What/How Did You Practice Today?

Recommended Posts

I had a backyard wedge session last night with the 53*.  I was out for a practice 9 on Sunday evening and hitting many different shots on each hole rather than 'playing' and noticed my 65 - 80 yard shots were not good.  Then I started thinking how I hadn't really practiced them much over the previous couple weeks.... duh!  I usually hit 30 - 40 shots in the 45 - 65 yard range at least 3x's per week and the swing tempo translates to the longer yardage but with a different wedge.  The first batch had inconsistent contact and distance results but by the last batch 11 of 12 hit the green and rolled out in a nice grouping.

My nephew stopped by yesterday for a starter lesson.  He is late 20's and hasn't really played the game but agreed to be our 4th in a league.  He was too busy to stop by for some basics before the league started up and last week he averaged about 10 for each hole.  He was making better contact in about an hour and then he and a buddy went to play.  He told me later he actually had 2 pars mixed in with a bunch of bigger numbers. He said full shot contact was much better and most shots were lost around the green.  Maybe he'll halve a hole or two this week!  😄

First trip to the range this spring, and took along my new Mevo+. AirPods in to hear the feed back and Mevo sitting in front of the bag.  A busy place. As it’s my first time really out (I’m not counting hitting into a net at home) I wanted to get a handle on my numbers from the Mevo - first time for it too away from home. No big surprises (getting older has resulted in loss of swing speed) but I see some clear difference in my driver in launch angle. Something to work on.

Biggest thing to work on w my irons in solid contact rather than fat shots behind the ball. 7B6F02E4-3796-469E-88CA-2D50DFCEFD53.jpeg.ea254ecba325556869610cb3d28cc842.jpeg
These are my key practice clubs. The TourStrikers. Makes sure I have a descending blow. It’s helped over the years but I suspect um getting more out to in.  With the TourStrike Pro I hit some amazing pulls or hooks. Nice and high (which it good) and pretty solid (also good) but big sweeping curves to the left. Not sure if that’s a function of the small hitting face and Ho I jphave to manipulate it or what. But when I grab a regular iron after that warm up they are back on line.

best part of practice - outside, sunshine and 80*....

My wife and I had to get outside in order to clean her car for its lease inspection and afterward decided to bring out the Divot Board to work on contact. I read @rbsiedsc post on keeping his back to the ball longer on the downswing and thought I'd try it out. I made pretty decent contact and it seemed to move strike more toward the toe. 20210425_161037-01.jpeg.13ef55dbf5219947e26d874c9b1ca6c1.jpeg20210425_161539-01.jpeg.b49e1c5a0a3195bb4c3a43bbd761d728.jpeg20210425_161715-01.jpeg.b62576177b6c2d07b18f31306852eca8.jpeg

I'm not saying I was super consistent, I did have a few bad ones thrown in. 20210425_161926-01.jpeg.f1c7fdf12139a39a7f9cec6ca3926c7a.jpeg

I had a couple that were worse, but didn't take photos of them. Overall, it made me feel better about my irons.

Finished off by working on differential drills using a chipping and pitching motion going no higher that 9 o'clock. I was able to hit shots off the toe, heel, and center pretty much on command. I think I'll stick with doing this drill with a shorter swing for a while before going with the full swing.

Great job!  Keeping the back to the target longer has really helped me, and it is the result of Monte's No Turn Cast drill and Justin Rose's pre-swing drill.  Keep it up!!

Update. Divot board work today again. Really trying to understand divot patterns. Also worked on the nail drill. An amazing visualization. Really helped me understand club path. Think that will be super useful if n my long game and that is where I come more OTT. Took out the 5i with the planemate red band for some feels. Then back to work on the divot board. Boom!

I'm liking it pretty good, I even incorporated the feel in my SuperSpeed training yesterday and noticed it's pretty much a feel I get when doing the step change. I like how it helps sequencing and not using my arms and shoulders not start the downswing.

While working on getting my pressure on the right side to start the backswing, caught myself moving off the ball a bit too much and then a little bit of a slide on the downswing. Working on staying centered, but also ensure I don't get pressure to my left side too early. Overall goal is to keep arms in sync with pivot.

Doing this gets me coming in shallow without the right shoulder dipping early.

I'm working on the strike plan and really enjoy it. It's going to take a while to accomplish everything in it, but once I do I hope to get the accuracy plan. I'll be interested to see how well it works for you and hope to hear about some great results!

Thanks. I figured I could bypass strike plan so will see. I sadly missed out on the divot board deal with him.

Talking about divots, i went from being a turf destroying superintendent's worse nightmare, to taking thin divots. Little bit perplexed that it changed that much overnight with one swing change.

Rolled a bunch of putts today while the big kid took a nap.

I've been focused on a couple different putting drills since I bought the PuttOut and one thing that's really helped me was addressing my tempo.

I am taking the putter back much slower and keeping the head low back and through the stroke.  Not only has contact been better but the on-course results are there.  For someone that never loved practicing putting, I wish I had bought this thing much sooner.

Totally agree bought one off @B.Boston and I have really enjoyed it. Definitely been putting more.

Continuing working on my short game with form and direction control with wedges this afternoon. Went to one if the local munis to use the chipping green which is almost always empty. Driving range was packed, putting green had several people on it, and there were several groups waiting to tee off on one and ten. Chipping green was empty though so I was able to get a solid hour in. Definitely saw solid improvements with direction control and decent progress with distance control on short shots so I wrote up that session as successful.

Not exactly sure why I hadn't done this before. I work at a high school where I teach and coach baseball.  We have a giant indoor hitting facility complete with nets, hitting mats and PLENTY of room to swing.  Yesterday I had the bright idea to bring my hitting net into the building and get a full bag session in before my team's game....I feel like a goon sometimes...

Jumbo bucket today charting shot patterns. Got to driver and it was a mess. Needed to do some nail drill and that helped a little. Then some chipping practice with open and closed faces to adjust trajectory. Finally some putting working on distance control.

No I have been doing some of the drills at home without hitting balls but at the range today I started with some short pitches with the 50 and worked my way up to full swings. Then moved to 8 iron and then 6 iron. Really enjoyed the simplicity and ease of use.

Great practice at the range this afternoon. First time hitting full shots with the GBox Shallower and really enjoyed it.

Had a lesson yesterday and made a few significant changes including weakening my grip and getting my club path more out-to-in. All of my practice over the winter got me coming very in-to-out and was causing a lot of hooks.

The other major feel change for me was with my backswing and having my arms and shoulders start the swing and not using the hips until my arms and shoulders can't turn anymore. This was in contrast to me trying to turn my hips early.

Basically, I over corrected a lot of things and the lesson got me back on the right track. Hit a small bucket after work yesterday and saw some promise, struck the ball well during my round this morning and then was able to get a bucket of practice in despite the misting rain at lunchtime and really started to see some good progress.

Hopefully I keep moving in the right direction!

Just finished up week 5 of SuperSpeed, not my best day but also not my worst. Had to pick up my wife's new lease car, pick up dinner, and clean the coils on the fridge before doing it so I was a bit tired. I hit a high of 117 with my lightest stick, which is only 3 mph from my best swing ever. Here in a couple more weeks I'll get out and see what gains I've made. I learned the last go round it might be a little while before the jump, so I'm not in a rush.

Planning on a range day tomorrow and a game Sunday for the Grint challenge.

Raining here all weekend so I took a trip to the covered range today. Using the top tracer technology to get all my iron gaps dialed in
