved night and day. Feel like I still have some work to do but everything already feels so much more comfortable.

Super stoked!

Went to the sim today to test out these bad boys head to head:
1.jpg.120d81e0225b809f3cae150089b9dbea.jpg

I will be doing a little review at some point as I use the RDX but I don't think there is even a question at this point. I had 40 swings on both shafts (sets of 5) today and if the numbers didn't speak for themselves the feel did.

This was my averages over the sets and today was not a very fast Swing Speed day whatsoever and the hulk felt like a 3 inch dowel while the RDX was extremely smooth, with substantially less spin. Will cover in a review down the road but I never get below 3k spin and I did a few times today.

Also figured out what setting I should be on with the titleist adapter and that is A2. my club face was varying between 1 degree open to 1 degree closed on average which I was very happy with. Was also very happy with my path today which as usual was out to in but was much closer to a straight path consistently. I don't typically see close to a straight path consistently

Great initial testing. Interesting to see such a difference is efficiency for the RDX to have the same ball speed. Was this a stike pattern issue or something with the way that club read. Otherwise nice drop in soon from that RDX.

So ball speed was low guessing from the balls (used what was there chrome softs). I’ll have to use some door spray but felt like today anyway I was getting a lot of square strikes on the face, on top of not feeling the need to swing as hard (6 mph difference on the average there). I’m going to be interested to see what my dispersion is over this upcoming year. I have not swung in about 2 weeks and always feels a little awkward at first which it did with the hulk but just felt so smooth right away with the RDX. My first couple swings were in the 106 range for speed and they just felt great

You said you struggle with spin, do you have that issue with other heads as well.   The RDX sees like a better shaft, but would be interesting to see ball speed and distances with a lower spinning setup.   Do you know AoA?   Our speeds are similar and I know I am losing lots of distance so I know you can get more out of a swing than what you are showing there.

After a poor showing with the putter on Tuesday I decided to investigate what was going on. Sometimes the answers to our problems are so stupid and simple. After 3 years of gaming a 33" putter, I clearly have some "muscle memory" in regard to setup and was too close to the ball. Found that taking a little bend out of my knees and standing a touch more upright was all I needed to fix my issue of constant heel strikes and a wayward path. Ready to get out again and see the results on the course!

I’ll have to look next time I don’t think that was on this sim but I’m negative for sure just don’t know how negative now.

I definitely have not unlocked my distance potential and this was a slow day (usually around 115) I NEVER get spin below 3k no matter what head it seems anyway
