JerryB
On 9/9/2021 at 10:34 AM, JerryB said: Went to the range with my son to work on my driver and woods. My driver is slicing pretty hard right and I'm just not hitting woods well in general. I get zero distance on my longer clubs. I'd like to blame my older hand-me-down equipment but I'm sure it's mostly just me being terrible, lol. I'm finding that I get better woods contact when I play the ball nearer to my back foot, which seems counterintuitive, but I digress. Was messing around with different tee heights, grip, and setup for the driver. I was able to straighten it out at the expense of popping it way up instead. So, not great. Son finished before me so he was watching me finish my bucket. He noticed that I keep my arms more or less locked which results in an outside-in swing. I tried flexing a bit more aggressively at the top of my back swing which seemed to straighten me out without sacrificing my meager distance. Ran out of balls and had somewhere to be, so I'm not sure yet if breakthrough or dumb luck. Hopefully I can get back in the next day or so. We went back out today and were joined by a friend from work. Same thing; hit a bucket almost exclusively with my driver. Rotating my lead hand more towards the top of the shaft (so the back of my hand is pointing much more upward) really straightened me out. My friend pointed out that I have nearly no lower body movement at all and he showed me how to rotate my hips and shift my weight more. Some better movement combined with the grip change gave me a bunch of drives that were straighter and far longer than any I've had before. Huge, HUGE confidence boost! I have a 3 wood and a 3 hybrid; I hit a few balls with each. I still have issues with the three wood but I managed to really pop a few with the hybrid. Seems if I play it back a bit and keep my hands ahead of the club head I can get pretty good results. Again, not sure if good, bad, or just luck. cksurfdude 1 Quote Cobra Aerojet Max driver Cobra Aerojet Max 3 wood and 7 wood Cobra Aerojet 4/5/6 hybrids Cobra Aerojet 7-PW, GW Cobra Snakebite 52° and 58° wedges Cobra King Stingray 20 putter
revkev
Spent 2 hours on the range today - I’m anxious to get my feedback from my last video that I sent in. I know there’s more to be done to get the right elbow in order. Still I hit lots of good wedge and 9 iron shots. Drove it fine also. From there I went to 2 problem spots of late - 9 wood and penultimate wedge - mixed results with 9 wood - clearly better with full shots with the SCOR 56 than the Edison 54 - so the SCOR is back in - I’ve still got the Edison 59 in. JerryB
Hit the range today with a large bucket, intent on finally getting a former grasp on my club yardages. Wedges weren't great today so I'm going to have to try with them again. But as I moved up in clubs I seemed to get a better handle on things. The adjustments to my driver, wood, and hybrid seems to be paying off. My son suggested a setup change during a round yesterday and I tried it again today. Wood and hybrid were much more consistent this time and all three clubs were both longer than before and much tighter in dispersion. russtopherb, cksurfdude and sirchunksalot 3 Quote Cobra Aerojet Max driver Cobra Aerojet Max 3 wood and 7 wood Cobra Aerojet 4/5/6 hybrids Cobra Aerojet 7-PW, GW Cobra Snakebite 52° and 58° wedges Cobra King Stingray 20 putter

RickyBobby_PR
10 hours ago, rbsiedsc said: Range session to see how my swing work translates to hitting balls. Still slightly across the line and in my transition my lower body needs to be more involved. Face contact decent. Somethings I notice. At address you have open shoulders while your hips seem to be square to target but then your feet are staggered. (First pic) The right arm starts to get under the left arm early and the right hand underneath as well. Also a pretty flat turn of the shoulders (second pic) Then we see the club starting to get behind the hands and there’s very little to no wrist set at this point (third pic) In between third and fourth pics the butt of the club is pointed outside of the ball when it should be on the imaginary ball line or slightly inside it. This leads to a flat swing and the shoulders/arms get too much rotation (fourth pic) In transition you don’t have much choice but to have the left shoulder and arm rotate internally because it can’t rotate externally any more to flatten the shaft. So you get what some call the arm wrestling move and this steepens the shaft. (Fifth pic) From here the hips start to spin out and because of the steep shaft you have to early extend to get back to the ball and at impact you can see the clubhead is going to strike heel side of center and have some added spin. (Last 2 pics) Theres some improvement in I don’t see the same amount of arm lift as before especially early in the swing and then to the top. The majority of work needs to be done from address, possibly grip and up thru the fourth pic. Once those get better issues from that point to the top of the swing will improve. MDGolfHacker
