What/How Did You Practice Today?

I got out for a 9 holes practice session yesterday and the hat work hasn’t disappointed me. Really working on the driver swing, not breaking my wrists early and staying with the slow tempo. Solid contact on every drive and the trajectory plus distance was killer. The wind killed some of my drives a bit but it was fantastic to see the progress. Need to go back to putting practice. Pace was bad and I missed a few 3-4 footers that will cost me

I really should try practicing.

I just play.

None of the geezers with whom I play practice either.

Oh, I'll make an appearance on the practice tee once in a great while,

but nobody bothers to alert the media.

I do putt the practice green once in a while, but I'm not sure if I'd call that practicing.

It's mostly killing time.

Just a perfect day here in Indiana today.  I went to a course with a great practice area and just hit a lot of chips and pitches from 25 yards to 60 yards.  Switching back and forth between my 54* and 58* to find out what feels more comfortable and yields the most consistent results.

I found that I have better luck on pitches 40 yards and in with my lob wedge and control other shots to around 65 yards with my 54*.  At 70 yards begins my 3/4 lob wedge which is usually good for me.  Will experiment more to find out if there is merit to this.

Keep it up! The NTC stuff is gold. I haven't made it that far, yet. I'm still working on getting to A and working a lot on that. The flat left wrist is starting to come along nicely, but with things being crazy here it's been hard to do nothing other than grabbing a club and working on positioning. Like you, I hope by early next year to have it down.

The flat lead wrist is huge!  Mine was slightly cupped before Monte changed it.  He says that it doesn't matter if it's off a little bit, but it's important that in transition, the wrist is bowing a little.  I have some of my best strikes on the ball when I feel my wrist bowing at the start of the downswing.  This was hard for me, but it's well worth it to get the wrists correct.

Did another range session 3rd time this week to get used to the T300, worked on keeping the head still, I was having problems with my swing the other day and this really helped the issue, was playing a nice fade on the range. Was picking random targets some really hard angles, went pretty well, overall happy

Had to hit off mats yesterday, so my main focus was alignment. I really need to hit more greens, and my misses are right or left, not so much distance related. I need to do this every time from now on, it really helped.

Good range session at lunch today, took my time and just relaxed about not stressing over needing to run back to the office. Driver started out fadey but definitely straightened out. Even the fades would have been playable if I hit those during a round. Again - I need to just do my best to take that to the course. Still working on feeling like my hands are as far away from my head as possible and I'm only taking a half swing (which is pretty much a full swing, anything more than that and I'm John Daly).

Ground was soooooooo wet due to all the rain we've had this week, my iron heads are a mess now LOL. I could have hit off the mats but I just can't stand that. Irons and wedges were solid, with a few "WTF just happened there?" shots. But that's why it's practice to get those out of the way 🙂

Had a productive lesson the other day, and hoping it'll help me to reverse the regress of my past few rounds and turn it into some more forward progress!

Worked on all the usual things, including... setup, posture, takeaway, position at the top, weight transfer, path, etc etc, ... but especially to be conscious of straightening out the right arm (technically both arms, of course) coming into impact .. I have a tendency to keep my trail (right) elbow tucked in by my side at impact.

Started getting a lot more solid contact on a lot more shots, with fewer stinkers than usual, and ended up with a pretty nice grouping of virtual balls downrange (indoor lesson on a sim).

Now to work on replicating all that goodness IRL 😉

Had the day off and my Mavrik Max arrived today, so after picking up my daughter from school I had to hit some balls into the net in the yard. Set up the MLM to compare my old driver to the Mavrik and also hit some 8 irons to warm up. Once my phone cools down enough to turn back in I'll have to take a look at the numbers to see if the Mavrik is getting a spot in the bag. Side note: Callaway could stand to use some higher quality construction on their practice nets. Punched a hole in the target fabric with an 8 iron and one of the cords that holds at a corner snapped.

I've been working on my full swing so much lately with the PlaneMate and NTC drill that I have severely neglected my short game practice.  It's been 💩 last couple of rounds.  So today I went to the course to specifically pitch, chip and putt.

