What/How Did You Practice Today?

Had a range day today. Was pretty tired by the end. First 3/4 of the bucket was great. Went through the bag had some great swings and contact. Focusing on face control and tempo. Messed around with some shot shaping too which I was happy with.

on course I felt myself going back to old tendencies, today I focused on breaking those tendencies (all planemate stuff) and it was great. Still need to keep my back planted as I am still jumping the hips forward but I’m content because striking is much much much better

Progress man! We’re you trying to go shorter in the backswing there? (Driver) or is that a result of the planemate work?  Whatever it is… looks like a powerful transition.

Combo I think? I was trying to be shorter. Longer I go the more my wrists go all over the place, I also dIdnt lose any speed with much more control. Planemate has a lot to do with the thought of doing it

My son and I headed back to the range last night to continue focusing irons and in particular on items from our last lesson. Unfortunately, the more I practice the worse I get. 😐 I have steadily declined since April when I picked up a club for the first time in a long while and decided to get back in the game.  I did break out the driver at the end of the session and piped 3 of my 5 swings long and straight allowing myself to leave on a positive note.  Next lesson is at 3pm today. Hopefully we figure a few things out...

My son and I had our lesson this afternoon.  I apparently get the clubhead generally square in my practice swings but when I go to actually strike a ball, I have the club face wide-open. Even knowing this, I can't seem to not do it. Worst part is that this wasn't a major issue several weeks ago, but now it is every swing.  Will keep working and eventually get it sorted.

Worked around swinging more around the body with my driver to help with the inside to out path.

Also worked on putting for a few and softening my bottom hand and getting my ball on my start line.  Feeling really good for the 30 minute session

Met up with a buddy this morning at the range after talking with him about my driver woes. He's a single digit and normally wins long drive every time we're in a scramble together. I hit a few balls and he pointed out that I really wasn't turning my shoulders very much in the backswing, lots of arm overrun. Which makes sense as to why feeling like I'm hitting a punch shot has been working for me lately. He had me making a turn with an iron across my chest and pointing the butt towards my back foot and trying to feel that in my regular swing. I did hit some decent driver shots after a bit but it's something to work on. Feeling that with my irons & wedges gave me a consistent draw I've never seen before, which was kind of nice as someone who loses the ball right a lot.

i had a lesson tonight and worked on width in my backswing.

my path shifted to 2-3* I-O and i was absolutely flushing my irons.

we worked on hitting target greens through the bag from PW-5i, and i was as good directionally as i’ve been all season

it seems i’ve picked up a little speed as well. my 8i was 102-103mph, 7i 106-107, and 6i touched 110 a few times.

we finished up with some chips and pitches, as 40-80 yards is the absolute worst part  my game and it’s a shot i’m left with a lot.

I hit a small bucket this morning just wanting to build off of what I worked on yesterday, feeling more of a shoulder turn and also feeling like I keep my head back when I start the downswing (which is really just keeping it in place and not moving my upper body forward). I absolutely flushed some irons today. Also hit a bunch thin but that's OK. Driver was so-so but the Bertha Mini and my fairways off the tee were awesome.

The practice greens had been punched so I just stuck around the chipping green for half an hour working with my 54 and 58. Holed a couple of chips and left on a good note.

I took some time yesterday to work on weight shift in my swing using the Divot Board to quantify my results. I have a tendency to keep my weight back on my right foot throughout the entire swing as shown in my last range session. Screenshot_20210617-110824_Gallery-01.jpeg.dc5b8a565e0c722fbe742767ceaf6afd.jpeg

I found a water bottle drill where you place the bottle behind your trail foot and try not to knock it over. I've been doing practice reps in the house the last few days, working on the feel of doing it properly. With the Divot Board I was seeing better ground interaction with a lot of swings hitting at or ahead of the ball mark. I did get a little sloppy on a couple of shots and was hitting 4 inches behind the ball.

I'm planning on playing this weekend, hopefully my iron and fairway wood game will show some improvement.

hit the range today to get some reps working on taking the club back wider.

results were more of the same from last nights lesson:

slightly in to out path, great contact, nice high ball flight with a touch of a draw. hit a couple fat, but overall happy with my contact

came to the realization that more width in the backswing is giving me room to really go after the ball without feeling like i’m swinging out of my shoes. i used to feel crowded coming through impact

all this means…sorry boys…faster swing speeds.

