A lot of work recently has been to keep my hands quiet and relaxed all across the board - full swing, chipping and putting.

If I get too active in my hands during a full swing, I have a tendency to either pull the clubhead inside or, more likely as is my overcorrection, to push my hands outside on the takeaway. With chipping, too active of hands prevents me from using my rotation to hit the ball and I struggle with sticking the club into the ground behind the ball or hitting it really thin. And with putting, my hands being active leads to poor face control.

Additionally, still working on getting better rotation into my rear hip. If I do it right, my path is nicely zeroed out or a bit to the right. Poor rotation leads to a more left path and with my longer clubs leads to lots of pulls and pull hooks.

I sent this screen cap to my coach on Saturday and he really liked the progress with the rotation:

May I inquire at what establishment you are at in this picture?

Being starved for ball striking and no space I was down in the basement hitting foam balls off a mat with a six iron into the basement wall that was probably 12' away. (cinder block wall, whitewashed) Got one really nice and it rebounded off the wall with decent force directly into my left eye. Fortunately the lid was in the lowered position at the moment of impact, else I'd probably be in trouble.

A Christmas Story GIF by filmeditor

These "foam" balls are kind of hard actually, might be the answer to the distance problem. 😏

Registered for the Districts this week so now it's back to the grind.  Putting is going to be the focus for the foreseeable future after putting 12 miles on my snowblower this week 🙂

I just ordered the PuttOut and plan to use my downtime working on my stroke and pace.  Anyone who has one chime in, I would love to hear your thoughts.

Finally made a breakthrough in what my brain needs to think for my body not to take the club inside on the takeaway. Had gotten instruction on this from my instructor and i could replicate a more vertical takeaway on some swings, but had a hard time getting it to stick. Drills only helped a bit, i really needed to think about what i personally need to think/feel to fix my takeaway.

I finally figured out what that thought is and it will probably will not make any sense to anyone else except myself. I can't think about swinging my arms or doing something with my left arm, right arm, body, etc. My thought is that between my hands and arms, there is sort of a triangle formed, let's call that point A. To make the proper takeaway and get to left arm parallel, i need to think about moving the triangle in the most efficient manner from point A to point B at left arm parallel while keeping the triangle. I am sure that this probably will not work for anyone else but me...

To me that sounds like page 32 of my golf bible....

The biggest light bulb for me wasn't the part of the triangle and keeping the arms close together. It was more how that triangle needs to move. Previously, I thought to prevent an inside takeaway, I need to "swing" my arms straight back. But I realized that swinging arms straight back combined with pivot = inside takeaway.

😀

My self-discovery of how I feel the arms move to not be inside aligns with what Jake Hutt is showing in this Instagram post. Note, I wasn't specifically trying to apply what Jake is showing, its just that what he is showing aligns with what I am now feeling on the backswing part of the arm movement.

I completely get it....the suggestion, illustration, swing thought, etc that clicks with us is personal.  Some are visual learners able to imitate what we see but can't make sense out of a verbal description and some have to see it broken down in writing with sketches.

I have read that Hogan book many times but I can still pick out one or two new things (or maybe I just forgot them) when i read through it again.  I use it as a refresher for the fundamentals much like Nicklaus used an early season session with Jack Grout.  But my results are much much less effective than his!!  😁

Whatever works for ya is great!  👍

Haven’t been hitting the 5 iron well at all for a long time. I guess that you could say that it is a confidence killer. Decided to hit a few balls in the garage this morning and have a little talk with the 5 iron.

With the help of a can of spray foot powder, I think that I found the problem. Holy heel/hosel shots Batman!!! That explains a lot.

IMG_0542.jpg.d5c284e5f58816d70d5765f6aeef06ef.jpg

Wiped the club clean and resprayed for round two. Hard focus on my takeaway and limited myself to 1/4 swings to attempt good contact. Worked up to about a 1/2 swing and it was looking promising. I will definitely need to keep working on this for a bit. When I get beyond a 1/2 swing it starts to get out of wack again.

I hit quite a few balls into the net yesterday in between doing some small chores and projects.  The hand position at the top and hip timing & position are feeling pretty good.  I am still having to think about it but I am getting closer to normal swing speed doing it.

I also did quite a few swings with the home made speed sticks working on a more tilted driver setup and exaggerating the swinging up and through the impact area to improve the launch angle a couple °'s.  The simulator session numbers this past week showed I need to do a little work in that area.

Still doing lots of chipping practice off the basement carpet, working on low point control and rhythm. I've found feeling like my head is on a swivel really helps me rotate and not just use the arms.

Also been battling the cold temps and snow to get out on the patio with the Planemate for a few minutes. With that, I've been working on better rotation through the ball. Hopefully the roads clear up, and I'll be able to get to the range this weekend. Winter storm closed the range this last Saturday...

so smooth man!

Thanks. I need to speed up the swing a bit once I get accustomed to the changes. But generally i am a smooth tempo swinger.

Beat another winter storm system up to the range this morning for two buckets before it started to get gross. Took a handful of the freshly-built Sub70s and my Cobra wedges. Shop owner was nice enough to bend the wedges two degrees more upright for me (to one flat from stock), which solved longstanding issues I've had with hitting the ball right and off the toe.

Session wasn't as good as two weeks ago, but I was very impressed with the Sub70/MMT combo. Picked up a bit of club and ball speed across the bag and more distance as a result.

Major focus today was again to feel like my head doesn't move forward on the downswing. I have the feeling of having my head on a swivel and that seems to work well. I did pretty good but still need a lot of work. When I get it right, however, the contact is awesome and the bit of early extension I fight goes away, as do the hooks!

I did struggle a bit with the two long irons I brought (4 and 5). When it's this cold (sub 20s) I have a hard time getting my hips loosened up, and I start to compensate for a poor turn by getting the club too far behind me on the backswing. From reviewing video it also looks like I may have started to let my hands creep too far in toward my body at address. Oh well. I did hit some great shots overall, and from 8 iron to my wedges I was extremely happy.

Registered for the Districts this week so now it's back to the grind.  Putting is going to be the focus for the foreseeable future after putting 12 miles on my snowblower this week 🙂

I just ordered the PuttOut and plan to use my downtime working on my stroke and pace.  Anyone who has one chime in, I would love to hear your thoughts.

the PuttOut is great, it really makes you focus and becomes very addicting to try and hole one out. It can be a lot harder than you think, and after you sink the first one sinking the next one is just as addictive. I've found that is has really helped me hone in on my pace and also my path. It shows you what you can get away with while rolling one up but not getting it to stay, but also what you are working towards.

100% agree.  I did not expect it to be as challenging and now I am glad to be wrong.  More motivation to work harder and improve my putting.

Not sure what your preference is but I do find it helpful to add an extra layer of info with making a few lines on the golfball to give feedback on club path and face position

Working on cleaning some stuff up in the swing. My right arm would previously get stuck in the downswing.

Agreed...that doesn't look like the swing of a 21 handicap golfer.