Got there and Holy Crap!!  At 10am the range was full, the putting green was full, and half a dozen people pitching into the pitching green.  Don't people work anymore?  I had to wait 15 minutes to get a spot on the putting green.  I worked on controlling the putter face using one-handed putts (trail hand) ala Tiger.  Last weekend I wasn't very good at starting my putts on my intended line.  After 10 minutes I seemed to have that issue fixed.  Then I focused on 20 footers, and had good speed control with putts finishing a foot past the hole.

After several groups were called to the 1st tee, it started thinning out a little.  I could comfortably chip onto the putting green without getting in someone's way.  I had the best results chipping with my 60º, flying the ball about halfway to the hole.  I'll stick with that tomorrow.

Still quite a few people on the pitching green; someone giving lessons and boy... do some of them need it!!  The range opened up, so I took a small bucket to see if my full swings off my mat at home transfers to grass.  I struggled a little to start but finally began hitting some decent 9i and 7i shots.  Finished with some great driver shots.  Hope I remember how to do that tomorrow.

I was about to leave when the pitching green cleared, so grabbed some balls and hit a few shots.  I seemed to hit better pitches today with my 54º than I did with my 60º.  Not sure why; don't know if I should trust it, or stick with my usual 60º shots tomorrow.  I think I will spend a few minutes there before I tee off, then make a decision.

My company gave us a "floating holiday" today so we get a 4 day weekend out of the deal. Even if they hadn't, I probably would have just used a vacation day anyway. That is far too many people for me.

Practiced green side chips … just shoulders, back 2-3 inches, then thru. Next opened face & repeated. We have a few downhill, next to green shots where you can’t go long. Saves 2 strokes if I can flop onto the apron.

Well, I played today and apparently I need more practice.  😬

Won't get to do that for a week; play tomorrow; tournament on Monday, then headed to Seattle for my wife's sister-in-law's funeral.  Not even taking my sticks.

Still nursing the finger but all stitches are out and the Dr. told me that the laceration  was healing well and loosely told me I could start swinging again (my interpretation I'm sure).  So I went to the range and started swinging in earnest the other day.  I wasn't planning on going too hard, just wanted to see if the finger would hold up.  I started with some very easy short irons focusing on protecting my finger, getting a proper hip turn, and not letting my trail arm collapse.  All of which was surprisingly successful.  My three week layoff seems to have ironed a few things out and started to set a few things I was working on.  The finger felt really good so I started increasing my swing tempo and moving up to the long irons and eventually my 3 wood and Driver.  All my contact felt really good though I'm still missing on the toe more than I want.

I've been in the garage a lot while healing playing with the swing weight of my driver and 3 wood and I have to say that getting them both to a heavier swing weight looks like its going to pay dividends.  Both felt much easier to hit solidly and I have both of them right around D6/7 (Using the hireko tool not a proper swing weight scale).  It didn't feel like I dropped any swing speed and it felt easier to load the shaft with a reasonably smooth transition vs. something a little more aggressive.  I wish I had known about swing weight before, because these adjustments seem to have made it a lot easier for me to hit both of these clubs.  I hit both very solidly today.  Still need to work on my accuracy but it no longer feels like I'm fighting for proper contact every swing.

I moved on from the range feeling pretty good about myself I moved over to do some quick wedge and sand practice.  For the wedge I decided to try and focus on short chips that I end up with a lot --  approach miss  just to the right or left of the green in the rough.  I was very happy with the results.  19/20 on the green with a fair bit in pretty solid one putt range(First pic).  Moved onto a version with a tight lie with the ball below my feet (Much less successful and no picture).  Finally I worked on shots out of the bunker from a variety of lies -- plugged, in a footprint, on wet sand.  That too was pretty successful today 15/20.  Side note, I've been trying that heavily closed club, loose grip shot for plugged lies.  I don't really get how it works but man does it work.  (Second Pic)

All in all a pretty good range day.  Hopefully all this range work will be worth something when I get back out there.  Going to give the finger another harder swinging range day this coming week and if it holds up actually try to play around with it.  It won't be fully healed for a while but at least it will be serviceable.