When I grow up, I want to swing my driver as fast as your PW. 😜

I'm glad the work from your lesson is paying off and that you're seeing positive results from the extra width in your backswing. Keep it up!

Haha.  True Sam.  I’ve tried Chess, and let me tell you, I can mess up a game in three moves for sure.  So I’m sure I could mess up either of those two games if I tried hard enough.  😂😂

All I can envision is the lady falling from the second story window on Happy Gilmore…

I hope your rotator cuffs can keep up with this beast mode.  Goodness that is moving. I haven’t messed with that thing in months. Refuse to practice and or change anything that I’m doing currently…. Because, well if I say it, it will all come crumbling down. So use your imagination.

hit the range today to get some reps working on taking the club back wider.

results were more of the same from last nights lesson:

slightly in to out path, great contact, nice high ball flight with a touch of a draw. hit a couple fat, but overall happy with my contact

came to the realization that more width in the backswing is giving me room to really go after the ball without feeling like i’m swinging out of my shoes. i used to feel crowded coming through impact

all this means…sorry boys…faster swing speeds.

PW cracked triple digits

and driver hit a new milestone

Took the Mevo+ out for a spin again this afternoon with a medium bucket. I'm still working on getting my hip turn better, as per my last lesson's homework. What I've realized is that I need to not just focus on my right side, and that in order to pivot correctly, I need to allow my left side to "release" and turn as well. Making way better turn and contact with that thought.

And, with @Chip Strokes's posts in mind, I also was working on width in my backswing and getting through the ball with my right shoulder on the downswing. Really great results with my longer clubs that I brought.

I hit four drives. The tees are moved up a bit, and I flew one over the fence and bounced two over, so I quit. Talk about throwing a blanket over where they landed!

I switched back to the Aldila Rogue White 60X from the AutoFlex and immediately have started to stripe it again. Hopefully it carries over to the course.

Hit the practice green 2x this week. Haven’t picked up my driver or irons once this week to hit the range. Really putting in the work to shave off a few strokes each round since I rarely hit one putts

Had a good range session today that included a lot of long game work.

I took Mark’s Radspeed/Motore X F1 along for the ride to see if the 9* vs 10.5* and shaft combos would show anything different.

From the eye ball test while the 9* had a bit lower trajectory on average, but both were generally flying the same consistently  and landing in the same spots in the range.

what I found most interesting was the difference in feel at impact between the Ventus and Motore X.  They felt the same in the swing but the Motore felt sort of hollow at impact while the Ventus felt meaty. I know it wasn’t the head because I switched them around but I think it may have been the midsize grip on the Motore.  It was strange, but noticeable. I feel like I was loading the Motore X a little easier, but they’re really close.

Before the stuff hit the fan at the house with my electrical (see "Home Improvement" thread), I was able to hit up the driving range.

Today was a bit different, after starting out warming up with some wedges, I moved on to playing the course by hitting to different targets on the range. Ball contact was meh to start out with the exception of driver. I really concentrated on trying to hit a certain shot off the tee. An example is the fifth hole that it's advantageous to hit a fade. Screenshot_20210619-211016_Earth-01.jpeg.73eeec078ba267547f6112423755c309.jpeg

I walked up, focusing on a dimple on the ball, and hit a solid shot. On the sixth, I imagined a tree on the right side fairway, aimed, and hit another good shot.

My fairways were hit or miss, but I was encouraged by a few that just felt so good coming off the face. Irons and wedges were better than normal, until the end of the session. I was trying to stay out of my own head the entire time and made a slight adjustment on the follow through for my last five shots. I then hit five crisp 6 irons to leave the range of a good note.

nice! it definitely helps to have a game plan at the range. sounds like you can leave today’s session with some good takeaways. hopefully that confidence comes with you to the course for your next round

usually i work up from partial wedges to full wedges to flighted irons to full irons.

then when i get to the driver i try simulating holes by going driver-iron-wedge.  every 2-3 “holes” i’ll switch out the iron and wedge combo to keep myself hitting different clubs. it definitely beats standing there and banging away.

What really amazed me was the level of nerves/adrenaline this method brought out. I got in the car and could feel my heart racing and it was so much fun.