There are days where you take off for a practice session during lunch and days where you feel like you should of worked through lunch instead of practicing....and today was one of those days. I wasn't happy with how I hit the ball during the first round of the league playoffs (almost gave it away with a poor iron shot on the very last hole - had to go to two tie breaker holes but I managed to squeak by to make it into the next round of playoffs). So I went to a course closest to me that had both a decent range and a decent putting area. Well the putting area was closed . So I got a large bucket to work on the full swing and I pretty much hit every nightmare shot out there. Shanks, slices, pushes, push hooks, pull hooks, Roy Mcavoy range dipsy doodle (being a lefty and in the MIDDLE of the range didn't help with these shots either), fat, thin you name it I hit it, except for any decent good shots. Today's range session had me questioning my sanity with this game and every aspect of my swing. I really hate days like today /rant off. Syks7
After last weeks 93 in my first tournament (with 5 pars, a birdie, and 33 putts -- SMH!!!) I made a mess of the other 11 holes, mostly because I was often short on approach landing inside my nemesis of short range chipping. Being short didn't help but most of those extra strokes were flubbed chips. So today I decided to work on two things, really knowing the carry range of my clubs from flushed to mishit and a boatload of short range chipping. I went through a large bucket, taking my time with each club, and really keeping an eye on the range of numbers I was seeing from my launch monitor. It was a middling day, I struggled with tempo, accuracy, and my swing felt sloppy. But, rather than go down that rabbit hole I decided to keep my focus on ranges. In the end my tempo, swing, and accuracy all kind of ironed out on their own -- Kind of a good unintentional lesson in avoiding 'swing thoughts' and focusing on the task at hand. All an all a pretty successful day. I have a pretty solid range for each club now that I've written down in a little notebook I'm keeping with my bag for when I play. At the chipping green I spent a lot of time chipping out of an area 5-10 ft. off the fringe. Right now, when I play, these shots make me so nervous. I just don't feel confident making them. But, come hell or high water I'm going to bring this segment of my game into line with the rest of it. I probably hit 140-160? chips today? I'd just a hit a sleeve of 20, reload it, and rinse and repeat. The first couple sleeves was pretty ugly -- lots of chunked, flubbed, skulled shots, and more than a little swearing both loudly and under my breath. I stopped going after the pin and just aimed to get on. Things got a lot better. I was landing almost all of the shots on the green with the majority short and a few up against the fringe behind the pin. Once I got a rythm going I started to try and attack the pin again and build feel for what I need to do swing wise for different types of lies. This is the part that I think is going to finally get me feeling comfortable with these types of shot, but for now it remains a work in progress. Popular Post GolfSpy AFG
Spent a lot of time on the range this morning, with the Tour Striker Smart Ball, working on wedges. My wedge play has been absolutely atrocious lately, and it's unfortunate because I've been driving and putting well. How atrocious? Wedge shanks atrocious. Went and saw my GolfTec instructor last week and worked on diagnosing the issues. I've always had a bit of a tendency to dip into impact rather than stay tall and fully extend my arms, and I've got to work harder to address that issue. GolfTec metrics put a tour pro's average knee flex at impact at 30 degrees. The first pic, at address, shows 15 degrees of trail knee flex. At impact I was collapsing over 30 degrees, down to 47 degrees! Dipping that much, the club was getting stuck behind me and I wasn't able to fully extend my arms if I was going to make good contact. In the second pic, the image on the last is the aforementioned "bad" 47 degrees, the image on the right being a mildly good 5 degree improvement. Per GolfTec, I've got 12 more degrees to go to reach that tour pro metric of 30, but you can see with just 5 degrees less flex how much more room I've got to extend my arms. "Less knee flex" doesn't really register with me, but focusing on staying tall and full extending my arms this morning on the range definitely had me hitting much better wedge shots. That, and the Smart Ball to help me keep the club in front of me. sirchunksalot, bens197, JerryB and 8 others 10 1 Quote Driver: TSR2, Ventus Blue 6 S, 65g Stiff FW: TSR2 3w, 15, Ventus Blue 7 S, 70g Stiff Hybrids: Apex Pro 3H, Ventus Blue 8 S, 80g Stiff Stealth DHY 4H, Ventus Blue 8 S, 80g Stiff Irons: SMS 5-6, SMS Pro 7-PW, Aerotech Steelfiber i95 Stiff Wedges: SM9 48 F Grind, 52 F Grind, 56 M Grind, Aerotech Steelfiber i95 Stiff Putter: Sri-Hot 5K Triple Wide, Stroke Lab shaft Ball: Pro V1 Click here for my HONMA TR20 Official Review! Haro