Thanks to my lovely daughter, I was up at 6:30 this morning so I decided to pull out the net and try to work out the distance gapping throughout the bag. It did not go well. I'm pretty much decided to throw in the towel on the Rapsodo. I'm sure it's a good little device, but for my applications, I simply can't rely on the data it is giving me. On the positive, I'm about 95% sold on the Mavrik Max replacing the old Cleveland.

I was able to get out for a small bucket and some time on the putting green this afternoon. Wedges and irons were good, trying to add a short low pitch with my 58* to my arsenal. Worked on that a bunch. Driver was terrible. 3w was way better. Starting to get frustrated again 😕

It looks like you're making good progress Derrick, I paused the face on video at impact and it's good to see some shaft lean going on there. Keep grinding!

I struggle to get that good shaft lean at impact. I know shaft lean is a result of good sequencing, so I know something is off when I start to get a little flippy.

Went to the range with my son to work on my driver and woods.  My driver is slicing pretty hard right and I'm just not hitting woods well in general.

I get zero distance on my longer clubs.  I'd like to blame my older hand-me-down equipment but I'm sure it's mostly just me being terrible, lol.  I'm finding that I get better woods contact when I play the ball nearer to my back foot, which seems counterintuitive, but I digress.

Was messing around with different tee heights, grip, and setup for the driver. I was able to straighten it out at the expense of popping it way up instead.  So, not great.

Son finished before me so he was watching me finish my bucket.  He noticed that I keep my arms more or less locked which results in an outside-in swing.  I tried flexing a bit more aggressively at the top of my back swing which seemed to straighten me out without sacrificing my meager distance.  Ran out of balls and had somewhere to be, so I'm not sure yet if breakthrough or dumb luck.  Hopefully I can get back in the next day or so.

What is you definition if good shaft lean?  Does it vary based on the type of shot you are trying to hit?  Why do you think yours is bad?

So almost kinda funny... Most of you reading and posting in here can relate to over-correcting a problem and causing a new one..!

And most of you know that I've mentioned I've been taking a series of lessons, in which we've been working on .. amongst many! other things .. getting a better weight shift forward during the downswing plus not hanging back with my upper body at impact (eg. hips bump forward but shoulders are leaning back behind the ball).

Well now I seem to be moving my upper body actually too far forward which is one (amongst many!) causes of hitting the ball thin and low... So the instructor gave me a new drill to work on; went to the range after the lesson and tried to focus on what he calls "shoulder bend" but .. at least as I understand it at this point .. is a fancy term for getting yourself into a nicer, more upright and balanced finishing position.

Think I got a few balls out there with getting an approximation of the move....

Well, today was a first for me - I had to yell FORE while on the driving range 😲

Swung by the muni to work on driver after it failed me last week on the course, there was a Monday tourney getting ready to tee off at 9 so most of the range was in use. No problem, I just went down to the left hand side, which abuts the 3rd hole.

Note: There is NO netting on either side of this range. The newer management company took down the old nasty shredded one last season and has not replaced it, possibly due to the range needing to be relocated due to some upcoming construction.

So I go hit some wedges, all good. Hit my irons, all good. Pull the driver, intent on just working on a consistent fade which is my natural shot. When I try and force a draw, bad things happen. I hit some great shots, some not so great, then I got into a nice rhythm.

Then I hit a pull to end all pulls. You know the one. That shot where you catch it so flush and it takes off like a rocket... just to the left.

Right out of the range onto the 3rd fairway.

Right at two carts who had come over the hill and stopped by the range.

SO YEAH... I yelled FORE! and had all the tourney players looking weirdly at me. Didn't care. Thankfully the ball landed well to the left of them, because I am not sure they heard me, or if they did, if they were even paying attention.

I went back to wedges for the rest of the bucket.

Ugh...that was me on one my tee shots last night...during league playoffs no less...on a good note it was crushed pretty dang far beautifully into the woods! 🤔😁😂🤣

What is you definition if good shaft lean?  Does it vary based on the type of shot you are trying to hit?  Why do you think yours is bad?

Not saying its bad, just something my instructor has me working on

Just getting back from some range time to try to fix my swing. Did I fix my swing? Not really but I had a nice lychee 🍸or three afterwards to make me feel better. That's all for tonight folks...