Not sure where to post this Had an excellent day with my approach shot to the green Was getting out of my own way I have stopped using the driving iron , I think it was causing the habit of "hitting up" infecting my mid and short irons. Focus on hitting down on the, making a small divot , and felt I was flushing pure without effort , ball was online , very little curve . Funny thing was I was focus on the hosel part of the club , but I knew I wasnt going to shanke cause I was turning my shoulders in unison. Type of grip was as not as important as where the ball position was . felt middle of the stance was a good starting part for ten finger grip . just foreward of center and slightly away from body for intermesh grp. generally playing the ball back of center for knockdown, but I find that i shuffle my feet and place it more forward in the stance, can play more of "stinger" type shot I was still having trouble guaging my 75-100 yard shots. I flew over the green with one pitch approach with 1/2 swing I had only one other approach at the that distance that I had to intention "hit thin" to take distance off and that worked. cksurfdude, MDGolfHacker and JerryB
Haro
Topping almost every fairway wood I think it’s cause I’m hitting like a driver on tee i practice on the side hill lies and notice that if I tap the sole of the head against the ground as preshot routine. can hit the fairway wood more flush without fear of fatting or topping Somehow it helps me shallow the swing after awhile I felt confident to try to hit a driver of the deck. It went only as far as my 3 wood but I get the concept that I can hit a driver like a 3 wood but can’t hit a 3 wood like a driver unless I purchase a 3 wood with a deeper face and tee it up Edited September 16, 2021 by Haro cksurfdude, JerryB and MDGolfHacker
cksurfdude
I read an article on Golf dotcom titled "Why practicing without a golf ball can seriously help your game" that starts out with ... "The secret is in the dirt, Ben Hogan once famously said. The only problem is that millions of golfers have spent countless hours digging but haven’t turned up any treasure." It goes on to talk about "positive effects of visualization in sports" .. no, not news to most on here ... and continues with a golf-specific example, and some tips on how you could use and benefit from practicing without a ball. I found it interesting as this season I've been to the range way fewer times vs previous years, in part due to the old aches and pains in the back and joints plus kinda saving my energy for real golf rounds .. but more so as I've actually been doing more "dry swing" practice this year, including rehearsing the new movements from my series of lessons. Since I've .. generally .. been striking the ball better lately maybe it's helping?!!? I told the guys about it, and none of them believe me. One went so far as to explore the USGA rule book to confirm that it's allowed. He couldn't find confirmation there. Syks7
Once again took advantage of being my own boss today. I had a gap in between meetings near a little par 3 course with a great putting green so I threw the sleeve and putter in the car and figured I'd be able to get in 30-40 minutes of putting. I had a really good day with putting practice from 6' in even with the heavy sloping that this green has I was perfect from 3' for the day and my putting stroke felt good. First I did the two tee gate drill from 3,6,9,and 12 '. On an uphill slope for 3ft,9ft and downhill slope for 6 ft, 12 ft . 3'-- 20/20 6'-- 18/20 9' -- 12/20 12' -- 4/20 Next I did some long range lag putting practice w/ a side slope and uphill/downhill aiming to leave the ball inside 3'. 50 ft. uphill. 13/20 inside 3' 18/20 inside 6', 1 make (counted as inside 3') 50' downhill 12/20 inside 3' 16/20 inside 6' 2 makes (counted as inside 3') Last I ran through the putting drill I've been using where I use the sleeve of 20 and start from 3'. I take all the makes and move 3' further out. Rinse and repeat. I did this on a side slope today and made enough putts to make it to 12'. 20/20 3' 15/20 6' 3/15 9' 0/3 12' It was a good day of putting and I had a couple takeways. First my make percentage plummets beyond 6' though I am leaving the 9 & 12 footers at tap in range. (I wouldn't expect it to be particularly good anyway especially in real world conditions where I don't get to hit 20 in a row from the same spot). Second the make percentages in these drills are more indicative that I'm building a repeatable and reliable putting stroke then being lights out at 6'. Third follow through is everything for my putting stroke, even at short range. If I don't finish the stroke I will push and pull the ball like crazy. Haro
Watched a few videos on plumb bob putting went to practise the technique. Didn’t seem to work for me. I got more confidence croutching down on the low side and walking along the line to get the sense of slope. Just another technique that confuses me and makes me lack confidence when I try to setup a routine for putting sirchunksalot, chisag, cksurfdude and 1 other
Haro
Tried two putting practice drills this week 1. Took two knitting needles with a fine thread connect them and stuck in the ground and putt ball under the line with my eye over the line 2 Buy a yardstick and ball on top on the yard stick and putt ball trying to keep ball rolling on the yardstick Surprising I like the 2nd drill with the yardstick keep me focus on in good roll on the ball. Plus it may be more aware how much i was turning the blade and not keep the putter square for a 3 foot putt The knitting sticks with line I think was bit too unnatural Tried a few times and I don’t see the line like that when I’m putting good. I prefer a wider path like toilet paper roll as I like to adjust speed with line RollingGreens, Syks7, sirchunksalot and 1 other
Haro
In the range I usually think about ball position at the end of the season Also had various ball position and tried to make one ball position work but never does In general I play my iron much better with ball middle or forward of middle and taking a divot in front of the ball with slightly downward hit Today working on my fairway wood my swing speed is not high enough to carry a 3w so I been using 19 degree The best ball position is for that club is related to my left shoulder girdle and and move my feet so it’s more closed and tend to get a draw I have to trust the loft and hit slightly down If I level off I tend to hit a pull hook For the driver since I tee it so high I have to tilt my upper body and put more weight on my right side I relate the ball to my right hip in a 3-D perspectives and stand open and hit up My diver been good to me this year Either a straight or straight fade that is manageable Another thought comes to mind is playing the irons well with either a square stance or open stance When I had to hook the ball played ball position more like my FW and ball opposite my left shoulder and my feet automatically closed without me thinking. Siamese Moose
This is not about how I practiced (though I'm working on hip turn), rather it's about this fearless/stupid guy. It's misty, so I was in the stalls. As I was about to start my takeaway with a driver, this maintanence guy walked right in front of me, about 15 yards out, and went to the closest aiming pole (52 yds) to start working. I never saw him coming, and he never looked at me after I noticed him. A driver at that distance could be fatal! He then spent 10 minutes digging around the pole. It was so close to my target line that I just couldn't hit shots. I sat down and waited for him to finish. If it had been any longer I would have moved, and also made a complaint. cksurfdude
There was a topic on another golf forum about 'my new favorite practice drill' and the poster was really quite ecstatic about how its helping him with his game - turns out it's the Harvey Penick "Slow Motion Drill" ... so for any of you who have "The Little Red Book" please go read (or re-read) this section. I'm going to be doing this drill / exercise regularly from now on!! Interestingly in another section of the book called, "The Mythical Perfect Swing", he mentions doing this drill with a weighted club (I happen to have, amongst the training aid collection, an old Medicus weighted iron). sirchunksalot, GolfSpy_SHARK, Nolan220 and 1 other 4 Quote WITB of an "aspiring" play-ah ... Popular Post edingc
Weather is already starting to turn for the worse. Chilly (mid 50s) and windy at the range today in the first really not nice weather we've had since the spring. As is usual, I feel like I've really hit my stride right near the end of the season. Today I focused on getting through the ball and off my backside. When I get stuck on my backside I'm likely to hit blocks and hooks, and my low point control sucks. Tough to describe, but maintaining the feeling of really staying centered in my turn and then allowing my right shoulder to go through the ball on the downswing was working well. Hit some really nice wedges, especially, which have been my Achilles' heel lately. mikeanthony
I’m confident (or so I think ) my 2 year quest to find irons that fit my current game is done … got the G425s in the mail yesterday, and immediately visited the range with the 8i and PW. Happy with the range session and don’t want to get my hopes up, but they’re great thus far. Photo below is from 8i and I’m liking its ball flight and distance. Still working with the swing thought of “back like Finau, thru like Fleetwood” … my short term project with the Maltby TS1s, while lovely and feel amazing when well struck, I just don’t play enough to game them consistently … and they weren’t gelling with the above swing thought. Next step is to find a GW that blends well with the set. cksurfdude, Syks7, cnosil and 5 others 8 Quote Driver: G410 SFT 10.5* 3W: Speedzone 14.5* Hybrid: TS2 19* & 21* Irons: Forged Tec One Length (5i-GW) Wedges: T22 55* & 59* Putter: 002 Mid-Mallet Ball: Callaway Chrome Soft LS & Prime-X
